Can I ask what are the nature of the complaints that people are making?

OP posts:
Piggy · 26/09/2007 08:49

I didn't watch it because I can't bear to see/hear tiny babies being left to cry. It literally makes me weep. What a wimp eh?

MrsJohnCusack · 26/09/2007 08:49

harpsi, I'd merrily complain about that too if it was on my TV screen

Piggy · 26/09/2007 08:50

Good point harpsi - why on earth would you agree to take part in an experiment like this on your newborn?

[bewildered]

morningpaper · 26/09/2007 08:50

Agree Twiglett, it is possible that the programme is completely within guidelines and regulations

Programmes don't need to be ETHICAL - c.f. Big Brother

oh I agree no-one really cares much about babies and mothers. believe you me, it's my life
never did me any harm etc.
breastfeeding doesn't matter etc.
birth doesn't matter etc.
doesn't stop me complaining though.

Piggy · 26/09/2007 08:54

Yes MP - but BB involved so called adults. This programme is experimenting on newborn babies

Who is Daisy Goodwin?

harrisey · 26/09/2007 09:03

I mentioned that it breaced articles 3, 6, 19, 31, and 36

of the Internationa Convention on the Rights of the Child

to which I beleive we are a signatory in this country.

barbamama · 26/09/2007 09:05

surely ofcom is there to monitor this - at least if they receive record compaints that production co will find it harder to get support for such stupid programs in the future maybe?

Dropdeadfred · 26/09/2007 09:12

Hopefully someone famous will speak out and say what a loon she is..

Theclosetpagan · 26/09/2007 09:14

The CPHVA (HV Association) were asked to take part in the programme but DECLINED and said that the methods (especially CVs methods)being used were outdated given the current level of understanding about the need for affection in the development of a baby's brain. They made the point to the silly cow of a producer that it was tantamount to experimentation on a helpless newborn utterly dependent on it's parents.
They made a major complaint and went as far as to say it was a Child Protection issue.

Needless to say the producer did not agree. Bless - presumably she was also dumped out in the cold for 3 hours as a newborn and starved of affection. Explains her desire to inflict it on others now.

Ooh - didn't even watch and am raging about the silly cow - and also the stupid parents who were thick enough to continue with the experiment. Maybe I am harsh but I DO know that if this had been me I would have said "sorry I cannot do this - physically, morally, emotionally or psychologically" and would have sent the TV crew packing - but not before they'd got a good shot of my baby getting the necessary and VITAL cuddle.

Wisteria · 26/09/2007 09:16

Totally agree with Twig.

GreebosWhiskers · 26/09/2007 09:19

I didn't (couldn't) watch the programme as I've read about her methods & think they're disgusting, cruel & neglectful. I've got a fair idea of how the programme went though from reading this & the other threads so am glad I decided to leave the TV off last night. I second what a few others have said - childcare guru my arse

DaisyMOO · 26/09/2007 09:25

I suggested last night that we make a list of companies advertising during the programme and target them saying we will boycott their products. I don't really think C4 care about complaints, but will mind about loss of revenue from advertising. What do others thinnk?

jamila169 · 26/09/2007 09:35

for anyone who's wondering what grounds to complain to OFcom on - here's the relevant section of the broadcasting code

The involvement of people under eighteen in programmes

1.26 Due care must be taken over the physical and emotional welfare and the dignity of people under eighteen who take part or are otherwise involved in programmes. This is irrespective of any consent given by the participant or by a parent, guardian or other person over the age of eighteen in loco parentis.

1.27 People under eighteen must not be caused unnecessary distress or anxiety by their involvement in programmes or by the broadcast of those programmes.

I think CV's involvement in ths programme ticks both boxes doesn't it

PregnantGrrrl · 26/09/2007 12:22

i've had a response:

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.

We are sorry to hear of your concerns about the methods used in the
programme.

BRINGING UP BABY is a thoughtful and responsible observation of
different
methods of childcare. There have been conflicting and different views
in
this area for many years and it is, without doubt, a valid area for
exploration in a television programme. The series is not setting out to
promote any particular method of childcare, but rather to explore and
contrast them.

All the parents involved were asked what style of child rearing
interested
them, the methods were then described in general terms, highlighting
the
guiding principals, each family then chose the method which most
closely
related to their instinctual choice. Each family reported that they
were
happy with the childcare method they chose and are still continuing
with it.

We can assure you, that we take the welfare of the children in this
series,
as with all programmes, very seriously. Various medical experts
including a
GP and consultant paediatrician were consulted and the babies received
the
usual regular health visitor checks.

Your complaint has been noted and logged for the attention of the
programme
makers, and we thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding
this
matter.

Theclosetpagan · 26/09/2007 12:27

In other words "Go away and stop bothering us".

Nice that they've taken your comments on board isn't it?

Theclosetpagan · 26/09/2007 12:28

Did they have a Psychologist on board - all the other people listed deal with the physical and not really much with the emotional.
