Did anyone watch this?
Sounds horrible to work there!

That Alice woman was so annoying and delusional if she thought the butler was really her friend. No, he's just being paid to be nice to you.

I felt sorry for her if her only friend was a butler who she paid to be nice to her

And that butterfly milk thing was just odd

icelolly99 · 15/10/2020 12:42

The butterfly milk thing was obviously a joke.....

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2020 15:49

I felt really sad for Alice. The butler is being paid to laugh at her jokes. She was getting tipsy at the bar alone. She looked desperately unhappy. I wondered what her home life was like to need that time alone.

Crinkle77 · 15/10/2020 16:15

I feel mean now on Alice. I suppose it was sad really. The butterfly milk thing was taking the piss out of these demanding customer's who want ridiculous things like the VIP in room 618. (Ahem Robert Dr Niro!!!).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2020 17:16

Oh was it De Nero in room 618?

I was trying to think of a big Hollywood Star.

The butterfly milk thing was weird. Probably put on for the camera. But taking the piss out of people, when she herself was getting pampered is a bit odd.

I wondered if she had a rich but horrible husband she was keen to escape.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2020 22:02

Tonight’s episode was so sad 😢

Crinkle77 · 15/10/2020 22:40

@DobbyTheHouseElk everyone on Twitter seemed to think so and they did show a clip of him at the end when they were at the Bafta's which was possibly a clue.

Crinkle77 · 15/10/2020 22:42

@DobbyTheHouseElk missed the last 20 mins. Why was it sad?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2020 07:03

@Crinkle77 good detective work. I did see him on the clip, but didn’t make the connection.

The last 20 mins were sad. They went from the big staff party and all the staff singing “we are family” to an empty building with the lights being turned off when they closed.

The managing director saying they couldn’t take all the staff back on when it re-opened. It only re-opened on the 24th September. It said it had never closed since it first opened.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 16/10/2020 09:06

The ending was so moving.

I liked how the Savoy clearly cares about its employees like that night in the hotel for seeing things to the customers
Perspective or that big bash award ceremony they did.

Ilikewinter · 16/10/2020 11:50

Well thats another programme that made me have that lump in the throat, it just shows that we had no clue of the shit storm that was heading our way. Ive recently watched another programme that followed train staff and they had similar manager meetings where covid was mentioned....then overnight the rug was pulled.

It kind of makes me feel even more angry with the government for not acting earlier.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2020 13:29

Was it the editing, but it seemed like lots of the staff were coughing. In a short space of time that has changed.

The way they spoke especially the butler said they were exposed a lot to international travel. Unwell people coming into the hotel in Feb and March.

I adored the programme and I’m sad it’s over.

DH was convinced Mary-Kate was wearing a hair piece. Did anyone else think so? I wasn’t sure. Her hair was beautiful.

Crinkle77 · 16/10/2020 14:36

Ah yeah that is sad. Watching all these programmes, like the one at Heathrow, made pre-covid knowing a lot of them will have now lost their jobs.

eatsleepread · 16/10/2020 17:42

I've only watched one episode so far, and really enjoyed it.
The weird Cuming couple. You just know that they are 'car keys on the table' types.

icelolly99 · 16/10/2020 18:27

I'll admit I did have a little cry by the end. I'm employed in a front of house/stewarding role and haven't had any work since mid March; 'The Savoy' programme has really made me miss my job and the people I work with. Sad

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2020 18:48

I hope I haven’t spoiled the ending for you..

I imagine that it was meant to be a six episode thing, but they had to stop filming after four.

I worked in a similar industry and yes, it’s hard seeing how fab work life was pre-covid.

The Cummings people were odd. He worked in the car industry. I think I agree they had a “keys on the table vibe”

I hope things worked out for Linda Bellingham’s son. He seemed so lovely and a bit lost.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/10/2020 16:12

I'm watching the thing now, on Ep4.
I think the Gordon Ramsay thing was totally set up.
No way would he speak like that when Jocky Petrie is in charge of the kitchen, and he's clearly known the Maitre D for years who surely would have gone and got the correct knife, or sharpened another, then bollocked the kitchen team for taking his.
I don't buy it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/10/2020 16:13

Whole thing that should say, as in the whole series.

motorcyclenumptiness · 17/10/2020 23:30

Is Thierry for real?? The way he carved that duck reminded me of the episode of Friends where Ross pretends to be a masseur and massages a client by poking him with spoons.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/10/2020 23:46

Ahhhaha, and uses toy cars!
Nah, I think that was made up as they are friends in real life.

motorcyclenumptiness · 18/10/2020 02:12

I find Thierry oddly charmless and unconvincing - I keep expecting him to be rumbled as Tel, a carpet-fitter from Basildon

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/10/2020 07:51

Grin I find the hotel a bit dated and old fashioned, all that red and black. There’s far better places to stay in London
motorcyclenumptiness · 18/10/2020 09:45

Did anyone else think so?
I think she's just young with the gorgeous swishy hair - and commitment to upkeep - of youth.
The florists are so talented - the flower arrangements are beautiful.

eatsleepread · 18/10/2020 13:07

I can see why Tony said that it used to be more glam, back in the 80s and 90s.
These days it's all nouveau riche, with tattoos and hoodies!
