The National Theatre production. James Corden on stage at his best! We saw the original in London. The funniest play ever. Don’t miss it.

Yes we are so looking forward to seeing this again tonight. Highly recommend!

lynsey91 · 02/04/2020 18:38

Me and DH saw it on stage with James Corden and loved it. We both were crying with laughter and I got a pain from laughing so much but just could not stop.

We are going to watch it and I have told all my friends and neighbours via facebook about it.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 02/04/2020 20:40

I had been looking forward to this, having missed both stage and live-streamed iterations.

I am not enjoying it at all. Nor finding it particularly funny. I've seen trailers - but I guess I was expecting a proper 'play'. Bit too much slapstick for me.

Perhaps it's the wrong moment.

Litthefirealready · 02/04/2020 21:24

I was really excited too but I found it so hard to watch that I gave up after 20 mins. It was so shouty, I think I just have to accept that seeing it live was the only way to see it.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 02/04/2020 21:25

It was brilliant live-we saw it back in the day but can see how it might not stand the test of time on the telly-

Optimist1 · 02/04/2020 21:29

Sadly, I was disappointed too. As @PerditaProvokesEnmity said, too much slapstick for me. I gave it an hour before I turned off.

Charley50 · 02/04/2020 21:57

I watched about 7 minutes and it just seemed so lame and old school. I might try a bit more another day though as I did give up before anything had actually happened.

EachandEveryone · 02/04/2020 21:59

I gave up as well. I think you had to be there.

Xiaoxiong · 02/04/2020 22:11

We loved it!! Had never seen it before and thought it was hysterical.

TheWordmeister · 02/04/2020 22:15

We were looking forward to it but gave up after 45 mins.

Bit cringe.

LizziesTwin · 02/04/2020 22:17

I saw it live & tonight. I think the big problem with filmed plays is that they focus too much on the person speaking and don’t give you the whole stage. I think they also use sound from the performers’ mics rather than from a mic in the audience so the actors seem too shouty. I’d rather see the whole stage than have my view selected by the camera man. A stage play filmed isn’t a TV programme or film and shouldn’t be treated as one.

CoolCarrie · 02/04/2020 22:22

I hope they show War Horse as part of this,, both live and the National Live version were excellent.

Destinysdaughter · 02/04/2020 22:25

Was so disappointed in this. I found it about as funny as watching an episode of Mrs Brown's Boys! Was pretty racist, homophobic and sexist too...Really don't get what all the fuss was about. Switched off after half an hour!

BonnesVacances · 02/04/2020 22:26

I loved it and I normally hate slapstick. It was long though. I feel like I aged 5 years while watching it.

Now looking forward to Joseph tomorrow night.

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2020 22:29

I do find a similar filming problem with ballet from the ROH. I’m used to seeing the whole stage when I’m there. I can see what all the dancers are doing on stage and how they complement the main action. When it’s filmed you see close ups and virtuoso performances in isolation. I’ve decided I need to see both.

We enjoyed tonight. Not as funny as being there but it’s good to have a reminder of what live stage performance is all about and why some of us are missing it, a lot.

We sat down with popcorn and drinks and are going to every Thursday. Really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. But it was a bit shouty.

NemophilistRebel · 03/04/2020 00:11

We hoped to watch tonight but missed it

Is it possible to watch it on ‘catch up ‘?

SunshineAvenue · 03/04/2020 00:16

Available for 7 days.

Loved it. Had seen it at The National so was more of a nostalgia trip for me.

It was farcical and slapstick and a barrel of laughs imo. It's set in the 60s (though not written then) and needs to be watched in the context of those times.

Really looking forward to the others. Jane Eyre next, can't wait!

NemophilistRebel · 03/04/2020 00:21

Excellent! That can be our Friday night treat! Love that companies like this are doing things to get people excited

Bouledeneige · 03/04/2020 00:24

I think I'd rather gnaw my limbs off. Hated it at the theatre - hate slapstick and particularly can't stand the unfunny Mr Corden. What a way to treat an depressed population!

BubblesBuddy · 03/04/2020 00:49

It was great in the theatre. Great comedy and atmosphere. Actors on the stage speak very differently to those on tv. They are projecting their voices and it tends to come across as loud. If anyone doesn’t like James Corden or slapstick why would you pay top London prices to see it? It certainly has elements of melodrama as well as slapstick which isn’t seen much on the stage these days. The slapstick acts associated with pantomime have died out. I think it’s fun to bring it back.

I saw "A servant of two masters", the original version of this play recently. It was overlong and not sharp enough. So I was interested to see this more modern version.

It was a bit better, but it goes on too long so I felt the same "just finish please" by the last half-hour.

Goosekettle · 03/04/2020 07:38

We enjoyed it, although I did think it was adult panto. The close ups of the actors annoyed me too at first, but I found I got used to it. It's definitely not the same as being there, but anything better than nothing at the moment.

I'm going to try globe theatre next.

Where can I watch Joseph please?

Egghead68 · 03/04/2020 07:40

I watched a few minutes but it really wasn’t for me.

Cyprus Avenue, on the Royal Court Theatre website, on the other hand, is excellent.

Pleasedontdothat · 03/04/2020 07:40
