Anyone else watching this?

Funny how, despite the children being nothing but bones the carers are all well (over) fed. This is horrendous, I never thought I would see worse than the Romanian Orphanages.

And the "Director" says what the orphanage needs most is a computer! Obviously for her own use and stuff the poor kids!

where is the petition? Sorry there are to many posts on this thread, so, if anyone could please give me the link, please!

I watched the programme last night and whilst I was feeling physically sick watching it, I had to watch it, if that makes sense.
The attitude towards those poor children and young people just made me so so sad, and it broke my heart watching Didi slowly loosing some of her spirit and soul, but what a strong girl to be able to hold onto it so well in such surroundings.
Those children were treated like animals, and well, animals experience more kindness most of the time.
That director....oh.....I could have slept her stupid face, what a cow blaming it all on her staff...whilst of course they were partly to blame, it's her responsibility to a)employ capable staff and b)to train the staff, and well, seeing that her attitude towards those under her care was appaling, it's no surprise that the general attitude of the staff was as it was
I suppose they were completely numb to what happened around them....they had to be to act in such disrespectful manner.
The part where the one carer talks about the experience she had with one of the children in Hospital, well, where she said that she was surprised to see others reacting so shocked about the state of the poor Kid....that says it all
I wonder how many of those children are dead now
I am 100% sure that if more care, respect and physical contact, as well as mental stimulation would be given, the Kids would look different. Failure to thrive is, afterall, not just down to malnourishment
I know, I probably just repeated what otehrs have said before me, but I needed to write my thoughts down.

Frizbe · 19/11/2007 23:26

Have signed the petition and emaild it to friends as well. I too saw the programme and was disgusted with the treatment of these poor children Gutting.

HELLO TO ALL
Please vist the web sight for Bulgarias abandoned childrens trust, here is the link
www.tbact.org/
Please sign the petitions
petitions.pm.gov.uk/Children-Dying/

www.ipetitions.com/petition/bulgariasabandone dchildren/
This is on the web sight i have copied the best bits for you to read.

The main finding of the team confirmed that the overall standard of care provided to all 65 children in that institution was bad and the staff was not adequately qualified.
The situation of 3 children was critical and they were hospitalized, while another 20 children needed immediate additional care and feeding to alleviate deprivation caused by meagre nutrition and care.

Based on the assessment and the plan developed by the Government?s Social Assistance Agency a group of care providers and medical experts is being selected and will start working in the institution this week. They will provide immediate emergency care and psychosocial support to children while at the same time the individual assessments and plans for alternative care are developed. UNICEF has requested the Government to provide additional information on the conditions of care in other institutions for children with disabilities as part of the review of residential care system.
This is good news i'm sure you agree
STOYAN stole my heart, bless his little skin and bones body
VASKY with her broken leg, and just wanting to go out side
SAMIR wanting a cuddle from Kate at the end,
GOD BLESS THEM ALL

3andnomore · 21/11/2007 17:08

Tazhopes, great news that something is being done now.
If I could I would volunteer my services and help out in person....Milen (?) and the way he was abused by that staff....it made me so angry, he just wanted to help and despite living there so long I think he really held onto his spirits....I wonder how severely he really was actually mentally disabled, or if the fact that he had a cleft lip and palate automatically stigmatised him as being mentally slow...been wondering this since watching it, as it has happened to me personally that people think that because I have a cleft lip/palate, that I also must be slow...people can be sooo ignorant!

bogie · 21/11/2007 17:14

sooo happy somthing is being done

Tazhopes · 21/11/2007 18:38

3andnomore,
I have volentered to go out to Mogilino home and help out,i am not qualified in any way, but i am very very good at handing out hugs and cuddles, i e-mailed the team at the address on there web sight, they need people of all sorts to help out there, hopefully going for a week in the new year, i have set up a monthy donation to the sight, really don't mind giving to them. I am desprate to get out there and see STOYAN, VASKY AND SAMIR, i really can not believe this treatment goes on in the year 2007, at least now i can go to bed and think that they are starting to get a bit of a better life, after i sore this in september i could not sleep for days (no lieying)all i thought about was the children and i kept crying, it took ages for information to come out about what was starting to happen and the start of the trust.

Hi all,

Has actually taken me a couple of days to get over the horror of watching that programme.

I don't know if anyone else has already mentioned it but Kate Blewett the director has a web site in which she talks about the future project for these children.

