Can I ask what are the nature of the complaints that people are making?

Gosh, thats Daisy Goodwin.

That article made me howl as my Mum did something similar when I was 12, and now we are totally estrnged as she doesnt think she did anything wrong (among other reasons).

Still, not an excuse for this kind of programme, but it does make me feel a little bit sorry for her.

harrisey · 27/09/2007 00:26

I also got the same response to C4.

Will wait to see what Ofcom say

earthmummy · 27/09/2007 08:54

Morningpaper- has the NSPCC got back to you yet? I am going to write to them too.

If anyone hasn't seen this and wants to see it again, it is available from Channel 4's watch again service www.channel4.com/4od/index.html. You have to download the player application and subscribe to the service, but the last 30 days viewing is then free to watch. I have downloaded it to re-watch it as some of it beggars belief. But I am aware that a lot of rather nice and emotionally well-adjusted people, who adored their parents and felt really part of a loving family, were brought up by the Truby King method - including dh - so I can't see any case for a legal complaint. There is definitely a generational gap in the attitude to this method, though, which I actually find reassuring - dh was horrified by CV.

The Children's Project has started a petition to the PM: 'We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to take urgent action to protect infants and their parents from television programmes that promote outdated and discredited parenting theories.'

It was the second response that I received. None of my questions were answered.

PregnantGrrrl · 28/09/2007 08:05

i had a much more polite second reply- they said they were sorry that i felt they hadn't really responded properly, and that they'd pass the comments about government guidelines onto the production team.

it'll be interesting to see if they have some kind of disclaimer on the next show.

Poohbah · 28/09/2007 16:34

This is my complaint to Ofcom.

I am a Health Professional working for Social Services and have training in child protection. I believe the programme demonstrating Claire Verity's methods caused harm to the children involved in the form of emotional neglect.

Clare Verity's handling of the baby involved was rough and she referred to the baby as "it".

Mothers copying her methods would be placing their babies at risk of of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome as it is recommended that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for the first 6 months of their lives.

A method recommended was to leave a baby outside the door for 3 hours and to close a door it cannot be heard crying. If a baby cannot be heard crying or seen and checked on appropriately then it is being neglected.

The method advocates leaving a baby to cry, a crying baby is extremely stressful and to a mother can be unbearable. I believe that mother trying this method in the belief that it will help their babies to sleep through the night will be placed under a huge amount of emotional stress and may harm their baby as a result of this.

A mother on the show was seen to be drinking a very large glass of wine which therefore seem to condone drinking when caring for a new born baby. Presenting alcohol consumption to be acceptable increases the risk of a baby being neglected and could result in harm coming to that baby.

The programme also undermined breastfeeding which is proven to have many health benefits.

I would like the programme to be taken off the air as it is likely to result in babies being neglected if parents choose to replicate the methods shown.

I am disgusted that a programme like this has be aired.

I never seen the programme, i wish i had watched it now!

lissielou · 30/09/2007 10:33

i watched it on virgin replay and was horrified. even dh (who refused to be drawn on SWMNBN) was shocked. she seems to take pride in the fact that most parents think her methods are vile.

poohbar, great complaint

Poohbah · 30/09/2007 20:17

Cool little lapin! I'll be really annoyed if Channel 4 don't pull this programme.

GloriaMumble · 30/09/2007 21:39

Since complaining to Ch4 hasn't seemed to get a sensible response, I've just complained to Huggies who I understand are sponsoring this programme. I won't be buying any Huggies until it's pulled. Anyone know which supermarket brands they also make so I can avoid them too?

AitchTwoOh · 30/09/2007 21:51

Daisy Goodwin's mother is Jocasta Innes, interior designer and the woman who brought us rag-rolling in the 80s.
