I watched tis on BBC catch up last night - it was lovely! Sad, but lovely.

Anyone else seen it?

I recommend reading the book it's much 'deeper' although I still liked the film.

purpleme12 · 02/01/2021 21:00

I saw this ages ago
Loved it

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2021 21:22

Last time we saw MIL in October briefly, we drove past Widemouth as we were coming from south cornwall. The waves were really wild.

The berk bobbing about in the waves and galloping in on a bodyboard was probably me!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2021 21:23

PS We like Sandymouth too!

Taytocrisps · 03/01/2021 07:54

I watched it last night and loved it, although the book was better.

orangejuicer · 03/01/2021 07:58

I watched this last week and really enjoyed it. I haven't read the book so I wasn't sure what to expect. The details of the occupation were a bit much for me.

QuietFlame · 03/01/2021 08:07

I am fascinated by the Occupation of the Channel Islands and have read and watched everything I can about it.
I visited Guernsey in October 2019 and lived it.
We stayed in a hotel that had been the headquarters of the German Navy during the war , there was a small underground museum next door with the most engaging and fascinating guide!
I will definitely go back whenever possible.
For anyone wanting to read about the subject I recommend
‘A Model Occupation’ by Madeleine Bunting (she also wrote a novel a year or so ago)
‘The Day the Germans Came’(can’t remember the author)
And just before my visit I watched ‘Enemy at The Door’ from beginning to end on YouTube (I vaguely remember watching as a child in the 70s, it was a shame the series ended before the horror of the late Occupation years could be shown).

QuietFlame · 03/01/2021 08:08

Meant to type’loved it ‘ not ‘lived’ obviously Blush

Elderflower14 · 03/01/2021 08:28

We loved the film but noticed half of the Downton Abbey were in it!

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/01/2021 08:36

I haven't been to Guernsey but I've been to Jersey and visited the War museum in the caves. You are given identity cards when you go in and have to find out whether you survived or not. There must still be lingering enmity between familes who collaborated to save their skins and those who didn't. My character (a real person) was shot for resistance.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/01/2021 15:45

I've had several holidays on Alderney and as a very small island it was enormously affected by the occupation. There was even a sort of concentration camp on the island and a memorial to all those who died. And the number of fortifications is incredible - concrete edifices everywhere. Many of them are bijou holiday homes now.

I found there was a real atmosphere in several places on the island.

QuietFlame · 03/01/2021 17:44

That’s interesting, I felt exactly the same on Guernsey, was quite unnerved at times.
I would like to visit Alderney too.

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2021 18:21

I have only been to Guernsey to get the ferry to Sark. Like QuietFlame I am fascinated by the occupation during the war. We did a couple of garden tours on Sark and were told some stories of what it was like during the war for them.

Sark is a brilliant place to visit. We have been three times.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/01/2021 18:31

The underground hospital in Guernsey is utterly weird, spooky and fascinating.

DH has never been to the Channel Islands and it's high on our list to visit when we can.

swampytiggaa · 03/01/2021 18:39

I live in Bideford. Part of it was filmed in our town. I didn’t realise and got quite a shock when I saw German soldiers roaming around!

The slave labourers had their shoes bound up with hessian twine I sold to the costume person 😀 I’ll give autographs if you like 😂😂

JoanWilderbeast · 03/01/2021 19:22

Finally got round to watching it on my recorded list and was a bit meh until about 30 or so mins in then I was hooked and really bought into it. Three very different but attractive men might have helped a wee bit, but I was glad I stuck with it regardless :).

bruffin · 03/01/2021 19:23

My MIL and her sister were evacuated to Bideford @swampytiggaa during the war

I think quite a few were! We moved here from the midlands 11 years ago now and bloody love it 😊
QuietFlame · 03/01/2021 20:38

Guernsey definitely had an ‘aura’ about it.As I posted earlier our hotel had been Kriegsmarine headquarters I believe ,I think that added to the sense of the past being very present. Also the numerous defences and batteries built all over the coastline.
We went to a military museum by the outdoor swimming pools,Lili Marlene was playing and it was full of Occupation memorabilia,it was fascinating.

AnneElliott · 03/01/2021 20:50

Saw it a while ago and loved it.

A similar film is 'Another Mother's Son' which is a true story and also really good.

AnneElliott · 03/01/2021 20:52

Agree that the museum in Jersey is amazing. We also visited a small 'pill box' museum which was run by a man who was a child during the Occupation. We had a good couple of hours talking to him.

QuietFlame · 03/01/2021 21:38

Oh yes I’ve seen ‘Any mother’s Son’ very moving .
And I agree it was a shame that they never did another series of Island At War .
I always think the Channel Islands Occupation is ‘overlooked’ somewhat, am sure many people are completely unaware that it ever happened.
