Anyone watching? I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.

I had to leave it half way through episode 2 last night when a weird CG creature with big ears appeared.
“the new Game is Throne” it ain’t.
Might try again though as I liked what’s his face’s gravelly voice and his nice horse.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/12/2019 17:46

Oooh yes. I absolutely love the video game and Henry Cavill makes the most amazing Geralt. Incredibly hot Wink i also think the actor playing yennefer is fab, id never heard of her before. I've binged three episodes, hoping to watch some more tonight. Loved seeing myanna buring too, she was a welcome surprise. she's unbelievably beautiful and a great actress.

kittlesticks · 21/12/2019 17:50

We've watched episode one, will stick it out, seems quite 'fun' but it's no GOT! Just something to watch in the run up to Xmas with a sherry.

BarbedBloom · 21/12/2019 18:15

I am loving it. I like the books and game too

magicstar1 · 21/12/2019 18:26

I was a bit bored by the first episode but stuck with it, and ended up watching 4 last night. It’s pretty good.
They don’t want to be compared to GOT, and even had notes on casting saying “No GOT actors wanted” (even though a couple got in lol )

Jodri · 21/12/2019 18:35

As fantasy is one of our favourite genres, we watched first two episodes last night. We are hooked! Trying to refrain from binge watching them all in a over.

CrowleysBentley · 21/12/2019 20:05

I've watched 4 episodes, and I'm really enjoying it, it's definitely more "fun" than Game of Thrones, not taking itself as seriously. Really liking long haired, leather clad Henry Cavill too, much more interesting than squeaky clean dull superman Henry Cavill.

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 21/12/2019 20:18

It gets better with each episode I think! I'm on episode 5 and it's coming into its own now

I really don't like game of thrones and soon far i don't think it's particularly similar. There's a fraction of the number of characters for a start with makes it a lot more concise and easy to follow.

kittlesticks · 22/12/2019 07:10

Watched episode two yesterday. Can't binge on it as I have recently had DD and my bed is calling by about 8pm! Anyway really enjoying it now, like the way it seems to be taking the piss out of itself a bit, and think the woman playing Yennefer is brilliant.

Pinkbonbon · 22/12/2019 07:14

I don't know if I like it or not. I like the scary monster fights but...

I'm a little lost on the story and none of the characters are particularly likeable. It feels a bit over complicated and disjointed. But I'm only three episodes in so maybe it'll come together better.

I'll need to go back and replay the game and try refresh my memory.

Floralmoral · 22/12/2019 09:02

I watched all in one go. I love love love both the books and the game.
I agree with pp who says it was disjointed. They butchered the timeline, within one episode we have jumps between 10 years earlier, 10 years later and nothing to offer any clarification what’s going on.
It doesn’t replace GoT.
The witcher himself- I’m very fond of Grin
Not keen on Yennefer. She is undoubtedly gorgeous and a good actress but I had a solid picture of her in my head, based on how she’s described in the books, and this ain’t her, I tell ya!
Netflix obviously has a fair bit of cash to pay for decent special effects, fight scenes are imo much better than in GoT, overall, I enjoyed it.
When’s the next season coming out?Grin

User67836 · 22/12/2019 09:18

I didn’t know it was a game, I’ve watched 3 and don’t really know what’s going on!

Aliensrus · 22/12/2019 09:24

Binge watched 3 episodes last night too, love it but I find the timeline very confusing! Had to google it in the end to make sense of it.
I didn’t get on with first book but might dig it out again now.

Arthritica · 22/12/2019 09:24

Henry Cavill’s a good looking fella but he’s got the personal charisma of a house brick.

RamonaFlower · 22/12/2019 09:28

Watched it all. All I've seen are rave reviews about how good it is and how Netflix have chucked money at the production but it still has the air of something like Xena, Warrior Princess for me. It's nowhere near the production value of GoT, even though I assume The Witcher has had a bigger budget for this first season (might be wrong). Also the timeline is all over the place which made it a bit hard to follow.

I enjoyed it though. Henry Cavill is good. Haven't read the books or played the game so it had nothing to live up to for me.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/12/2019 10:06

Geralt isn't meant to be charismatic.

covetingthepreciousthings · 22/12/2019 17:00

Watched the first episode (DH big gamer so he was excited to watch), but I just really struggled. I haven't played the game, nor read the books.. just felt like there was no explanations for anything at all. It seems like they're just counting on the ones who watch it to already know.

I just wish there'd been a bit more explaining about characters etc to set the scene.

Anyone else struggle?

Lefkosia · 22/12/2019 17:06

I loved the game but I've had to stop watching this. It seems low budget but it's clearly not which is very strange and I dont like or care about any of the characters.

Kiki275 · 22/12/2019 22:38

Just watched Episode 4 and I'm hooked!
@covetingthepreciousthings Ep4 explains a lot, but you'll have to bear with the continual shifts along the timeline.x

Jodri · 23/12/2019 11:05

I’m fine with no explanations: in fact I quite like it that way. I really enjoyed HBO watchmen on now tv and that has plenty of wtf moments, but was well worth it and quite satisfying in the end.
Still loving The Witcher and the slow reveals; I’ve just watched episode 3 and realised there are different timelines going onConfused

NotAClue101 · 23/12/2019 11:42

We binged it all.
Liked it, as very much my kinda thing.
Found it hard to know what was going on at times and not well explained, and jumped back and forth a bit! By the last two episodes, things made a little more sense than when half way through.
Needs to explain things better/timelines/characters etc for the audience to fully love it I think.

BeardedVulture · 23/12/2019 11:55

I’m finding it incredibly hard to follow. Have watched the first 3 episodes, have not read the books or played the games. DH has played the games and is just as confused as I am.

I know the show doesn’t want to be compared to GoT but people are going to do that so....

  1. Game of Thrones made a real effort at world building. You had a map in the intro sequence to help you understand the geography of Westeros and which faction lived where. There were also clear distinctions between the cultures of the different regions which were easy to pick up on- clothes, religion, architecture, house sigils etc. The Witcher seems to have eleventy billion kingdoms, kings, princesses that all have the same drab medieval look, with new ones seemingly introduced and discarded in each episode, and none of them are very interesting.
  2. There’s been no clear explanation of what the crack is with the magical academy- who are they, how do they relate to the different kingdoms? Who is that dude in the basement full of skulls?
  3. What is going on with the timelines? In the 3rd episode there is the magic school’s graduation ball thingy and there are child characters there who are adults in Geralt’s timeline? Is some stuff happening in the past and some happening in the present, because if so it has not been clearly telegraphed.

I badly want to like this show as I love fantasy but it is really failing on the storytelling side of things.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 23/12/2019 17:03

I enjoyed the first episode, the queen, the battle, all that but found episode two rather dull and hard going. Should I persevere?

ScribblyGum · 23/12/2019 17:11

Completely agree with you @BeardedVulture. I’m sticking with it mostly because dh is enjoying it and it’s nice to watch something together in the evenings with the port and cheese.
Not got a scooby doo what’s going on. We only realised there were time jumps at around episode 4. No clue about all the kingdoms, who is ruling what, the magic system.
The production feels so like that of Merlin, just need a dodgy talking dragon now.
