Miss Americana (the Taylor Swift documentary)... anyone watch it?

NeverTalksToStrangers · 07/02/2020 19:32

Has anyone else seen this on Netflix?

It's really good. She's fascinating, yet totally normal. And, despite the fact that she has been very fortunate to be extremely successful (100% due to her natural songwriting talent though), she has also had a disproportionate amount of mud flung her way in the past 14 years. She's definitely made mistakes though (probably in my eyes her biggest mistakes have been certain single releases though).

I'll own up and admit that I love her, and I think most people would feel the same if they actually listened to her music or looked past the headlines.

Some very interesting topics covered in it. Politics, sexual assault, eating disorder etc.

I loved it! I thought it was raw and honest and just made me like her even more.

What she said about being expected to constantly reinvent herself but only in a way that people approve of/accept.

They like hearing her breakup songs but often slut-shame her. She's too public, she's too private etc etc

She seems to have found a way to be happy on her terms which great. Apparently her mum is really poorly and now has a brain tumour though.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 07/02/2020 21:33

Hadn't heard it was a brain tumour but I did know her cancer was back. She seems to be so lovely and grounded and very much Taylor's rock.

I think the whole thing in 2016 was just so unfair. She may well have lied about the existence of the phone call and possibly about everything that was discussed during it but the facts remain that Kanye wrote horrible, misogynistic, untrue lyrics about her. His stunt at the MTV awards was bad enough but here he was minimising her to a piece of meat and taking credit for her success. Instead of being offended by lyrics implying that her husband was up for shagging someone else, Kim was then complicit in taping the phone call and trying to trap, trick and humiliate her.

Even if he did discuss all the lyrics with her, her response didn't sound genuinely delighted. Probably one of those situations where you're thinking "what a fucking prick" but saying something else. The haters/media etc were so quick to vilify her over the whole thing. "Playing the victim" etc etc. She was the victim!!! Phonecall or not.

I still get surprised by quite how private her relationship with Joe continues to be. Are they going to get married/already married and just never going to mention it? 3 kids later and not a peep? Just the 2 albums about their love then. Grin

I started a thread on the feminism page. I really enjoyed it and felt it touched on so many important issues. I am going to get DD to watch it with me over the weekend.

PrivateSpidey · 07/02/2020 21:58

I saw the trailer on Netflix the other night - am looking forward to watching when I get the TV to myself! I love her. As you said OP, she is genuinely talented.

Lover is one of my favourite albums ever.

chickedeee · 07/02/2020 22:10

I thought it was excellent!

She has been treated so badly by the press and other celebs- horrid.

I thought she has done a lot of reflecting- therapy perhaps- to come to terms with how she has been treated.

Loved the ending when she apologised 'for buying the house she is living in, from the songs she had made' fantastic!!!

So good for younger girls and women especially the getting in to politics

Go Taylor Grin

ChickLitLover · 07/02/2020 22:28

I love Taylor, I think she’s a very good role model for young girls and she seems genuinely lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary, she’s dealt with lots of crap in a very male dominated industry.

She seems happy now. Very sad about her mum.

bigreputation · 07/02/2020 22:30

She's amazing live too. If you like her music and get the chance to see her, go. Her last tour was incredible.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 07/02/2020 22:52

I went to the Reputation tour with dh in Dublin on the Friday night and loved it so much I went back again the next night with my niece and DS1 (9 at the time). My 8 year old ds2 loves her now. He would love to see her but the festival format of Lover dates wouldn't be right for young kids I don't think. Plus I still haven't seen any Irish dates?

DD1 is not home which is why I didn't know it was out. Will watch when I have the TV to myself one night. I love her but only because DD got into her at the age of 14. I've been to Red and Reputation tours and DD is seeing her in Portugal this year. She has had to put up with a fair amount of mud slinging though.

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 00:44

Ah, I’m not someone who reads much about this but the Kanye thing sounds awful.

I expect she wants to protect her partner from all the crazy.

I have major anxiety in crowds or I’d have gone to see 1989 or Reputation. I’d need to ha e at least three very hard to get tranqilisers! So I rejected the idea but when I look at the live footage I do wonder I should try.

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 00:45

*if

Sorry, v tired.

