Toddlerteaplease that sounds like a spoiler. Some of us on here have only seen the first episode! Angry

ScouseQueen · 23/09/2020 12:39

Haven't watched any yet but loved the book so I will be. For me the husband was clearly intended to be annoying and well intentioned but unable to see what he's doing. I would say stick with it.

TinyMetalBirds · 23/09/2020 12:44

I didn't realise I had read the book until they were on the train and talking about schedules - then I was like "oh! It's that story!" I can't remember what happens though. have only seen first episode so far.

CoolYourBeansMySon · 24/09/2020 00:36

I get that it's written from Douglas's POV but I thought that it showed how alienated he is from his family - Connie and Albie are a team and he's on the outside looking in. Connie has to tell him how to communicate with Albie. She knows them both and has to mediate.

Dulra · 24/09/2020 08:44

Connie and Albie are a team and he's on the outside looking in Communication works both ways though and Albie seems pretty self absorbed he could try and make a bit of an effort with his Dad. I also feel Connie enjoys her role of being the go between

TheNewLook · 24/09/2020 11:32

Surprised at the casting of this. I found The actors playing Connie and Albie very unconvincing. Visually, her blonde hair and black eyebrows combo was off-putting and the boy was just a really bad actor. Makes you wonder about the calibre of the actors who were rejected. Just surprisingly weak casting.

gingerwhingerwife · 24/09/2020 18:53

I've only seen the first one. Felt very sorry for the dad. Didn't like the son ordering in the restaurant stuff the dad couldn't eat. Felt like bullying

AKissAndASmile · 24/09/2020 18:56

Albie and the mum are so annoying.

AKissAndASmile · 24/09/2020 19:26

I think I'm on episode 4. I'm in tears 😭

AKissAndASmile · 24/09/2020 20:00

Turns out it was episode 3 that's the tearjerker

2Rebecca · 24/09/2020 22:34

Towards the end I sided with the dad more as I felt the mum was deliberately making a me and my son unit and excluding the dad. She rarely took the dad's side on anything if he and the son disagreed

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2020 22:47

Yes. He really had little chance to get to know him. As it was all about mum. I can't believe she went home and just let him run round Europe on his own.

klippya · 25/09/2020 07:18

Everyone in this was very unlikeable! Except the lovely woman in Italy.

CherryValanc · 25/09/2020 07:18

I read the book years ago but I think I found him irritating and the son's relationship with him was down to his fathering.

In the programme (only seen episide1) I am finding I'm more sympathetic towards him and the son self-centered.

2Rebecca · 25/09/2020 10:40

Agree the woman in Italy was the only likeable character and should give rebound dad a wide bearth

Mrslafayette · 25/09/2020 11:58

Tom Hollander was great casting but Sakia Reeves was too old, it just didnt fit. She has a lovely voice though. I loved the book and quite liked the programme.

klippya · 25/09/2020 12:32

The younger versions of the characters had no chemistry whatsoever.

And the Connie character had no charm whatsoever.

ageingdisgracefully · 25/09/2020 13:29

I'm finding the book poignant and funny but the series dull.

Connie seems much more vibrant in the book - Loving Tom Hollander but agree that Saskia Reeves not a particularly good fit for the role.

I think in the book Douglas is 54.

For context, I'm 61Shock and DD is 18.

middleager · 25/09/2020 13:31

I've not read the book, but am enjoying the series. I'm on ep3 and in tears!

middleager · 25/09/2020 13:39

Oh and I agree about the age differences in the flashback and current day.

Bawbies · 25/09/2020 13:47

I enjoyed the TV version. But the book adds much more depth to the characters of Douglas and Connie by describing their past and in particular their families. This gave me more more empathy towards Douglas than the TV version and I thought it was a shame this was missed.

Davros · 25/09/2020 13:49

More context from me - I'm 60 and DD is 17! It's not as common as you'd think. I agree that the main characters are quite unlikeable although Albie and Kat are much worse in the book imo

Dulra · 25/09/2020 14:10

I don't think the issue is the age of son and age of parents it's more that the flashback says 24 years ago...based on their ages it would have made them 30ish in the flashback but they looked 20ish

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2020 14:42

Yes. The relationship shop with Freya isn't going to work as he still loves Connie.
