Its on channel 4 9pm tonight. I am just watching now. I was reluctant because I wondered if there was any hope for these young people with the advice and support they are being given at this hospital.

It upsets me greatly you see because I have been obese my whole teen and adult life up until I was 52 years old and I discovered the secret to losing excess fat and maintaining that loss permanently. Well, I'm 56 now, so four years.

That little girl doesn't seem to have been given any useful advice. "Watch what you are eating". Yeah, right. The professionals don't know any more than the patients.

Awful woman.

GoldenKelpie · 04/03/2020 22:02

Low carb not mentioned once. Sigh.

Children need carbohydrates for energy, it's not the same as for adults. It's dangerous to cut whole food groups out of a young persons diet. Together to tip the energy balance to lose weight, burn more than they take in. Less calories, more exercise, it's not hard to understand.

GoldenKelpie · 04/03/2020 22:48

Billy less calories makes you hungry, more exercise makes you hungry. Add to that eating a low fat diet high carb, that too makes you hungry. It is a triple whammy. That is why that type of dieting doesn't work and the dieting industry is multi-million industry.

I am an expert with more than 40 direct years of dieting experience. I know it doesn't work.

It might sound like sensible advice but it is not.

The human body makes glucose in the liver by a process called gluconeogenasis (google it). Our body makes the exact right amount from protein if there are no carbs ingested. Our body is very clever like that.

The obesity, type2 diabetes, fatty liver explosion in our population particularly younger and younger people is because the dietary advice we have been given for the past 40/50 years DOES NOT WORK and makes people hungry and fat. Human body is not impressed with this advice and makes us fat and sick as a consequence.

Tommy needs to be in care, his 'mother' should be ashamed of herself. She's disgusting.

DropYourSword · 05/03/2020 01:42

For you. You are an expert for what does and doesn’t work for you. That doesn’t make you an expert generally!

Cremebrule · 05/03/2020 06:41

The programme clearly showed it was much more complex than x or y diet. There was one child with a genetic condition, one was emotional eating and one seemingly had a feeder mother. Low carbing isn’t going to fix any of those issues.

Nanamilly · 05/03/2020 06:56

You’re an expert when it comes to you. No one else.

JustDanceAddict · 05/03/2020 07:14

Tommy’s mum was awful. I was shouting at the TV!
I’m no expert but cutting carbs is def a good way to diet but the advice might be different for teens as they’re still growing upwards too.
Felt bad for the little girl, she has a genetic disorder but the mum is going to struggle until she gets on that medication.

There was a prog on years ago called The House of Tiny Tearaways with Dr Tanya Byron(psychologist) - children had sleep/ eating/behaviour probs and it always turned out to be a parent problem. The parents relationship with their own parent / abuse / fear of something happening to the child etc . We are all prone to this imv to a lesser or greater extent. So what they need to do is bring on psychologists for the parent. I didn't watch the prog as imv the probs are fixable so too irritating to watch. But I have a relative who feeds poor quality food to her DS who was a prem- laziness partly, why peel a potato when you can cook oven chips.

Chocolatecake12 · 05/03/2020 07:46

They needed to see a psychologist which wasn’t mentioned until the end. And Tommy’s mother made it all about her and not him. She needs help to sort out her own issues, the clinic didn’t stand a chance really.

BorneoBabe · 05/03/2020 08:01

With kids, I wonder if it would be worth it to prescribe (as in the NHS pay for) a personal trainer or a kid-centric exercise program to keep him active. I don't mean fat camp, which seems to be too temporary. The boy could really do with a mentor/support system who can show him how fun and feel-good exercise can be. Dieting matters more of course, but once he gets moving he might feel more motivated.

I know the NHS is stretched, blah, blah, blah, but preventing 60+ years of possible health problems sounds like a no brainer.

Bestnewshoes · 05/03/2020 08:09

That mum was awful, those poor children

prampushingdownthehighst · 05/03/2020 08:10

After watching this my over riding opinion was that it showed exactly what the nhs and it's workers are up against at times.
Must be very very frustrating.

SouthWestmom · 05/03/2020 11:15

Watching it now. What is wrong with Tommy's mum? There's something going on there that they aren't showing.

Poor Liliana, thank goodness they tested. You could see her mum was trying.

All the parents are fat though, surely that can't help. Shouldn't they do a whole family diet?

SouthWestmom · 05/03/2020 11:21

They need to get mum out the picture. That kid stands no chance with her and her issues.

TreeTopTim · 05/03/2020 13:22

Tommy's mum was awful. It seemed like she did everything to not help her child.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/03/2020 13:23

I’ve read about this is the paper, I looked at the mum & thought problem right there.

If he loses weight that means it’s the home environment causing it & not just a medical problem. So she sabotages it.

SisterFarAway · 05/03/2020 14:00

I watched this last night and Tommy's mum made me really angry. I bet that if she hadn't been in the room when the nurse came for a walk, he would have jumped at the chance. But because mum was there he didn't.
He'd have a real chance of losing weight if his mum wasn't sabotaging any efforts.
I think this would actually make a great series, maybe loosely following them for a few years without being sensationalist (if that makes sense?).

SouthWestmom · 05/03/2020 14:05

Mum seemed to have a lot of unmet needs which made me think maybe she had a mental health or emotional issue and she really wanted the health care attention on her. I would like to know the back story and where dad was, or if she had friends/ a partner.

Pandamoore · 05/03/2020 14:08

Kids mum is a big ol'narcissist (or similar). You can tell with how its actually all about her and what she 'needs'. How she kept saying things to whip the carpet out from under those trying to placate her. They were trying to be nice and she wasnt happy because she wanted to be the victim so she kept changing the goalposts. Textbook stuff.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/03/2020 15:47

If he stays that size the chances of him meeting someone is lower so he never leaves home & she’s always got a companion.

They should have a social worker for that poor kid.

I was overweight as a teen due to a mother who didn’t want me to be attractive to men. Utterly pathetic.
