I found the show last night really flat. Matt and Noel seem to be morphed into one and neither appears very passionate about food or baking. I was surprised that I liked Noel on the last series and thought I wasn't fussed about Sandi one way or the other but actually I preferred them together than this combo Cake

*I think Dave's just way less at ease on camera than any of the others, and it comes across as intense competititiveness and gritted teeth, whereas I suspect he's just not a natural at being filmed. Really, if you think about it, it's far odder that many of the others, without any TV experience, are quipping away and being funny or drinking tea or helping one another out or not snapping at the presenters to sod off while they're trying to temper chocolate or make mango curd, with a camera permanently on them in a stressful situation.

But that's why they screen test the final twenty or so candidates in the tent before they make the ultimate selection -- they're selecting the final cut for ease and naturalness on camera, as well as getting a mix of men and women, ages and races etc.

Which does make sense. I bake well, but this is a feel-good programme, and the viewing public absolutely does not want to see my natural resting bitch face, not to mention the way I glower when I concentrate. I'm a perfectly pleasant person, but absolutely certain I would come across on camera as a grumpy, ultra-competitive hate figure, and spawned a thousand grumpy GIFs*

Yes I guess you're right, I'm always impressed how they can have a conversation with the presenters (and Pru and Paul) when they're making something really stressful, or not get flustered when either of the judges question their ideas or flavours. I'm sure I would end up mucking something up, dropping something or getting stressed out. It just end up mute and not be able to answer any questions!

acatcalledjohn · 30/09/2020 16:37

He deserved star baker though, especially after Sura the assasin's antics last week. Loved his PA sulk while leaving her to pick up his cakes from the floor. I'd have dropped my empty cake slate on top of her cakes (or head) 'by mistake'.

He deserved star baker based on this week, last week has nothing to do with that. As pointed out on this thread before she couldn't see him, but he could see her, yet all the flack is aimed at her. If he had dropped his slate on top of hers out out of spite he would have been out of the door faster than he could have said "oops".

The spirit of the show is lost on so many people.

awaynboilyurheid · 30/09/2020 17:43

Think Matt Lucas was v funny last night, " Lets talk about them know they've gone"! brilliant line! And I'm a hard to please in the laughs dept Glaswegian.
Might have known Paul would give the handshake to young pretty contestant, before anyone else, he really is turning into a letch.

CherryValanc · 30/09/2020 18:30

What's with all the Dave hate? He's just shy or socially awkward maybe

Personally I think if he's not interacting with Matt well then Matt , the paid professional, needs to adjust the way he act with Dave!!

RavenT · 30/09/2020 18:56

Whenever I see Dave I think he looks so much like Brandon Flowers...

Twospaniels · 30/09/2020 19:17

Rowan should definitely have gone home.

I wasn’t surprised it was Mak though as I got the feeling Paul didn’t like him, by the way he spoke to him. Can’t put my finger on it, but just the impression I got,

Ellmau · 30/09/2020 19:25

I thought this week was lovely!

okletsdothis · 30/09/2020 19:54

This! I know everyone is loving him, but I personally find Matt painfully unfunny.

I also don't understand why Dave is getting the blame for having his cakes knocked out of his hand last week, and then getting hate for not being immediately gracious and falling over himself to reassure Sura. She flailed her arm out at him completely out of the blue, why would he be anticipating that? I would have been way more pissed off about it than he was. I mean I don't think Sura is the devil incarnate either, it was an instinctual reaction to swat the fly away and clearly a genuine accident, but it was an accident that she caused.

I'm rooting for Dave (in case you hadn't guessed), Peter, and Lottie so far.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 30/09/2020 20:21

I like Peter, Sura and the two Marc/ks. The one without the big nuts (!) - is he Marc or Mark? - is very artistic. I loved the look of his biscuit table setting.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/09/2020 20:24

I like Rowan, but he should have gone home.

Also like Sura and the young lad that won star Baker last week.
I think Matt is hysterical! But I liked him before GBBO anyway.

Ellmau · 30/09/2020 21:57

I think I prefer the dynamic between Noel and Matt to that between Noel and Sandi, and for me I think it's partly because Sandi seemed to be approaching the show in a more ironic way, and Matt feels a bit - sweeter? - here. More in the much vaunted "Spirit Of The Show".

I wasn't a fan of his comedy, but he's coming across really well so far.

CassandrasCastle · 30/09/2020 22:02

I loved Mak! Partly because of his Bill Bryson cake. Rowan just gloriously doesn't seem to give a shit though, and I do enjoy him.

I'm not a Dave fan, I think he did seem a bit mean post the upside down-pineapple upside down cakes

MoonJelly · 01/10/2020 02:10

I like biscuit week least. It seems to me making models with biscuits requires construction skills, not baking skills; I'm sure my DS could make brilliant models with biscuits but he has no idea how to begin to make them.

