One of the characters was wearing tricks from CTM's dress!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/02/2020 09:28

Not getting the love for Sewell either!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/02/2020 10:53

I first saw Rufus Sewell in the BBC adaptation of Middlemarch which Google tells me was 26 years ago! Shock He was extraordinarily beautiful then and he's worn extremely well. Good actor too ...

cologne4711 · 10/02/2020 12:09

Was the word 'scam' really in common use in 1961

And did people really say "I'm so excited for our trip" in 1961.

Grrr anachronistic dialogue.

DH commented on Hermia making her own canapes.

And yes Much Deeping was definitely nowhere near Surrey (or Hampshire, come to that).

StarbucksSmarterSister · 10/02/2020 12:38

I first saw him in Middlemarch too, all cheekbones and Byronic curls .

I liked it! But then I have been engrossed in every Agatha Christie adaptation by Sarah Phelps (and I love, love, love Agatha Christie’s writing).
I like changes; omitting characters or introducing new ideas. I don’t want to watch another regurgitation scene by scene of the novels or short stories. Gives it an element of surprise!

nibdedibble · 10/02/2020 14:15

I see your Middlemarch and raise you Cold Comfort Farm, oiled and shirtless and absolutely beautiful.

Arseaboutdarkly · 10/02/2020 14:26

I like the ITV version of this with Julia McKenzie - jj field was really good in it, me and ds really like him.

I vowed never to watch another Sara Phelps travesty after the last thing - I can't understand why the bbc is so in thrall to her? Sounds as if I made the right decision. There's nowt wrong with making changes but if you can't write decent characters or keep the tension going then you're just going to make a disappointing mess.

I used to fancy Rufus Sewell but he's starting to look a bit creepy imo

woodhill · 10/02/2020 18:26

He was Charles 2nd too I think

Not sure about this, I'd rather watch something close to the books.

SouthWestmom · 10/02/2020 20:00

When is the last part? Is it next Sunday?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 10/02/2020 21:15

Absolute sacrilege! He's better than ever.

Footle · 10/02/2020 21:35

I searched Scam and it dates back to an FBI operation in 1980. Allegedly.
We definitely did not say "I'm excited for that" in the 60s. Or even in the noughties afaik

xsquared · 10/02/2020 23:20

What bothers me is that Kaya Scodelario is 27 and is made to look, what, late 30s, and Rufus Sewell is 52. How old are their characters meant to be? Why are they not using actors who are closer to their character's age, especially if they're playing a married couple?

I haven't read the book so I can't compare but it doesn't look very AC to me. Did Sarah Phelps also do the ABC Murders, because that was abysmal. DD and I ended up watching the David Suchet version on ITV2 when it was out a couple of Christmases ago.

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/02/2020 23:26

Did people say ‘sorry for your loss’?

I think of that as being a very recent and American turn of phrase (not that there is anything wrong with American phrases but they have no place in 1960s London)

And I agree with the village being completely wrong.

Smidge001 · 10/02/2020 23:42

Just agreeing with everyone that that village was nothing like a Surrey village.

And that Joan Hickson is indeed (and always will be) the very embodiment of Miss Marple.

TheoriginalLEM · 11/02/2020 06:54

I enjoyed it and have just downloaded the book (So i can imagine Easterbrook as Rufus Sewell - sigh) but from reading this maybe I should suspend my disbelief and hold off on the book for a bit.

AnyFucker · 11/02/2020 07:02

When is the next part on please

GinisLife · 11/02/2020 07:18

Rufus Sewell in A Knights Tale. Those eyes behind a visor. Oooohhh he's gorgeous. But I heard him on Graham Norton a few years ago and he sounded a bit of a luvvie

AnneKipanki · 11/02/2020 07:33

Rufus in "Zen".
Wonderful. Stylish. Gorgeous.

ApplesinmyPocket · 11/02/2020 09:03

When is the next part on please?

Sunday at 21.00. I really enjoyed this. The moment when the three women turned to look at Mark in the undergrowth was seriously creepy!

I love Agatha (agree - Miss Marple= Joan Hickson) and have read all her books, many more than once. I don't remember The Pale Horse particularly; maybe that's why I was able to enjoy this so much!

IntermittentParps · 11/02/2020 14:39

TBF, the godson did say to him 'Isn't that the point of having a young wife?', which suggests that she's meant to be younger than him. But she does look a LOT younger than late 30s –is that really how old she's meant to be?

cologne4711 · 11/02/2020 14:44

Yes it was so good.

He was very good in the Man in the High Castle but not sure it would be appropriate to ogle a high ranking Nazi official!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/02/2020 14:46

IIRC, in the book Mark's exact age isn't given but from certain details given which Sarah Phelps has not seen fit to use in this adaptation, I'd say he's meant to be in his mid 30s, i.e. 15-20 years younger than Rufus Sewell. Hermia is his girlfriend, not wife, in the book, and she's said to be in her late 20s. So totally gratuitous decision to pair off older man with young woman.

cologne4711 · 11/02/2020 14:48

I just saw this video:

(keep the volume down if you are in an open plan office)

And love this comment: Pretty sure she spoke for most of the sane and straight female population at 0:47.
