A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.)

Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Before We Get Married (Viki - Taiwanese)
Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Netflix - Chinese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oh that is awful news!

Bea · 03/12/2019 19:37

Boatyard ... Don't have a recipe... I just "bang it all together" as my mum says! 😳😱... But loosely... It's... 2 tablespoons of very finely minced/ chopped up peeled root ginger... If you've got a microplane grater 👍👍... Put in heatproof bowl... A pinch of salt... A smaller pinch of sugar... 3 spring onions finely sliced... Then... Here's the part which give Dh the heeby jeebies!... Heat up about 3 to 4 tablespoons of rapeseed oil (veg oil will do but rapeseed has higher burning point without spoiling!) to as hot as you dare... And pour over the ginger /spring onion mix... It should make a very satisfying sizzle!!...
I roast a chicken and dip pieces of the chicken in... Hmmm! Or just go whole hog and put a spoon of it into my rice and mix up! Sounds odd.. But it's comfort food in this house!.. 😂

Bea · 03/12/2019 19:40

Oooo! Just found a proper recipe
pupswithchopsticks.com/ginger-scallion-sauce/
Feel quite pleased that I've basically got it right! 😂👍

Bea · 03/12/2019 19:41

😔😔... I spotted that sad news too!

helloswellow · 03/12/2019 20:05

It was just a double post boatyard I'm not being inflammatory, don't worry.

I saw the news about Cha In Ha. Did they confirm it was suicide? Last I read it was just he was found dead by his manager, although at his age, heart attacks and other spontaneous death would be unlikely.

boatyardblues · 03/12/2019 21:48

Phew! Setting aside the PSJ/Secretary Kim stand-off, it’s so cordial in here that a deletion for bad words/deeds seemed out of place.

I misrepresented the Cha In Ha article, it does only say found dead - no cause was given. Sad for his loved ones though.

I will record here my appreciation of Danho’s chiselled cheekbones, poise and elegant fight scenes. Jang Dong-Yoon is not carrying the visuals in Nokdu single-handed.

bettys · 03/12/2019 22:40

Yes he is such a gorgeous baddie it makes you a little conflicted

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 03/12/2019 23:46

I'm concerned I won't have time to finish Fellow Citizens or Running Mates; Human Rights if I start watching Nokdu in time for scores at the end of the year.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 03/12/2019 23:46

But you are all making it sound so tempting!

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 03/12/2019 23:49

I'm hoping I'll have more time for K-drama when the election is over, but I'm enjoying the election shenanigans in Fellow Citizens

boatyardblues · 04/12/2019 06:09

I liked the Korean approach to giving each candidate in a seat/ward a number and them rocking the numbered tabards at the hustings. I felt very sorry for the FL Campaigning for Siwon at the street food market & having to eat whatever she was offered (penis fish! Actually a lug worm, usually eaten raw. 🤮).

OP posts:
helloswellow · 04/12/2019 07:14

I couldn't do it! No matter how much I wanted him elected, I wouldn't eat strange penis fish.

boatyardblues · 04/12/2019 08:12

Damn, I’m up to ep 26 of Nokdu, so rapidly approaching the finale. I need something lovely lined up for after. I will check the spreadsheet later and come back for views on options.

bettys · 04/12/2019 09:50

I can recommend Pretty Proofreader. Bit of a shift but only 11 episodes so will fill in until Triad Princess comes out

helloswellow · 04/12/2019 10:21

I keep getting distracted by the on screen graphics of Pretty Proofreader but it moves along well.

Bea · 04/12/2019 10:57

Yes! Pretty Proofreader... Very easy! And pleasant!!

AesopsMables · 04/12/2019 17:25

I had an hour last night to watch HPL one solitary hour between 6:30 & 7:30pm. The exact time the WiFi started to go down and stay down for 3hrs 🤨
I had old download of Chicago Typewriter on my iPad so resorted to that.
I'm now invested in both,at the same time, whilst looking forward to Nokdu also! Guess my December viewing is all sorted 🤣

helloswellow · 04/12/2019 18:39

Aesops That sounds like a great set of dramas to watch though. You'll never get bored because you can swap to a completely different style of drama.

Ive plowed through Pretty Proofreader and now need more filler before Triad Princess. Off to the spreadsheet for more recommendations.

boatyardblues · 04/12/2019 22:40

I am still on Nokdu. There’s a scene just now where it occurred to me that cruel, haughty Danho could have cut it in the widow village, if only he’d smile a bit more. He’s very elegant and willowy. Perhaps his Adam’s apple is too prominent. 🤷‍♂️

OP posts:
helloswellow · 05/12/2019 07:14

If only they had turtlenecks in widow village. Then he could've joined them and it would've ended a lot quicker.

boatyardblues · 05/12/2019 08:41

I got about 10 min into ep 31 this morning. Go widows! I’m half dying to finish it and half gutted.

OP posts:
helloswellow · 05/12/2019 09:17

I think Nokdu might be my most surprising drama of the year. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did.

boatyardblues · 05/12/2019 09:25

A lot of it is down to the leads being so adorable together. I like the “sisters doing it for themselves” aspects with the widow village and the lady assassins. For a Korean production it feels quite feminist, in that there are women in leadership roles, strong, cunning etc but also Nokdu has his eyes opened to the suffering of marginalised women, especially the widows and gisaeng. Dong Joo is reassuringly self-sacrificing so it doesn’t frighten the horses, mind.

OP posts:
helloswellow · 05/12/2019 10:04

I was struggling to explain it without just saying well written women too many times but you managed to summarise it so well.
