Miss Americana (the Taylor Swift documentary)... anyone watch it?

Has anyone else seen this on Netflix?

It's really good. She's fascinating, yet totally normal. And, despite the fact that she has been very fortunate to be extremely successful (100% due to her natural songwriting talent though), she has also had a disproportionate amount of mud flung her way in the past 14 years. She's definitely made mistakes though (probably in my eyes her biggest mistakes have been certain single releases though).

I'll own up and admit that I love her, and I think most people would feel the same if they actually listened to her music or looked past the headlines.

Some very interesting topics covered in it. Politics, sexual assault, eating disorder etc.

Watching it now. Love her.

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 08/02/2020 17:05

God it's so sad seeing her talk about how she needs to do as much as she can now while the world will still tolerate her being successful, because she's about to hit 30 and she won't be allowed to be successful after 35.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2020 17:21

She's seen enough of her fellow women singers careers fade to believe she has a limited shelf life.

I can see her having a longer career than she anticipates though, she will transfer from pop back to her more guitar based roots in a few years, I think.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2020 17:29

Pop is a very shortlived genre

Little Mix for example are doing really well to be on their sixth album

I don't think any of their UK girlband predecessors lasted as long

It is more like One Direction huge for a few years and gone.

RuffleCrow · 08/02/2020 18:33

I'm not sure that's true. Beyonce is my age (38) and still going strong. Kim Kardashian is my age and without any discernable talent and still as popular as ever.

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 08/02/2020 19:00

I would argue Beyonce is the exception that proves the rule!

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 19:58

Ruffle “ and one of her recent releases was just a straightup rip-off of MIA's Paper Planes”

which one please?

She credited Right Said Fred and they get royalties.

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 19:59

I think she might just want to duck out when she’s 35 and do production etc

RuffleCrow · 08/02/2020 20:28

You Need to Calm Down @autumnrose1

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/02/2020 20:28

I think she was referring to You Need to Calm Down? Different tune, different beat though. Can't say it reminded me of it myself but it's probably the closest.

I don't get her songs being described as dull either ( but I do love her), simply because she has covered so many musical genres and sounds. It's not like she sticks to the same thing.

She signed a new songwriting contract this week, do I'd say she might write for others when she slows down on making her own music. She already does write for others though.

As much as Beyonce is still popular, her fame/popularity has waned a bit. The biggest female names in music do come and go. Right now it's Billie Eilish, but will that be the case in 3 years? Probably not.

Nope, not hearing it all

Mauve similarities between Out of the Woods and Don’t Take The Money, but obvs that because she and Jack work together.

RuffleCrow · 08/02/2020 20:45

The verse is exactly the same rhythm and intonation and practically the same tune as the chorus in Paper Planes - she even apes MIA's style of singing and garish style in the video Hmm . A truly talented artist would a)notice and change it or b) own it and be honest. I guess her fans will hear what they want to hear. I don't dislike her, but this does lower her in my estimation.

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 20:52

Oh I’ve not seen the video

I’m just in from afternoon cocktails so I need to lie down 😂 or maybe pas out
I’ll watch it later

Didn’t like the mia song at all

Oh I should say, i heard about 10 seconds of the Swift Xmas song and couldnt bear more, I’m not one of these fans who is that devoted!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/02/2020 21:10

The Christmas song was NOT good. I liked the intro but the rest was just so cheesy.

Paper planes probably has a similar vibe, but I don't hear it as being the same. Google tells me others have done though. Meh.

Don't see similarities in the videos either really. Completely different colour scheme. Style of clothing, maybe, but it's not exactly a ball gown kinda song.

OP posts:
AngeloMysterioso · 09/02/2020 01:21

Ahh, Christmas songs are meant to be cheesy!

Can’t say I can see any similarity between YNTCD and Paper Planes, but I’m amazed nobody made her hand over a songwriting credit and/or a big ol’ chunk of the royalties for Blank Space to whoever wrote Bleeding Love...

AutumnRose1 · 09/02/2020 01:45

I have slept off my afternoon cocktails 😂

Im just thinking, if she’s happy to give royalties to Right Said Fred, she’d do it for others? Would any of you have spotted Right Said Fred?

Sunshineand · 09/02/2020 02:06

I love Taylor too! She's so talented and gorgeous. I didn't know about this documentary so will have a watch. Thank you!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 09/02/2020 09:17

@Sunshineand She is gorgeous, but she spends most of the documentary looking scruffy, which just makes me like her more. 1989 Taylor probably wouldn't have done that.

OP posts:
Playdoughbum · 09/02/2020 09:27

I loved seeing her writing songs. She gets so excited-and I couldn’t believe how quickly she does it. I am a fan anyway but enjoyed the documentary a lot. She’s had to do a lot of growing up under intense scrutiny and if she makes a mistake she gets tons of crap for it.
And yes she’s amazing live.

AutumnRose1 · 09/02/2020 11:36

I love watching her put songs together too

and I can't figure out when she takes a breath a lot of the time!

(I'm murdering Miss Americana as I type).

NeverTalksToStrangers · 09/02/2020 14:06

@AutumnRose1 omg me too. I love singing and have a decent voice, but I cannot sing her songs. Wrong key for me or something. I find Adele/Christina/whoever easier. Nuts really as Taylor is not the best singer in the world by a long stretch.

OP posts:
ChickLitLover · 09/02/2020 23:13

I think her songs are on the dull side of good, and one of her recent releases was just a straightup rip-off of MIA's Paper Planes. (Did she even give her writing credit?!)

But MIAs song sampled The Clash, Straight to Hell and a few other songs.

Cuddling57 · 10/02/2020 19:58

I've just watched this and came on mumsnet to find a thread Grin!
I've never been a fan, didn't know anything about her.
I really enjoyed it.
YY to the comment above that she looked messy most of the video and you love her for it.
KWest - what a nasty man.
I think the thing that shone through for me was her mother. The support she must have given her daughter her entire life was shown well when Taylor wanted to go public with her political beliefs which she supported, and then when the politician lost the vote her comment 'they'll be another vote in two years' - what a wonderful mum. It's sad to hear she is ill.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/02/2020 20:10

The song on her new album about her Mum being ill is so poignant

NeverTalksToStrangers · 10/02/2020 21:55

Both her parents seem lovely, but especially her mum. Has anyone seen the video her mum gave to chat show of Taylor high on painkillers post surgery? Very funny.
