Not sure if a repeat. Doesn’t say r on the guide

A family gives up their 21st century technology and travel back in time. As they enter the 50’s it’s goodbye to their flat screen tv and hello to a piano and darning 😂

I don't remember seeing this before.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/06/2020 19:45

Radio times says it is a repeat though.

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/06/2020 19:54

Ooh! Are the Robshaws in it?

0blio · 08/06/2020 19:58

I'm watching. That was my childhood, Sunday school every week (how rude was she walking out of church?!) and Mum permanently in the kitchen.
The family aren't very handy, who does their DIY, cooking and baking? I can't believe the teenage daughter has never made a cake!

And a washing machine in the 50s? No-one we knew could afford one.

rwalker · 08/06/2020 20:02

Brilliant series

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/06/2020 20:27

Is it a repeat ? I’m at work so can’t see till tomorrow

Youngatheart00 · 08/06/2020 20:27

Also keen to know whether it’s new or a repeat?

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/06/2020 21:29

I think it must be part of the audition process finding people who are so hopeless at practical tasks. It worries me that the young girls in this type of programme think that cooking or making anything is beneath them. Not that it should be an exclusively female thing, and I think the dad in this family usually does the cooking, but it seems to be de-skilling a generation.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/06/2020 08:56

Just started watching and Yes sure I’ve seen this

Dad a sahd as a cm

Mum breadwinner

So kinda role reversal

Yes I've seen it but it's worth watching again. I remember my mum's first washing machine which was basically a box with an agitatator , you used large wooden scoop type things to pull up the washing to put through the mangle on the top. We were out playing with friends most of the time but we were little then. There were bomb shelters in the gardens that we used to play in!!

I loved those crinoline type dresses and petticoats, Mum wasn't keen on us wearing those. We were under 10 though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/06/2020 13:23

I R.E.M. the outrage at the church’ scene first time round

I do think funny they chose a family where mum
Doesn’t cook

It's the Ashby-Hawkins so it is a repeat. Absolutely lovely people.

Youngatheart00 · 09/06/2020 21:35

Have realised I have a bit of A Thing for Giles Coren....

ppeatfruit · 10/06/2020 09:14

(whispers) Me too (Youngat) !

I was and still am shocked at the piano smashing in the 60s, so weird when you think what they cost then and now to buy new. Mindless vandalism.

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2020 09:17

BITFTW was first broadcast about 3 years ago.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/06/2020 09:56

Ditto at piano smashing :(

OP posts:
Youngatheart00 · 10/06/2020 10:00

Yes I was shocked and saddened to see this in the trailer for the 60s one. Why on Earth did they / the producers feel it was ok to do this??!!

Youngatheart00 · 10/06/2020 10:00

Re Giles I have since googled and have found out he’s a bit of a Certified Shit but that hasn’t dampened my crush Blush

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/06/2020 10:04

Ooh! Are the Robshaws in it?
Sadly not. I miss Rochelle Smile

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2020 11:37

I don't like the piano smashing but I do think it was a 'thing' in the 60s. I remember it happening at fetes, always with old pianos beyond repair I think. I thought it was wasteful even as a child. Taking such glee at destruction seems wrong.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/06/2020 14:28

Rochelle was fab. Love to see her again cooking and opening tins 😂😂

OP posts:
Katinski · 10/06/2020 15:53

Rochelle opening tins was Comedy Gold!.
I like the lad and dad bonding over DIY.
Can't believe that the wonderful, witty, inteligent Victoria Coren Mitchell and that b. shitty useless brain-dead bro are actually related, surely a mix up at birth somewhere?Shock

ppeatfruit · 11/06/2020 09:48

Rochelle complained a lot but not quite as much as this Mum. Though I don't know where the researchers got the idea that the kids didn't help round the house . If we didn't help with the cleaning we didn't get any pocket money in 60s and 70s! (mind you I don't remember our little brother doing much housework) Also our Mum was working out of the house from mid 60s when our parents got a mortgage.

Youngatheart00 · 11/06/2020 21:39

Loved the one tonight - the VCR (as if it would be £2000 in today’s money, crazy), the Commodore 64, and watching Threads on a tiny portable TV (still one of the most impactful things I’ve ever watched).

And the garish fashions.....makes me nostalgic, even though I was only a small kid.
