Pride and prejudice is on BBC 4 at 8pm... episode 1. You’re welcome 😊

God, I loved this (and Colin Firth!).
Can't believe it was 25 years ago Confused

Ostanovka · 07/05/2020 20:30

Hurrah! Great time for a binge watch!

yellowbrickwhorl · 07/05/2020 21:01

Much glee here - I came in and sat down to watch, after about 2 minutes, DD (aged 21) sauntered in and said "What's this then?"

I suggested that she sit and watch with me, and find out.

She's completely hooked Grin Grin

WombatChocolate · 07/05/2020 21:06

It looks dated doesn't it - I think the colours have faded. But in my mind it's still the very very best period drama TV series there has been....and I've seen a lot.

Love Darcy and love Mrs Bennett too.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2020 21:20

It struck me how much the Colour has faded. I'm sure my copies of it aren't as faded. Still
The only good adaptation though!

bellinisurge · 07/05/2020 21:49

I absolutely love it. Never tire of it.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/05/2020 21:59

It needs a digital remaster. But yes, it is a classic.

MrsJamin · 07/05/2020 22:43

It's up there with sense and sensibility with Kate winslet for me. Jennifer ehle is so wonderfully tight lipped in it.

Rhubarb01 · 07/05/2020 23:03

In my opinion it's the best version made. I've seen it lots of times. It's often repeated on Drama as well. I've also got a soft spot for the studio based version with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul from about 1980 because it was the first TV version I saw, although I read the novel first. Elizabeth Garvie has a lovely playfulness in her manner.

I can't abide the Keira Knightley version or the very old film with Lauren Olivier. Both are great actors, but not for P&P in my opinion.

Rhubarb01 · 07/05/2020 23:04

Laurence Olivier of course Smile

WombatChocolate · 08/05/2020 10:56

I'd just like to say I had the theme tune as my 'going out' music at my wedding 20 years ago - the band who were playing in the church got the music and played it for us.

I thinking like it played at my funeral too. Not to be morbid!!

Back when it was on , my housemate and I had a framed pic of Mr Darcy cut out of the radio times on our mantelpiece.

It will always be a part of my life .....sounding quite sad now.

MrsJamin · 08/05/2020 13:38

Do you think James corden and Ruth Jones saw Alison Steadman in p&p before they cast her as Gavin's mum? The similarity between the characters are canny now I'm watching it! BTW they are all on Netflix if people want to watch ahead of episode 1. Don't you wish you could watch this back without knowing the plot, dialogue etc!?

Deathraystare · 12/05/2020 15:38

I rather enjoyed the Colin Firth and Rupert Everett version of The importance of being Ernest. Also starring Dame Judi Dench and Reece Witherspoon. Great fun!

kazzaD66 · 12/05/2020 19:47

I love The Importance of Being Earnest.
But then, I love Colin Firth and Rupert Everett. Remember watching them in Another Country, about 35 years ago Confused

An Ideal Husband is also good. Oscar Wilde suits Rupert Everett so well Grin

MrsJamin · 12/05/2020 19:52

I hurtled through p&p on Netflix and have now started Emma the 2009 bbc series, as I didn't watch it at the time. I might do the triple and watch sense and sensibility for the umpteenth time after that! It's what being on furlough means, right? Confused

Deathraystare · 13/05/2020 11:30

kazzaD66 I saw it wquite by accident as I was channel hopping! Glad I did. I loved the original but also saw it on stage with Gyles Brandreth as Lady Bracknell!

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2020 14:55

David Suchet was brilliant as Lady Bracknell in the Importance of being Ernest. The handbag line was absolutely hilarious!

ppeatfruit · 14/05/2020 14:33

I Love this version of P & P, miles better than the pretentious Keira K. movie version. as you say Rhubarb .

But I liked Larry Olly as Darcy A LOT!! He was perfect, though that film was soo much of it's time, they put the girls in crinolines and long ringlets ( they were in fashion about 50 years after JA wrote it !). They also changed the story line ridiculously.

Rhubarb01 · 14/05/2020 15:57

You know, ppeatfruit I might have appreciated dear, dear Larry more if I hadn't been so distracted by all the other monstrosities you mentioned. Wasn't it Greer Garson who played Elizabeth? I love a bit of old black and white movie magic, but that was so Hollywood it lost the plot altogether, as you say, literally!

In a way, it was the complete opposite of the Keira Knightley drab and muddy version with the messy hair - now I'm straying into Sanditon territory again.

If I had to cast my perfect version it would be Colin Firth as Darcy, Elizabeth Garvie as Elizabeth, probably Wickham from the 1980 version, google tells me Peter Settelen, Mrs Bennet from the 1980 version (far less strident but equally silly in a more genteel way that makes Mr Bennet's proposal to her seem more credible) and Mr Bennet from the 1995 version. I don't know if it's true, but someone on the Sanditon thread said ITV were planning on making another version of P&P - saints preserve us! Still, it won't be anytime soon.

Andylion · 14/05/2020 17:10

@Rhubarb01, David Rintoul was my first Darcy. ❤️

Andylion · 14/05/2020 17:13

@ppeatfruit But I liked Larry Olly as Darcy A LOT!! He was perfect, though that film was soo much of it's time, they put the girls in crinolines and long ringlets ( they were in fashion about 50 years after JA wrote it !). They also changed the story line ridiculously.

That bit at the end with Lady Catherine was ridiculous.

However, Oliver's dark, brooding cheekbones.
(Who knew cheekbones could be broody?)

MrsJamin · 14/05/2020 18:00

You can't get a better darcy than Colin firth. He does pride ever so well. Such a shame the BBC didn't shoot it on proper film, the colours, 4:3 aspect and grainy texture does the beauty of the version no justice.

ppeatfruit · 15/05/2020 08:26

Yes Rhub It's worth watching just for Larry , he was sex on legs!! Oh and a good laugh! As Andy says, I nearly dropped me tea when they had Lady Cath. de Burgh saying at the end she likes " gels with spirit"

I was thinking that Oscar Wilde probably set his Lady Bracknell on her.

ppeatfruit · 15/05/2020 08:31

MrsJamin I liked CF as Darcey but the way he was directed was a bit strange,; all that 'trying to overcome his sexual infatuation" , by fencing ,swimming etc. it was a bit much IMO. JA would NOT have approved !

Like the nonsense Of KK on a swing in a muddy farmyard. Instead of collecting the eggs in it.

Fleamaker123 · 17/05/2020 16:28

When he watches her play the piano and their eyes meet... Sigh