They have been given permission to move the children from the orphanage into a new building and are hoping to do it before xmas

Website address is:www.truevisiontv.com/abandoned_help/index.htm

magic5 · 21/11/2007 21:21

I emailed a couple of charities the first time this was show and now have received this email:
You emailed us a couple of weeks ago after watching the documentary showing the lives of children living in an institution in Bulgaria. I am writing to give you an update on the current situation of these children. As a result of the documentary, our Bulgaria office has taken a lead role in getting relevant NGO?s to work together to help the children living in this institution in particular. UNICEF has also developed an Action Plan to ensure that an assessment of every child is done and that specialists are brought in to provide appropriate physical and psychological assistance immediately, but in the long term to provide appropriate care solutions for each of them. At this moment, UNICEF is working with the NGO partners and the Government to implement the plan and we are currently seeking funding to support this plan.

We are now accepting donations from people wishing to help the children in this institution. Should you wish to donate please call:

3andnomore · 26/11/2007 13:26

Taz, how wonderful that you will go out...I really would love too, but with 3 children of my own it's just not feasable at this time.

Tazhopes · 30/11/2007 10:26

3andnomore i found this bit of information about Milan, who got moved to a diffrent home, i've coppied and pasted it

BAPID has been making efforts to improve the situation in the home in Mogilino for 2 years. We put four children at a weekly kindergarten in Russe. Thanks to our Ireland partners 6 children attended the Day care Center in Russe. Two of the main characters in the film - Milen and Mihail - were taken out of the institution and settled at BAPID's protected home in Pazardjik in February 2007.
At least these to are now safe and away from anymore abuse, and help is starting to get to the othere little ones.
GOD BLESS THEM ALL xxx

3andnomore · 04/12/2007 16:26

Aww Taz....that is great news for those 2!

Tazhopes · 05/12/2007 10:26

NOT SURE WHO HAS READ THIS, SO IV COPPIED IT

below a summary of the latest news:

Following the controvesy that ?Bulgaria?s Abandoned Children' has stirred in the UK and Bulgaria, direct action has been taken to improve the immediate care of the children at Mogilino to ensure that they receive improved standards of nutrition, exercise and therapy.

An alliance of key organisations has been formed to put in place the immediate recovery plan whilst long term care options are resolved for the children. Unicef is leading this alliance and we are supporting their efforts.

The first stages of the plan have been undertaken. Each child at Mogilino has been assessed so that individual rehabilitation programmes can be put into place to ensure they have the suitable levels of therapy and care that they need. These programmes are starting to be implemented and speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists are starting to work with the children. More therapists will be needed in future months.

The children?s diet, which was an area of great concern to so many of us, is now being greatly improved. A paediatrician assessed the children in early November and judged one third of them to be malnourished and dehydrated and as a result some of the children were hospitalised. Nutritional supplements continue to be given to the children and the new local major is providing an additional 4,000 lev to the food budget. Some local companies have also made food donations. Menu plans have been developed and it is now felt the children are receiving enough food including fresh fruit and their general diet has improved.

The kitchen and hygiene standards at the Institute were considered unsatisfactory and local health services have been called in to improve this.

The Director of the Institute resigned in mid November.

The management of the specialist care work at the institute is being handled by two Unicef representatives.

The care staff are still in place and are receiving supervision.

The new Mayor has arranged for a house in the village to be available for the Unicef team to live in whilst they carry out their work at Mogilino.

Some specific information about the children

Didi is still at Mogilino and is not showing any signs of improvement yet. However a team of Bulgarian lawyers have taken on her case to argue that Didi has been arbitrarily detained. This is critical to any long term plans for her.

Stoyan was hospitalised and has had an operation to help him to digest and absorb his food.

Vasky was also hospitalised. She has now been discharged and is back at Mogilino. Her rehabilitation programme has begun.

Milen is at the Protected Home he was sent to after the abuse he suffered at Mogilino and is doing really, really well.
We will continue to monitor the situation at Mogilino and report to all our supporters on a regular basis.

We continue to campaign for political pressure and can announce today there will be a meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels in the new year.

A number of MEPs have been firing in Parliamentary Questions about the subject since the documentary was first aired on the BBC and many constituent letters have been generated by the film.

In the light of that Kate Blewett has been invited to show the film in the European Parliament, before which there will be a hearing on the whole area of the state of care in the Bulgarian mental health sector. This meeting will be taking place on the afternoon of the 4th March 2008.

Kind regards and thank you again for your support

Taz xxx

TwoIfBySea · 05/12/2007 12:17

I got that email too Taz and the best thing in it (almost) is that the director has resigned. About time too!

I was pleased to see that the local community are becoming interested as well.
