Has she talked about that in an interview @Ritacornershop? You seem to know a lot about her motivations.

Of course there is no one British accent but there is one type of accent that tends to be done in American TV and yes I am generalising when I say “American” but hopefully you know what I mean.

ShiningTor · 23/05/2020 18:56

@Ritascornershop I think you have it! That's exactly as I imagine.

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 19:22

@SomeBunny - I thought I vaguely recalled Catherine O’Hara saying something along those lines, and having watched all the episodes I surmised. Just now I found this quote:

“ When People interviewed O'Hara, she said Moira's accent was a left over piece of all of the worldly travels that the character had taken. The family was wealthy at the time, so Moira was traveling, running around as a celebrity, essentially. She would have had the resources to pick up accents.”

LiveGr33n · 23/05/2020 20:16

Love, love, love this show. Currently on series 4, watching the Xmas episode.Don’t want it to end. Love David who reminds me of my son, Moira, Alexis,Stevie.... Love the way Mr Rose, David and Twyla are father, son and daughter in real life.

And Moira is the mum in Home Alone!!!

Love David and Patrick’s relationship. I want to live in Schitt’s Creek.

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 23/05/2020 20:22

@Ritascornershop I must say I’ve always found he “accent” ridiculous 😂

Love the way Mr Rose, David and Twyla are father, son and daughter in real life.

OMG I only realised today Mr Rose and David are father and son but didn’t know Twla was the real life sister

I watched an Alexis interview today where she was saying she first interviewed for Stevie. I wonder whether they wanted David’s real life sister as Alexis

LiveGr33n · 23/05/2020 20:30

Think they wrote it. I follow DanLevy on InstaBlush they seem like a lovely family.

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 23/05/2020 20:45

Well now I’m going to go follow David and Alexis on Insta GrinI like that her Insta is not all selfies and pics of herself posing

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 21:28

@SomeBunny, I just noticed you said American tv ... Schitts Creek is Canadian, and in all ways very different. Our tv industry has never produced much that’s been popular abroad (apart from Anne of Green Gables), the CBC has only recently started making what I’d call watchable tv (I liked Corner Gas, and of course SCTV, they weren’t CBC, but that’s unusual).

Doing any kind of British accent hasn’t been a part of our minimal tv output over the years that I recall.

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 23/05/2020 21:55

@Ritacornershop Yes I did. I acknowledged it was Canadian and I also said I was using the term American very broadly and in my experience Americans, Canadians and even other nationalities put on a very similar kind of Queen’s English accent when trying to be Bristish. That’s what Moira reminds me of. Just me. You don’t have to agree.

This is just for fun for me so if you want to pick apart everything that’s said then I suggest you find someone else to play with as you’re being a bit pernickety.

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 22:12

Heavens. I don’t want to argue about it, I was just stating a fact that our (Canadian) tv is not American. I don’t see how the word American can be used broadly, it refers to a nation that is to the south of me, to Canadians it never (ever) refers to us in any way. We are quite firm in our identity as a sovereign nation with our own culture and very different history.

Back to the Schitts Creek love please!

dicksplash · 23/05/2020 22:13

I love this show. It took a bit for me to get in to as I usually don't care for over the top characters but the heart of this show won me over. I'm so sad it's ended, I binge watched the final series in two days. Great ending for all the characters.

Patrick is the loveliest character, how he puts up with the madness of David I will never know but he does and I love him for it. I love Stevie and Davids friendship and watching it develop. David is exactly where he should be!

To the pp asking if it felt Canadian - if I'm honest I've always imagined much of Canada to be like parts of America- except for those areas that speak french - so if they said it was set in a part of America I would have believed it I think.

Gwynfluff · 23/05/2020 22:18

Underwhelmed by the final season. Made sense that Dan Levy had only planned 5 seasons max.

Didn’t seem Canadian - I’ve also watched Kim’s Convenience and that felt Canadian. Been twice as I have family out there.

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 23/05/2020 22:23

@Ritascornershop Maybe you didn’t mean anything by it and things can be misconstrued in text but I was only ever discussing my opinions on the show and characters and you have come across a bit argumentative on two of my posts. Now a third.

I’m sure it’s because you’re just passionate about the show and maybe Canada too but I can’t be bothered with you.

@dicksplash I took some time to get into it too hit the humour hooked me. I think it’s underrated as I don’t hear many people talk about it IRL.

Just realised though I’m posting on here instead of finishing season 6 so need to get my priorities straight! Then again I don’t want to finish..:

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 23/05/2020 22:25

Sorry typos - should read took some time to get into it...

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 22:31

The sensibility struck me as Canadian rather than American, visually it could have been in America too. It reminded me, in a way, of a softer take on Northern Exposure (if anyone remembers that), fish out of water experience, but with less angst.

AvocaLove · 23/05/2020 22:39

@Ritascornershop I get what you’re saying. I agree that in terms of what it looked like it could have been in America, but in terms of the sound and feel of the show I think it is very clearly Canadian. There’s a gentleness to it - like it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and yet what it is serious about is being nice! There’s no American intensity about it. (Not knocking America or American TV btw - I lived in the southern United States and consider it my second home - but Canada is a totally different place.)

I think the fact that it was a real slow burner in terms of popularity is also more Canadian - honestly if it had been an American show I doubt it would have lasted 6 seasons.

Have watched the documentary and loved it - it confirmed everything you would think to be true about the cast. The only thing I found weird about it was that Chris Elliott didn’t appear it in. He was the only central character who was missing from it and I found that odd.

Hamsterian · 23/05/2020 22:46

I love each and every single one of the characters.
Patrick has always been a jewel but really came into his own in this season.
Absolutely adore Ronnie too and how she hates Patrick because of the bathroom tiles incident

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 22:49

Thanks, yes that’s it exactly! In general I’d say American tv does tend to be rather intense, more obviously purpose driven (whether the purpose is getting a laugh or promoting a concept).

I think it was CBC produced, that’s where I watched it, and the national broadcaster would give it more time to find an audience than a US show, and also, given Canadian content regulations, they’d just be pleased to have a Canadian show being made that was drawing any numbers.

Maybe Chris Elliot wasn’t available? I think he’s the only one of the cast who is American (though not as big a name prior to this as Eugene Levy or Catherine O’Hara).

Took · 23/05/2020 22:50

I'm so mad about this show. So mad that it’s over.

I remember scrolling past it many times as the name put me off. Then the after the first episode thinking how am I meant to like this horrible family?! I only kept watching as I was stitching at the time and it automatically started the next episode. So so glad of that feature now as I'd have missed out on an amazing tv show.

I loved every one of them. Well Roland kinda made me go bleugh but he was written that way and did it so well! Grin I'm so happy they all got a happy ending (ha! 🤣). I was so worried something was going to go wrong! American and UK tv has set that up as the norm, good old Canada gave us exactly what we needed.

motorcyclenumptiness · 23/05/2020 23:42

Chris Elliott is (briefly) in the documentary (about 20 mins in)

Andylion · 24/05/2020 04:35

You might enjoy this.

Ritascornershop · 24/05/2020 05:07

Bebe!! 😂

Nospringchickendipper · 25/05/2020 09:42

Watched the last episode yesterday, cried at the wedding.
Loved the relationships between the different characters and sad it's ended.

caperplips · 25/05/2020 13:38

I am now re-watching the early episodes on netflix! I really love this show and the characters, it totally grew on me and I'm sad it's all over

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 25/05/2020 14:50

I just finished. I loved the last two episodes. The finale was wonderful; funny and touching.

I feel like watching it from the beginning too.
