I have a rare day off with no kids coming up soon and I want to spend it on the sofa immersed in period dramas.

Which ones do you love?

North and South!

Ahhh, Mr Thornton...

haha, got so excited I posted twice it seems

Upstairs Downstairs. The original one, not the recent continuation.

Asterion · 22/10/2020 09:53

Brideshead, the original ITV series. Without a doubt.

I've just finished bingeing Downton Abbey. As a sci-fi, crime, supernatural TV watcher it was something I didn't think I'd watch but it was really good. I thoroughly recommend it.

I look forward to other folks recommendations as well :-)

House of Eliott

biggirlknickers · 22/10/2020 19:41

Thanks. I might check out Downton Abbey - I’ve never seen it.

I’ve just watched the 1995 Pride and Prejudice TV series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It’s excellent, can’t fault it!

Emelene · 22/10/2020 20:16

Downtown Abbey is fantastic. Definitely one to watch if you haven't seen it.

I also really like Victoria.

funtimefrank · 22/10/2020 20:43

First series of Downton is good.

Are we allowing films? Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root is just perfect.

biggirlknickers · 22/10/2020 22:01

Definitely allowing films. Also love Jane Austen!

Dowton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Victoria, The Crown. I love period dramas!

OlegBurov · 22/10/2020 22:27

North and South here too 😊

PhoebeSnow · 22/10/2020 23:11

The original Upstairs, Downstairs and I enjoyed the BBC ‘s continuation as well, far superior to Downton imho in storyline and performances.

Cranford is wonderful , fab cast and a lovely mix of sadness and happiness in every episode.

I loved Home Fires; excellent cast of mainly actresses , strong story lines and timely when shown. I was angry and disappointed when itv cancelled it. What a cliffhanger to leave the viewers with.

jenandbean · 22/10/2020 23:18

Definitely North and South and the Ciaran Hinds Persuasion . Rewatch them both regularly.

wildthingsinthenight · 22/10/2020 23:20

Lark Rise To Candleford was great.
Another vote for Downton too

PerkingFaintly · 22/10/2020 23:24

So pleased to see all this Gaskell love.Grin

Wives and Daughters is also a superb adaptation, in addition to the Gaskell and Austen already mentioned.

Bleak House, Lark Rise, also very good.

PerkingFaintly · 22/10/2020 23:26

Which period, though? I, Claudius is excellent, but that's more a hiding-behind-the-sofa job than snuggling up on it...

PerkingFaintly · 22/10/2020 23:27

There was a very good Doctor Thorne with Tom Hollander.

And who can blame you.Grin
Ritascornershop · 23/10/2020 04:32

Home Fires was great. I really liked George Gently ... the characters & colours and costumes (& green china!) were lovely.

caughtalightsneeze · 23/10/2020 04:42

Grand Hotel. It's Spanish with subtitles. Frankly, it's a bit silly (cartoon villain-ish hotel owner, staff member who comes to work there to solve the mystery of his missing sister, owner's daughter who he falls in love with) but if you just suspend reality and enjoy the costumes and the sets and the improbable situations, it's really entertaining.

FagashJackie · 23/10/2020 04:49

I'd say the Jennifer Ehrle p and p.
Also the more recent Vanity Fair with Olivia Cooke.

KiposWonderbeasts · 23/10/2020 05:00

North and South definitely.

Sally Hawkins version of Persuasion.

How about Sharpe, with Sean Bean?
