Starts tonight 9pm
I haven't read the book or anything but looks good.
Also The 7.39 is repeating tomorrow and Tuesday same writer.

OP posts:
The80sweregreat · 25/09/2020 17:03

I've watched episode two today and the locations are nice but the actual story is a bit boring! Kat and the son are a pain and the wife is annoying.
I don't think someone like Connie would have even looked at him twice in real life. She was too much of a free spirit.
I might watch the rest , but I'm not that hooked.

JMAngel1 · 25/09/2020 17:53

I loved every minute of it, the vicarious European city fest, the realness of their relationship. It was so so sad - Douglas was always earnest in his efforts but his pedancy and petulance ultimately killed the relatiinship. The scene in Amsterdam would have been the nail in the coffin for me.

purpleme12 · 25/09/2020 20:49

I don't understand why one post on the thread was deleted for being a spoiler but then there's loads of others that talk about the rest of the episodes?

I've only watched the one on Tele so might come back here

HUCKMUCK · 25/09/2020 21:38

I read the book last year and have watched most of the series today. Love both.

I’m not the biggest Tom Hollander fan and was disappointed when he was cast but I like him in this.

motorcyclenumptiness · 25/09/2020 21:58

The locations were lovely and TH is always watchable but dear god that was a tedious masterclass in BBCTwee. The characters were so flat (except for Freya who wandered in from The Killing to be the token likeable character).

Auto · 25/09/2020 22:04

It sounds a good story but am not watching as I don't like Tom Hollander.

Medievalist · 26/09/2020 01:05

I absolutely loved this. It made me laugh and cry and the scenery was beautiful.

2Rebecca · 26/09/2020 08:02

I think that if a series is all available to watch and you don't want to know what happens then you don't read threads on it particularly if it's a previously published book. I don't mind knowing bits of what happens but if I did wouldn't open threads on that topic

Clawdy · 26/09/2020 08:47

But some of us like reading threads , on a weekly basis, so the spoilers maybe need their own thread.

Don't know. Oddly I think that post may have been about the book too.

It has become impossible to have a thread about a tv programme now. It seems everything is available to be binged.

Shame really, I don't have BBC iPlayer so have to wait for each week.

@purpleme12 we can start a week by week thread if you're interested. Not sure how m as my others would join in though Grin

purpleme12 · 26/09/2020 09:09

@CherryValanc yes I've noticed that too
I think it's a shame personally but a lot of people do seem to watch them if they're available don't they

I do have iplayer but I'm just going to watch it as it's on Tele. I always kind of thought the threads were about the ones that have been on Tele but I just remember now to check if they're on iplayer and come to thread after I've watched them all
You're probably right most people would probably watch them all I guess

Agree the telly addicts forum doesn't work anymore because everyone is at different stages in a series so impossible to have any discussion on it. I don't have access to bbc player or the time to binge watch even if I did so generally stay away from the threads now. This started off ok but now too many people commenting who have seen it all. Shame Sad

purpleme12 · 26/09/2020 10:16

I guess you have to do a thread specifically for people who are watching it at normal pace nowadays

ILikeTrains · 26/09/2020 10:25

I'm guilty of binge watching, I did the whole series last night. I was hoping for a more relatable story - having just waved goodbye to my own two dc's as they embark on university, but this was just so BBC drama. I don't relate to the middle class back drop of it, the teenage son was just odd and not like any teenage boys I've known. As others have said the timeline was strange and clearly didn't fit with the age of the actors. And who breaks up like that?

Having said that I did get emotional at times (could have been the wine I was guzzling). I guess I'm glad I watched it but husband was left wondering why we gave it four hours of our lives.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 26/09/2020 10:33

I've only watched episode 1 but found the eye rolling and little glances between the mum and son annoying. There has to be give and take in a relationship. Which means that accepting that your other half may have different ideas about what makes a good holiday. Also, he is right about the Louvre, if you don't go early in peak season it's horrendous.

lazymum99 · 26/09/2020 10:41

I much preferred the tv adaptation to the book. I found the book too slow.
I watched the first and then saw that it was on iPlayer and binged the other 3. But I don’t go on a thread until I’ve watched the whole series when it’s put out like that.
The boy was not a good actor. And it is surely very ususual for a 17 year old to wonder around Europe on his own with no money etc.
I can’t remember the ending from the book. Was it the same?

lazymum99 · 26/09/2020 10:44

My son watched one episode with me and remarked how like his Dad TH was! He’s right but luckily I am nothing like the wife and have more in common with TH character!!

middleager · 26/09/2020 10:48

I am worried I'm the TH character and it's given me some food for thought!

klippya · 26/09/2020 12:44

I have to say it was lovely but also envy inducing seeing all these beautiful places we can't travel to at the moment.

The80sweregreat · 26/09/2020 12:50

Italy is beautiful. I want to go back one day!

FatimaMunchy · 26/09/2020 21:10

They look rather old to have such a young son I was 61 when my son hit 18, as will a lot of Mumsnetters who have babies in their 40s be.

AKissAndASmile · 26/09/2020 21:24

Yeah, the number of comments about this is enough already 🙄

Davros · 26/09/2020 22:16

I think it's more to do with their age in the flashbacks compared to the present day

Bool · 27/09/2020 00:31

I tried to get into Succession and Schitt’s Creek. I really did. But ended up on the BBC instead. Am enjoying it.

Bool · 27/09/2020 00:32

And I don’t get the comments on their ages. They look the right age to have a 17 year old son. I thought the younger versions were set too late though.
