Some of us can't binge watch as we don't live in the UK and can't get the player.

@unique1986 Could you perhaps request that MNHQ add 'NO SPOILERS' to the thread title?

Report
LilyMumsnet · 15/11/2019 21:18

Hi folks,

As there's a current spoiler thread and we've been removing spoilers from this one, we've edited the title to add a no spoiler warning.

If you see any, let us know!

I've watched episodes 3 and 4 tonight and am desperate to know what happens but can't watch anymore as I need to go to sleep!

Apologies folks, apparently I posted a spoiler, which MNHQ has kindly deleted. It was genuinely accidental Blush

I thought Marsha looked of age with the character Julia and they commented about the kids being the same age implying there were similar ages themselves I think.

The smirk in the last scene did me think.

springydaff · 15/11/2019 23:11

I'll be reading the spoiler thread because, after 2 EPs, I am so irritated I can't be bothered you watch it.

Julia is just so dumb, even for someone who is smashed up by her odious ex's relationship with her ex bf. There is such malevolence here it's depressing. Which is a shame because it's well shot. I also don't think Julia looks like a millionaire, she looks like her clothes are from New Look - except at the introduction dinner where she was, at last, looking good and at least a little well groomed. There is ZERO chemistry between the two! Not a drop of sexual tension despite the usual grappling against doors.

I find it totally unbelievable - who wrote it? A man?

Report

I think Marsha looks younger but is always dressed for a party in the tropics. What's with the constant sleeveless slinky stuff? It looks silly when everyone else is in jumpers.

It was written by Marnie Dickens (female). Who wrote 13 (good!).

Marnie Dickens looks very young - about the same age as Jody Comer. It makes sense to me that she doesn't know how to write for an older woman - the Julia character is not fleshed out but a plot device.

She'd be better off writing about younger women.

For all of the train spotters you can get from Exeter to Paddington in just over two hours but the trains are rarely empty.

I thought it was ok. I've binge watched, buy probably would have given up if I'd have had to waited a week between episodes.

I just wouldn't have the energy for a younger man and I'm younger than she is meant to be. All that sex! No thanks.
I admire her stamina.

Report
lazymum99 · 16/11/2019 10:58

However 80s she’s got little else to do or think about. So has the extra stamina stored up. It’s not very deep is it. 60 and bedding a 30 year old must be very nerve wracking. Or maybe that’s just my thinking!

Springydaff, her wardrobe definitely had a touch of the Charlie Dimmocks.

Interesting that 55 year old Boris has a 32 year old girlfriend which doesn't seem to raise too many eyebrows. Certainly not as many as if the ages were reversed.

Look at the Macrons - she's about 66 and he's 42. Bet she gets more criticism than Boris does 🤷‍♀️

Report
The80sweregreat · 16/11/2019 13:29

The Macrons are quite interesting as she was one of his teachers I believe! They both look happy and been married for years so i guess it can work well. Richard Madeley used to go on about his age gap with Judy but that was only about ten years or something (?) not as huge the age gap in this drama.

The thing that would annoy me is the fact people would think he was my son , plus how much upkeep you need in order to stay young. Ok if you have money and time for treatments and gyms and have good bone Structure etc etc but most women I know havent aged that well really and I'm not being mean here! ; men , annoyingly, do age better and things like hair loss isn't as much as a disaster as it can be for a woman who loses her hair for whatever reason ( for example) plus the menopause really can take a toll on us. Men get away with all that.
I would hate having to go to bed with someone that age as well. The pressure! Not for me although I can see why some women would love the attention of a younger man even if everyone else would judge you or be jealous.

Joanna Lumley has a much younger husband who is a successful conductor. Joan Collins is another who comes to mind, (with a 32 year gap), Barbara Windsor too. I think LIsa Bonet is about 13 years older than Jason Momoa ( so not so big a gap) and Deborah LeeFurness is older than Hugh Jackman.

I think I feel uncomfortable about the Brigitte Macron and Sam Taylor Wood age gaps as the guys were so young when they got together ( I would feel the same if the younger party had been girls). However, the marraiges have stayed the course. They obviously meet each others needs. Patrick Dempsey was married at a young age to his best friend's mum for about 10 years IIRC. I think Clark Gable was married to his first, much older drama teacher who supported him and paid for his false teeth and got training for his voice to go down a few pitches as it was very high originally but she was left when Hollywood called.

Good luck to all these women with young men on their arms! If it works and it's not creepy then live and let live . It Just wouldn't be my cup of tea although I'm an invisible fat fifty plus woman who didn't get much attention as a young woman let alone an older one! I would also want to ' mother' them I think and that's not cool at all! :)

I enjoyed e1

Those who know me , know I don’t binge so will be watching weekly

Sometimes I wish bbc didn’t put all episodes up after first one in iPlayer

Thanks you mnhq for no spoilers

Was a bit confused with timescale

Assumed she married him a year later at end of e1

But guess e 2 will reveal more

And yes why is it fine for the dad to have young gf but not fine for mum to have young bf

Caravanholidayfun · 16/11/2019 15:13

@Blondeshavemorefun because it was mum they had the money in this particular situation

Mark Webber, the F1 driver has a much older wife.

I have huge crushes on younger guys, AJ Pritchard, Harry Styles, Sawn Mendes, but it really is fantasy land, In real life I'd run a mile, I'm a washed up 41 year old with a daughter closer to their age who has nothing to offer them, I just like to admire through my TV/going to gigs!Grin
