I have a rare day off with no kids coming up soon and I want to spend it on the sofa immersed in period dramas.

Which ones do you love?

Foyles War without a doubt. I only started watching it because I fancied Honeysuckle Weeks, but it is so, so good

mammmamia · 23/10/2020 14:01

Does anyone know where you can currently watch Upstairs Downstairs?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/10/2020 14:12

This thread has reminded me I keep meaning to find Lost in Austen.

I loved Downton Abbey when it was first shown, it has some lovely clothes and filming. Later on you might need to write a list of characters though. A lot of stories go on at once!

I agree with Cranford and P&P.

Miss Austen Regrets, with the wonderful Olivia Williams, is also excellent for those who need their fix of Jane.

midsomermurderess · 23/10/2020 15:12

Jewel in the Crown.

JKRismyPatronus · 23/10/2020 15:43

PhoebeSnow I loved Home Fires too. When it was cancelled the writer wrote follow on books so disappointed viewers could find out what happened to the characters.

CousinKrispy · 23/10/2020 16:20

Little Dorrit, the old one with Alec Guiness and Derek Jacobi.

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/10/2020 16:29

Cold Comfort Farm and Brass

LaurieFairyCake · 23/10/2020 16:38

Place marking

PhoebeSnow · 23/10/2020 18:12

mammmamia the Drama channel used to rerun the whole series in the mornings, but that was a couple of years ago. It could be on YouTube and you can buy the original and the BBC continuation on DVD.

PhoebeSnow · 23/10/2020 18:18

JKR thank goodness he wrote the follow up books. I have never been so angry and disappointed about a cancelled series before. Bloody ridiculous to leave viewers high and dry like that, and I would imagine impossible to continue now due to the cast and crew all moving on to other stuff.

doadeer · 23/10/2020 20:12

Miss Fisher Mysteries is wonderful

Gatekeeper · 23/10/2020 20:25

Oh I loved Brass...gloriously over the top and silly

Cold Comfort Farm

Gertrudetheadelie · 23/10/2020 20:29

Oi, hands off my Mr Thornton! Grin

Trouble is that as much as I love my DH, he's just not Richard Armitage!

Can I also recommend Rufus Sewell in the Power and the Passion about Charles II?

The Last Kingdom
Vikings
Call The Midwife

redfairy · 25/10/2020 07:54

War and Peace with Paul Dano.

XiCi · 25/10/2020 10:00

Was just coming on to say War and Peace. I love the BBC version with James Norton and Paul Dano.

Grand Hotel on Netflix is brilliant (Spanish with subtitles) and if you are missing Money Heist, Berlin is one of the main characters.

Love all of the Marples and Poirots

The Tudors, so good. Binged it all at the beginning of lockdown.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 25/10/2020 17:54

Grand Hotel has reminded me of The Grand Budapest Hotel - it's has two timelines, both set in the past. I love it - the brilliant Ralph Fiennes.

Not 100% it can be classed as a period piece though.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/10/2020 18:01

Gentleman Jack.
It’s a tour de force for Suranne Joness.
Also a very modern take on the costume/period drama with comments and glances to camera and no attempt to speak in a period fashion.
Fine attention to detail and Yorkshire landscapes were fascinating.
If you don’t mind a side order of lesbian action (and self-confidence is always attractive) I’d highly recommended it.

Housewife2010 · 25/10/2020 20:14

Definitely the original and incomparable Upstairs Downstairs. Followed by The House of Eliott. In third place is Flambards. I am obsessively in love with all three.
