Looloo

Spoiler

There were clues. The Dad telling the son ‘mum doesn’t know if it’s new year or New York, don’t worry’ - except she does know, everything. Mum thanking her brother(?) for paying for her car to be fixed and she says thanks ‘you do anything for your family, don’t you’ - the car had been used in the hit and run and that was her doing whatever it took to help her son (though you didn’t know it at the time). I liked it, it was more subtle than usual.

Bluewavescrashing · 18/02/2020 10:49

Ignoring the spoilers as I haven't seen it yet... Kids were meant to be going out with DH this morning so I could watch it but DD is hanging around. I can't watch it at night!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/02/2020 10:55

Amfeeling
Oh Please say he was lovely!

AutumnRose1 · 18/02/2020 13:36

Have to watch last nights when I get home.

I met Mark Gatiss and managed not to gush. It was lucky because his dog came up to me in the pub so it was a more natural thing than stopping him and saying “love your work”.

A colleague met him at the bus stop and was a totally waffly full on mad fan....he looked really embarrassed telling us 😂

CaptainHammer · 18/02/2020 15:36

I liked it, much more subtle than some. Like last weeks episode though it’s not one I’d rush to rewatch.

I guessed the hit and run was one of the family, but thought maybe the dad, hadn't realised the clues to it being the mum (Anna from Corrie!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/02/2020 17:54

Def subtle. Got it at the end when ssid last tue hit and run

Tho sad the dad was beaten up by son and not a work colleague

AutumnRose1 · 18/02/2020 21:07

Just caught up

Very clever

Though I too was sad about the lad beating up his dad, and what his dad said was so understanding. Beautiful and moving.

The writing's exceptional, as always. The third episode made me realise just how little I see genuine representations of ordinary people's lives.

And that's the thing with them. Even when they write very surreal stuff, like League or Psychoville, it's somehow so realistic at the same time. I know people like the characters they write; they are so familiar in a way. The observation is extraordinary.

That third episode really struck a chord with me. I know people in that situation with an adult son or daughter with a serious drug addiction, looking after a grandchild, and yes, the episode nailed just how they deal with it - - that slow tragedy of it all, while pretending it's not quite as bad as it is because if they were honest, they'd fall apart.

PointlessAddict · 18/02/2020 22:42

I liked it last night.

Favourite episode - the 12 days of Christine

GlennBulb · 19/02/2020 15:48

I'm so jealous people meeting Mark Gatiss!
My username is a Mark Gatiss character! I love him!

Bluewavescrashing · 19/02/2020 18:55

The nuance of character reminds me a little if the Royle Family. You feel like you've known them forever. Even more impressive considering how short the episodes are!

I finally plucked up the courage to watch Dead Line today, in daylight. Reece was commenting how the programme isn't Black Mirror - not so subtle but fair play!

CaptainHammer · 19/02/2020 19:38

@GlennBulb I love Nighty Night!

@Bluewavescrashing I agree, excellent writing in both programmes to get so much in to so little time.

Thanks to this thread for spelling out this week's twist - we were slow on the uptake this time.
Superb 'kitchen sink' drama and quite moving.

I've been rewatching some of the older episodes. I normally love a dark horror tale, but Nana's Party (s2) is just exquisite.

The performances are brilliant, especially Lorraine Ashbourne, who I love watching in everything she does.

WhatKatyDidNot · 20/02/2020 17:04

The third episode made me realise just how little I see genuine representations of ordinary people's lives.

Exactly the same thing struck me. The dialogue in this episode was fantastic. Accurate, kitchen sink stuff. I loved it that the twist was subtle because it put that aspect right in the foreground.

Arthritica · 20/02/2020 17:20

The scene with the homemade dress was so painful to watch.

I was dying for both of them. The love, the work. But the naffness of a homemade dress in cheap fabric at your prom. Loved both mother and daughter and felt for them.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 20/02/2020 17:30

Beautiful post Packing and so true. You see a few shows where it’s so clearly “This Character is Working Class and Therefore Relatable” but very few are actually true to life or believable.

iklboo · 20/02/2020 17:36

I SPOTTED THE HARE!!!! Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/02/2020 17:39

The child actor was very good, sounded natural not speaking lines. I wondered if bits like making the mince pies and talking about how he made the Christmas card were improvised.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 20/02/2020 18:57

Captain They said on the podcast that lots of it was improvised and how good the wee boy was. The grandmas drawers bit was improvised and they sat at the table playing loss of games.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/02/2020 18:58

Thanks, it showed. It was very true to life.

AutumnRose1 · 20/02/2020 20:11

Did anyone see that a guy tweeted at Reece to say the episode was a failure because the twist wasn’t obvious enough? 😂

WhatKatyDidNot · 20/02/2020 22:43

The grandma's drawers bit reminded me of that scene in The Royle Family when they're all watching Antiques Roadshow and Ricky Tomlinson bangs his pound coin on the table for the family sweepstake!

AutumnRose1 · 23/02/2020 19:24

Tomorrow’s looks brilliant and I can’t see it till Tuesday. Plops.

Same will probably apply to the next two!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 24/02/2020 22:36

Argh, that was so unbearably clever! I wasn't enormously keen on last week's episode, I could see it was different and they were trying to be more subtle, but it was just a bit meh for me. This week was terrific. Reece's character was so smug, thinking he'd outwitted the younger man, and when he realised what had happened it was just perfect.
