Is anyone watching? I'm fascinated.

I am. Really enjoying it. Such an interesting idea.

NCTDN · 22/10/2019 21:40

I'm guessing there is a translator and they have edited those parts out!

OP posts:
fleariddenmoggie · 22/10/2019 21:42

I haven’t seen it, but think the idea is offensive.

petalpower · 22/10/2019 21:43

I can’t imagine what it would be like to have an exact replica of your own home in such a contrasting location.

NCTDN · 22/10/2019 21:45

@fleariddenmoggie why offensive?

OP posts:
Manicpixiedreambitch · 22/10/2019 21:49

I didn’t like the look of the trailer. Interested to see what people say.

fleariddenmoggie · 22/10/2019 21:58

@NCTDN

The whole concept is inherently racist and exploitative

purpleme12 · 22/10/2019 22:03

I wondered that too NCDTN

purpleme12 · 22/10/2019 22:04

(about the translating I mean)

Soontobe60 · 22/10/2019 22:11

@fleariddenmoggie

Why is It Racist? I don't see anything offensive, quite the opposite. It's two diametrically opposed groups of people interacting. No doubt the tribe have benefitted financially in some way, but should they not get that opportunity in case someone else thinks it's exploiting them?

NCTDN · 22/10/2019 22:11

@fleariddenmoggie I don't think you can say that if you haven't watched it.

OP posts:
fleariddenmoggie · 22/10/2019 22:21

‘The British Tribe Next Door ....very concept plays into a colossal history of othering Africans. Prejudicial ideas about black people run deep in the European subconscious; I cannot count the number of times I’ve seen a script describing a place “unchanged by time or modernity“

..... what anthropologists call the “tits and spear complex”, where Britons gawp at bare-breasted nomadic Africans with spears and marvel at how “traditional” (for which, read primitive) they are.” [Afua Hirsh]

Soontobe60 · 22/10/2019 22:50

@fleariddenmoggie
So did you watch it, or are you judging it based solely on its title? Do you feel the same about programmes like Planet Earth which may focus on the lives of different cultures? How can we begin to understand the world if we don't get to see it?

Worrywart21 · 22/10/2019 22:53

It was interesting. I think it was a good experiment. Makes you think about our throw away culture and materialistic qualities.

I did wonder though, did that lady really never see her face? Surely you can look into the water and see a reflection. And walking up stairs. It just seems a bit.... dramatic?

converseandjeans · 22/10/2019 22:58

I found it weird but interesting. However I agree it did seem a bit racist - conforming to the stereotype some people have of Africa.

Tractorgirlz · 22/10/2019 23:01

I really enjoyed it! Such an eye opener. We are so lazy and materialistic in comparison.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 22/10/2019 23:01

I found it so interesting and the tribe have such a good sense of humour. They really seemed lovely

DJB1968Bar · 22/10/2019 23:04

I think it was really interesting and great to see how other people live and find our lives Smile can't wait to see the next part

confusednorthner · 22/10/2019 23:09

Loved the man who wanted to ask them if they'd leave him their house 😀

Review here from Guardian [[https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/oct/22/the-british-tribe-next-door-review-why-did-no-one-put-a-stop-to-this]].

Apart from the overtones of colonialism, I am Shock at the energy resource required to replicate the UK house, ship in water etc. It’s not really an authentic lived experience is it?

BikeRunSki · 22/10/2019 23:25

Better link

MrsJoshNavidi · 22/10/2019 23:28

I wasn't going to watch it because I thought it would be patronising, but it's fascinating!

SorrowfulMystery · 22/10/2019 23:31

I’m with @flearidden and Lucy Mangan. I can’t believe someone commissioned this in 2019.

Chipstick10 · 22/10/2019 23:51

Racist ? Oh perleeze. What claptrap. Finding offence for the sake of finding offence
