Anyone watching this. What a total load of shite! Cliched, cringy and just utter crap. It looked good from the trailer!

@CrunchyNutNC glad you said that I thought I was going deaf!

Leftrightatthelights · 25/11/2020 20:28

I’ve not worked in this exact industry but have in another a bit like it and I’d say the drugs and sex bits aren’t far off and I’ve seen worse. But I’ve never seen people talk to others in the office in this manner! Everyone is evil in it!

Womencanlift · 28/11/2020 12:25

All episodes are now on iPlayer and it is a good watch even though it feels about 20 years out of date

MissEliza · 28/11/2020 12:46

I watched episode 4 last night. I'm struggling to understand wtf Yasmin is doing to Robert. At first I thought she was enjoying the flirtation but I thought she was pretty nasty to him at the end of the episode. He does seem thick skinned though.

beentherenc · 29/11/2020 12:04

I've watched all of them now and struggling to see what the point of it all was? what's the message? toxic masculinity always wins in the end and women have to join them to succeed. Very 90s and out of kilter with modern organisations. Oh and setting Yasmin up to be the office dominatrix in the next series?

topcat2014 · 29/11/2020 12:31

I like it. I am a finance director so not quite my world but I like the odd financey phrase..

Plus watch it on iplayer with subtitles as DW not interested.

damselindedress · 29/11/2020 15:00

@MissEliza i think she's enjoying the power dynamic where she is in control. She isn't treated with much redirect in the office or by her boyfriend so this is hey chance to have the upper hand and she clearly gets off on it.

I have never worked in banking but worked in London in a sales role throughout my twenties and early thirties and the office culture was quite familiar to me including the partying. I found some of the inappropriate language and behaviour sadly realistic. I've thankfully moved into something else now.

HateIsNotGood · 29/11/2020 17:09

It was ok - reasonably watchable with some 'plot' to it - an interesting thing was how my symapathies shifted towards the end - although I liked the Yasmin character throughout and that didn't change.

It is worth watching all the episodes if you kept with it for 3.

topcat2014 · 29/11/2020 17:23

Just watched ep 4. I am old now, and can't even claim to have been hip when young. I wanted a life like This Life.

Feel strangely grubby watching this. Plus also why are they all wearing such cheap nasty off white shirts?

Compelling though.

The Robert character is interesting.
Harper is growing on me.
The others are blurring together.

SimplyRadishing · 29/11/2020 18:13

Harper is a vapid arsehole.
Yasmin needs therapy.

Mildly repellent is the best of an awful bunch.

The 6am / 8pm gym scenes are accurate enough but the All nighters and dysfunctional sexting bollocks??? None of my city pals would risk their jobs for that...

SimplyRadishing · 29/11/2020 18:21

Argghhh vapid is not even the word
She is just awful and horrible.

She uses everyone, has no loyalty then makes pathetic excuses for her own shitty behaviour and fucks everyone over without a second thought.
It just reminds me of every dick head self absorbed millennial I have managed (although she has significantly more tenacity than most of the ones I managed)

Womencanlift · 29/11/2020 20:29

I was disappointed on how Harper’s character ended up. It would have been good to see her, Yasmin and Daria being a powerful female trio and good role models for the new grads coming in (especially after the career fair episode).

As I said in previous posts this is so far away from what I recognise the current banking culture to be but we do have a good laugh about it in my team at work and wish we could get away with all that partying and still function at work

topcat2014 · 29/11/2020 20:40

Quite explicit for a main channel, don't you think?

It’s post watershed and BBC 2 so no not really

However I will say that if this was on 5 years ago it’s likely to have been on BBC 3

KimchiLaLa · 29/11/2020 23:42

My husband is a trader and has confirmed its absolute shite, even at the grad level. Most proper bankers are too tired to party the way they portray they do. Brokers may do so but because it is their job to entertain clients. The creators did a ridiculous interview in the FT claiming it was all real, which is complete BS.

Thought it was just me. Twitter LOVES her. She seems like a selfish, although lost, douche bag. Over reaching constantly and wanting to run before she can walk.

Don't worry. I got that. Agree with pp that Robert and Harper are the nicest characters.

Pancakeorcrepe · 30/11/2020 07:27

I watched and yes it is cringe but I still enjoyed it. There is a lot of bad acting and bad writing though 🙈 most of the characters are insufferable. Yasmin’s boyfriend - omg what a wanker. Gus only has one expression, the smirking, one lifted eyebrow one. Harper is really quite evil. Lots of weird dynamics going on.

funtimefrank · 30/11/2020 08:35

I'm a bit confused

I'm up to episode 7 and I don't get why harper cares about Yas and Robert so much. I know there was a 'thing' but I thought that was the drugs.

I've also yet to see a real point to it although I am enjoying it in a guilty pleasure kind of way.

It seems a very exhausting way to run your sex life. So much doing it in the loo

I’m guessing she did have feelings for Robert at that point... I’m finding this programme doesn’t really directly explain a lot of stuff and leaves you to figure out why the characters are saying certain things or behaving in certain ways. I was confused about Yasmin and her boss speaking to her about the instant message conversations at work as it was never explicitly stated what the issue was there (apparently her work relationship with Kenny but I thought it wasn’t clear at all) I did find it a bit hard to follow in certain places
MissEliza · 30/11/2020 19:28

What I'd like to know is did Robert get the job or not? It seemed like Daria was trying to hire new kinds of people but the majority of people were in favour of Robert because he fitted a certain image.

friendlyflicka · 30/11/2020 21:03

I really enjoyed it. I didn't think it was making any profound points about society or assume it was realistic. Just thought it was a compelling drama about lots of attractive young people taking drugs and having sex and earning money.

Didn't even think Yasmin being dominant sexually was necessarily a reaction to being submissive in the rest of her life. More that was just the kind of sex she enjoyed.

I liked the way it didn't explain everything and left me to infer. I much prefer that to dramas where everyone discusses what has happened to jam it into your head in case you might have missed it.

I found it really entertaining and hope there is a next series.

topcat2014 · 01/12/2020 17:33

Maslow's hierarchy of needs got mentioned. About 30 years since I studied it. One of the few things I remember

topcat2014 · 01/12/2020 22:47

Anyone care to explain why it ended like that for the hard of thinking! Thanks
