Anyone want to talk about Roadkill who has seen all four episodes?

Anyone spot any other references to the title. I got three. One rather horrible.

How much do people think that anyone had a hand in Sharmian's death or the paper not running the story?

Thanks for setting this up!

Ooh - I only got two Roadkill refs (the deer and the journalist) although in general I think it refers to his ruthless ambitious politicians are happy to treat everyone in their paths as roadkill.

Egghead68 · 22/10/2020 12:36

How not his.

Did you like it in the end? I thought it was disappointing. Lots of potential threads set up that came to naught.

I think Charmaine and the story were killed by Anglo-American or whatever they were called. I don’t think HL was aware.

honigbutter · 22/10/2020 12:56

I was expecting it to continue after episode 4. It seemed to stop mid story.

klippya · 22/10/2020 13:12

Yes there were SO many threads it really needed to be longer! It was a bit over ambitious but I did enjoy it.

The prime minister wasn't really convincing and the bit with the driver and the waitress girlfriend who was getting revenge for her mum's death was so underdeveloped!

I was confused about the age of the daughters too, he talked about his time in Notting hill as if he was in his 20s but his daughter in prison looked around 20 herself.

Agreed. I sat there thinking, 'Is that it?' I even checked that iplayer wasn't being odd and not playing episode 5 by mistake. Then I looked it up, to check there really were only four episodes - I thought maybe they'd only released the first 4 episodes and more were to come!
percypetulant · 24/10/2020 17:26

I enjoyed it. When are the rest of the episodes going on? Wink

Egghead68 · 24/10/2020 20:44

I think there are only 4 and they are all on iPlayer.

I agree with the Times review today which said it started out like a thriller but didn’t become one - it was more a character piece for HL.

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2020 22:27

There was a mention of roadkill in episode one.

I felt either: there is going to be a second series or it was cut short by COVID.
There are too many hanging threads.
For example the wife's conversation with the lawyer indicated there could be a time she wasn't prepared to "stay quiet" and she didn't sign the documents about the shell company.
And almost every story is left like that.
Even the think tank in DC, will that guy there go quietly?

Italiangreyhound · 25/10/2020 01:00

Yes Molly I am sure they left it open.

klippya "Yes there were SO many threads it really needed to be longer! It was a bit over ambitious but I did enjoy it." I think it could have been a lot longer.

"... the bit with the driver and the waitress girlfriend who was getting revenge for her mum's death was so underdeveloped!" It felt really out of place to me.

"I was confused about the age of the daughters too, he talked about his time in Notting hill as if he was in his 20s but his daughter in prison looked around 20 herself."

Yes, it was confusing. It felt like she was the youngest daughter, meaning when he had the affair he would have had two kids already or at least one.

There is a fairly big age gap between the ages of the first and second and nearly no age hap all between the younger ones (in real life).

Ophelia Lovibond plays Susan and is about 34 in real life.

Millie Brady plays Lily and is about 27 in real life and meant to be able 21 (last year of uni).

Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Rose and is also about 27 in real life.

It just wasn't clear if he was already a dad when he had Rose, but he must have been.

Egghead68 "I think Charmaine and the story were killed by Anglo-American or whatever they were called. I don’t think HL was aware."

It was called British American.

I guess I thought her death was an accident. But if not HL didn't have anything to do with it.

I think he really does believe his position.

I presume the Washington scenes were actually in the UK cos it looked suspiciously like London but with a few signs for "liquor" stuck up and a few American flags Grin

HMSSophie · 25/10/2020 06:51

That I sat though four episodes of HL, probably the worst actor In the world, must be down to covid.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 25/10/2020 06:52

The absolute gall of Peter Laurence was chilling/thrilling I thought and reflected the way men and women in politics are treated differently. Could you imagine a female leader being promoted in those circumstances?

On another note the music has driven me mad - bad ear worm material argh.

SophocIestheFox · 25/10/2020 06:57

Have to say, I completely lost interest in by episode four. I didn’t know what the stakes were- why was I supposed to care about any of it? The characters were so one dimensional, and I got fed up of how many times that, rather than having a conversation, a character would basically come in and say “hello, I’m here to do some exposition” Grin

Disappointing. Hugh Laurie is good, but the other actors were criminally underused. And in terms of production values, I don’t know if I was more offended by Sidse Babett Knudsen’s wardrobe (yuk!) or Helen McCrorys hair 🤣

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 25/10/2020 06:58

I thought the premise was good but yeah - not a single thing was concluded at the end. So, so many plot holes in it. It was pretty ludicrous in parts, and i found the lily character absolutely awful. I did like how his wife didn't sign the documents though. She's got herself a bit of power over him.

And of course, in real life people always start and end having sex with detailed conversations about their bosses. The ultimate turn on.

Egghead68 · 25/10/2020 17:13

I thought the same!

Yes it did look like London.

I was annoyed the irish girl got killed off so quickly.
Didnt like the family stuff or the prison stuff.
Generally disliked it.

unique1986 · 25/10/2020 22:46

It was always going to be just 4 episodes.
Not sure why. Big budget but not for another 2 episodes.
Collateral couple years ago on bbc 2 was of a similar style and only 4 eps.

unique1986 · 25/10/2020 22:48

Also the yeh the ending was very different to stand alone series Collateral. So if it keeps doing well in ratings it could well get another series.
I just was very disappointed.

Mischance · 25/10/2020 23:10

I liked the ending. Basically he was totally stuffed by the "little woman." Good on her!