BrieAndChilli · 01/10/2020 07:31

@MoonJelly but you could have said the same about last weeks show stopper - that required sculpting skills not baking!!!

wowfudge · 01/10/2020 08:29

I disagree - several times the judges said the biscuit dough had been overworked or underbaked, was too thick, etc. They're expected to bake something which meets the brief and tastes good rather than compromising to be able to mould anything they like.

ppeatfruit · 01/10/2020 09:57

Silly me Blush Of course each thread is a thousand posts , my excuse is I'm not getting many whole night sleeps!

Ref. boring episode, perhaps we're used to too much excitement! The gingerbread type of biscuit building has been done for many hundreds of years , it's not unusual and some of them tasted good so it can be done.

Lottie didn't get star baker, her quarantines (she made up the name I noticed when rewatching) were obviously the best but she buggered up her viking ship! She's a bit of a punk I like her. Paul gives men handshakes too (in the older eps). does he perve over them?

Though I didn't think Mak should've gone. I suppose it had to be one of the guys.

Alongcameacat · 01/10/2020 10:43

I like Mark with the toast biscuit, as a sculptor, he has an advantage.

Rowan makes good tv. I like him but expect he won’t be around for long.

Surely Laura should have gone this week. She didn’t make a free standing structure at all. She didn’t meet the brief. She should have gone!

Are they going to judge a ‘creative’ 3rd task every week this season? I can’t remember them doing that before until the final showstopper,
Why do they have to carry their structures to the front. Fair enough bringing a plate of biscuits but a high structure is just for drama surely? It annoys me every time!
I think the Bake Off has veered too much into the tv drama genre. I’m not a baker butI I never feel like I want to try baking anything after it. At one time I used try....

IntermittentParps · 01/10/2020 11:06

Mark with a k definitely sounds Northern Irish.

Laura is irritating me. "Hob nobs are posh where I come from, mate" she says, taking a pizza out of her outdoor pizza oven... I thought exactly the same thing! Have a word with yourself, Laura.

I'm glad Rowan stayed and I hope it gives him a kick up the arse. I think he felt guilty at staying in over Mak.

I like Dave. Noel and Matt were not funny this week and I thought his (non)reactions were spot on! N and M are sometimes funny when they're being spontaneous, but the scripted 'banter' and jokes are really not working.

I liked the Viking boat and Linda's delicate blue showstopper. Also Mark's Ethiopian set was colourful and bold, and Dave's was wonderful I thought – really characterful and original.

CherryValanc · 01/10/2020 11:27

Had the same thought about Laura's hobnobs are posh where I'm from - integrated to kn ou w where this place is that purpose built pizza ovens are common as muck, unlike a biscuit.

Still not getting in what way Mark was 'mean'. Was he supposed to sing with joy and dance with Sura because his work had just been destroyed by a flappy-arm-in-a-crowded-space incident? Why is it only her whose unthought through actions caused it allowed to be sad?

IntermittentParps · 01/10/2020 11:36

I don't think Dave was mean either.

I think he probably did hug her or tell her not to worry about it and it was edited out for drama.

Alongcameacat · 01/10/2020 12:03

I think he probably did hug her or tell her not to worry about it and it was edited out for drama.

I expect he was upset when it happened but afterwards did exactly that too.
I can’t see anything wrong with him tbh.
They seem a nice bunch this year. They have ticked the geographical, political, grader.boxes (and have some good bakers too) and it’s lovely, comforting, familiar tv viewing on cold Tuesday nights.
I laughed when Noel asked Lottie what it was like to feel Paul’s sausage fingers in her hand. Paul’s sex appeal has long gone and is just a joke now which I’m happy about —cheat—

PortugeseManoWar · 01/10/2020 12:18

@IntermittentParps

I don't think Dave was mean either.

The way he responded, suppressing the urge to snap 'Look what you've done!' and taking himself out of the situation till he could control his natural annoyance, is probably what I'd have done if conscious I was on camera. I mean, my natural urge would have been more like the NI guy whose Baked Alaska got ruined during the famous Bingate -- bin everything and stomp out of the tent, probably throwing my apron on the ground into the bargain. The absolute best I would have managed was pretty much what Dave did.

We're not all saintly Howard (was that his name? The extremely nice man from Custardgate, who was positively superhuman in his generosity to the other contestant.)

I mean, imagine you're in a stressful situation, and in a televised competition with a camera right in your face looking for drama as a competitor accidentally wrecks something you've spent a lot of time and effort working on, just before you're judged on it -- AND in the full knowledge that the viewing public was going to be analysing every expression and word!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/10/2020 12:53

I agree - I didn't like her the first week, but this week I thought she was lovely! Very witty, too.

lynsey91 · 01/10/2020 13:44

I like Lottie (well I like all of them) but noticed this week just how much she touches her hair. She keeps pushing a bit of it behind her ear and it doesn't stay there so she does it again. Then, of course, she is touching her bakes - yuk