OrangeLindt · 08/02/2020 00:53

I have just finished watching it and it was very clear just how much Kanye West knocked her confidence on stage aged 17 when she won the best video award. I felt sorry for her, I have never seen the raw emotional side of her until I watched this, I love her.

JustMyName · 08/02/2020 00:53

I watched it and loved it. I'm a massive fan of her music, but respect her and think she's a great role model for young women and teens. I worried at first when my dd became a bit obsessed with her, that she's thin, beautiful, but she's not like that and she talks about important things. She came across as humble, hard working and very appreciative of her fans. She writes her songs, plays instruments and can really sing with no technology involved.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/02/2020 00:59

Her boyfriend is an up-and-coming English actor called Joe Alwyn. Minor roles in The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots, so not un-famous exactly. They have exactly the same shade of hair. Grin She's been to the Oscar's etc with him but never walks the red carpet. And he doesn't do either for music award shows.

Have you watched the Reputation tour on Netflix? It's genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen. All from the comfort of your own living room.

I didn't get to see 1989...
The tickets went on sale about 6 weeks before my birthday.

DH, thinking he was being good asked me a week or so later..
"Do you want Ed Sheeran tickets for your birthday?"

"Er, no.... I WANTED to see Taylor swift".
I'm such a brat. I expect him to read my mind all the time. GrinBlush By that stage they were totally sold out and eye wateringly expensive as she was the biggest star in the world.

He was super prepared before the Reputation tickets came out though! Wink

Huge fan of Taylor went to the reputation tour. Only became a fan really over her last 3 albums all of which are brilliant pop records.

Had seen only a limited amount of footage of Kanye crashing the stage before.

How awful that she stood alone like that lost for words for a full two mins whilst people booed and she assumed it was against her and her only 17!

Awful. Why on Earth did no-one come to her aid?

AutumnRose1 · 08/02/2020 01:26

I’ve never seen the footage of her leaving the stage, only of him crashing it

I suppose the organiser wouldn’t have a clue what to do because they’d not know that Taylor didn’t know the booing wasn’t for her, they might have been waiting for her to speak...was it a full two minutes?

I realise Beyoncé couldn’t help her immediate reaction but what a pity she looked so pleased.

I’m not big on country music so was late to Taylor but I do love Our Song and probably a few others that are considered country.

celebgoss101 · 08/02/2020 02:38

My sister called me and told me I had to watch it and did I know Taylor was only 17. Crazy.

That interviewer that said she would be going home with a man tonight. Puke

I think it's good she has an English guy. London is a way easier place to just be you. As she says in London Boy, she can go to the pub and watch rugby with his mates.

She is so talented and has very good understanding of the process she has gone through to stop worrying all the time about being lik d by everyone.

Even if he did discuss all the lyrics with her, her response didn't sound genuinely delighted.

I remember when I first heard it, before I knew much about the history between them or about her.
She came across strongly as a woman just trying to get through a conversation with a narcissist without doing anything he'd view as provocation or justification for escalating the situation.
She was very polite, vague and noncommittal.
If she'd told him no outright, I suspect the lyrics and video he made referencing her would have been even nastier.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/02/2020 10:53

Woops. Finger went nuts there.

She was 19 (not 17, but still bloody young) when the MTV thing happened. The documentary does show this. The commentator got it wrong, but his point was right. He wouldn't have done it to a more established, older or male artist.

Taylor Lautner was standing behind her i think (he was one of the presenters) and I think they may have been dating at the time (it was around then anyway). I think they were all just stunned.

She had to perform afterwards but was crying backstage. Beyonce too. Bey wanted to leave but they promised if she won best video (as opposed to best female video Confused) she could share the stage with Taylor, which she did. I actually think Kanye was right in that Beyonce's video was better... it's just what he did was so wrong. He had been seen on the red carpet with a bottle of Hennessy.

Country albums wise, I love Dear John, Mean, Back to December, dark horse, story of us.

@AutumnRose1 I can understand that anxiety but honestly stadium gigs aren't that crowded. Yes it's a huge venue with thousands of people but it's so well managed that I never felt anxious. I was a bit overwhelmed when I saw the size of the venue but soon forgot about it.

RuffleCrow · 08/02/2020 15:08

I think her songs are on the dull side of good, and one of her recent releases was just a straightup rip-off of MIA's Paper Planes. (Did she even give her writing credit?!)

However there are far more boring artists out there so i'll give the doc a look.
