BBC drama starts 29th December 9pm

Yeah I know I'm early with this thread, but I can't wait.
I know nothing about this other than the brief articles I've read but it just looks like my kind of drama.

I’ve always been fascinated by the whole thing and read MRD memoirs.
Anyway this is hugely detailed and a long read but might interest anyone who wants to know more. Ward although sleazy is, I think an intriguing man. Very talented as an artist, we’ll educated and was obviously charismatic

I didn't know Stephen was gay. Bisexual yes

Bluerussian · 01/01/2020 17:02

I've not heard that, IcedPurple, or may have missed it. I suppose he could have done, gay people do have the odd hetero fling. Maybe we'll find out in the last episode on Sunday.

southeastdweller · 01/01/2020 17:05

There's four more episodes to go.

The80sweregreat · 01/01/2020 17:36

The acting is very good but the overuse of ' little baby' is jarring. The one playing Christine is beautiful.
I was sort of aware of the back story and I've seen the film scandal (but a long time ago! )

I'm amazed that Ward wasn't more upset that she defied him and went to the press but maybe he thought that the public wouldn't believe it all or something? Thought it might blow over?
I can see how a young girl with such a hard upbringing could get caught up in all this. It comes across that Ward actually liked her and treated her well so she did trust him , at first anyway. He was worldly wise and she wasn't. She ended up in poverty in later life I believe and that was sad but people always blame the women regardless of the actual facts. Notice the language ' call girl , good time girl '. I can imagine lots of women were quick to put her down as well as the men.
The next one is on Sunday.

Goawayquickly · 01/01/2020 18:33

I don't think ward was gay. More a voyeur than a participant in sex. I think he loved intrigue and seedy glamour. Quite a fascinating man in many ways. Manipulative perhaps but I think he cared for christine in his way.

ageingdisgracefully · 01/01/2020 18:41

Another one who thought Ward was gay!

Found this interesting includes Russian spy:

Christine's son has just been interviewed on Good Morning Britain. It'll be on ITV +1 in 50 minutes. He was very nice and has her eyes.

Elderflower14 · 02/01/2020 08:03

Ive set my sky box on plus one... Thank you!
I've ordered David Profumo's memoirs
Will be interesting to see it from his point of view...

diddl · 02/01/2020 09:22

That video is quite interesting.

Almost felt sorry for Ward!

kennypppppppp · 02/01/2020 19:44

I also thought the film was amazing and john hurt was fabulous in it. I started watching the tv version but james Norton (ooooh tommy lee Royce!! when are you coming back!?!?!?) made my teeth itch every time he called ck (Christine keeler, not calvin klein) "little baby".

thought it was fairly rubbishy tbh.

IcedPurple · 02/01/2020 19:54

A drinking game for next Sunday evening: Every time James Norton says 'little baby' we down a shot of whatever our fave tipple is.

Or maybe not such a good idea for those who have to work the next day, since we'll all be on the floor by 10 pm.

Housewife2010 · 02/01/2020 20:03

Good idea. It will be a good way to finish off the Christmas Bailey's.

southeastdweller · 02/01/2020 20:13

I'm another fan of the film. It's quite hard to find on DVD these days but it's on YouTube:

BodenGate · 02/01/2020 21:45

Drinking game idea is a good one! I’m in!

upaladderagain · 02/01/2020 22:39

Me too, but it's down to Sainsbo's as there's only a dribble of the Irish left.

PandancerandRabbitoplh · 03/01/2020 23:36

Thanks for youtube video, enjoyed watching the film.

Another really good episode!

Is it really possible for someone, even a young woman on the margins of society, to be so absolutely ignorant about MPs etc.? Even if only from seeing newspaper headlines or tv news.

On one level CK is shown to be quite sharp and then the next moment like some total air head?

Does her mother think she is innocent and just somehow ended up as witness to a shooting and a government scandal or ... ?

NewName73 · 06/01/2020 08:06

I'm really confused about the offer to pay her off ...

I thought Profumo agreed to pay her £5,000, so why did they only hand over a cheque for £500? Was it really a misunderstanding?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 06/01/2020 08:21

I think her agent bloke just said "five" over the phone and the confusion arose over that. As was pointed out, Profumo could have afforded 5k so it seemed foolish of him to not do it. His arrogance that he could deny everything and people would believe him over Christine, who he saw as a silly little tart, probably had a lot to do with it.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 06/01/2020 08:32

I think Christine is demonstrating the difference between stupidity and ignorance. She's obviously quite sharp and perhaps fancies herself to be worldly, but she doesn't know anything about how the upper echelons of society operate.

Presumably she isn't interested in politics so she doesn't bother to read about it - surely that's easy enough to believe. I know people who don't know or care about current affairs and don't keep up with what's going on in Parliament, and that's with access to 24 news and the internet.
