I agree about the dodgy cgi but when they were filming little dorritt where i worked there was a night scene in venice with gondolas and i swear it took a week to set up (a couple of gondolas on a mini train track and to dress the surrounding buildings) and film and even then they had to cgi in the water. It was on screen for about 5 seconds. I was Shock as i was looking forward to seeing it on screen. So i can completely understand over using cgi.

I like your synopsis english mummy

FatherFintanFay · 30/09/2019 20:35

A lot of period dramas get filmed where I live, as there are a couple of streets which are almost unchanged from how they would have looked 200 years ago. But obviously there are things like wires and aerials and road markings that have to be CGIed out, and I'm always amazed by how artificial it ends up looking. I almost think it would be better to film on specially made sets instead, and only do outdoor scenes in the open countryside, well away from any pylons Grin

kazzaD66 · 30/09/2019 20:46

Great storyline Englishmummy Grin
Now, let's see how much it tallys with the last two episodes. I shall be most upset if it veers too far away from that Grin

Kit19 · 30/09/2019 21:51

Young stringer is entirely to good for the lot of them! Hopefully he’ll realise this & disappear off to London to work with John Nash & ppl who appreciate him (& you know remember to pay him)

I really hope he doesn’t propose to Charlotte because he’s going to be turned down - as someone said, Austen would never have a woman marry someone poor if someone which was available, this is after the 1800s

Doesn’t mean I don’t think he’d Make a thousand times better husband than Sidney

Kit19 · 30/09/2019 21:51

Someone rich was available

PirateWeasel · 01/10/2019 07:10

I also wondered how Charlotte miraculously obtained a perfectly fitting evening gown after her impromptu dash to London. And did she rope the cook in to style her hair? There wouldn't have been a ladies maid in the house when there were no ladies in residence.

I think Lady Denham's stashed her real will somewhere and it will turn out she's left everything to Tom so Sanditon will be saved, Esther will have to marry Lord B, Clara will be up the duff by Edward and they'll have to go and be poor somewhere together.

ScreamingValenta · 01/10/2019 07:44

I found it very unrealistic that Charlotte would tell the whole, scandalous story of Georgiana's kidnap to a woman she'd only just met and whose name she didn't know. Everyone involved who cared about Georgiana would be desperate to hush the matter up, because in those days it would have ruined her 'reputation' even though she didn't do anything worse than arrange a secret tryst that went wrong.

Nor would she have confessed her feelings for Sidney to a complete stranger.

Even in the present day, if you met a stranger at a party and opened with a polite line about it being nice to get away from the crowd, you'd be left open-mouthed if your remark was answered with a detailed account of someone's secret affair and kidnapping!

The Charlotte/Sidney romance has just turned into uninspired chick-lit plotting now. How many more times are we going to see them become closer, then have a misunderstanding, then get closer again?

And Charlotte's devastation at seeing Sidney talk to his rich, widowed ex was OTT - he'd be unlikely to ignore her, and it wasn't as if she walked in on them rolling around together on snake-patterned tiles!

Rooting for Esther and Babbington now - they're the only ones I care about.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 01/10/2019 07:50

We all knew mr stringer wouldn’t get Charlotte as soon as he appeared on screen - they’ve made his sideburns a tad too long for a successful love interest. GAVEL

Girasole02 · 01/10/2019 07:50

Still with it for Jack Fox! Really want to like it but it's not Austen enough for me and the Gentleman Jack music doesn't fit.

newgame989 · 01/10/2019 09:53

I'm trying to recall if another Austen character has ever been as insipid and naive as Charlotte and not been punished for it - I wonder where Austen would've gone with it. Elizabeth Bennett was wrong about Darcy initially but not in a thoughtless way, whereas the Sidney/Charlotte relationship seems much more master and pet. Hard to tell what's down to bad screenwriting of Charlotte and what's down to the actress.

I see pride and prejudice is back on the BBC iplayer, may have to watch that again!

newgame989 · 01/10/2019 09:54

agree screamingvalenta we can calculate the number of misunderstandings to come based on how many more episodes they have to churn out.

JaneJeffer · 01/10/2019 11:01

I've read that Andrew Davies said they might make another series Grin

OP posts:
louise5754 · 01/10/2019 11:57

Does anyone know how old Charlotte is supposed to be? She looks about 16/17 and Sydney nearly 40

ScreamingValenta · 01/10/2019 12:09

I was wondering if Andrew Davies might have a crack at The Watsons after this.

icelolly99 · 01/10/2019 14:06

Brilliant englishmummyinwales Grin

englishmummyinwales · 01/10/2019 16:40

Oh I’m quite excited at the prospect of a second series. Shall I contact Andrew Davies with my proposed synopsis? 😂

I genuinely have loads of ideas!

Also, may I just agree with the suggestion that young Mr Stringer’s sideburns have negated his chances? They are bordering on John McCrirrick territory which suit no one. I’ll introduce a good barber for Series 2...😆

ScreamingValenta · 01/10/2019 17:02

I'd give a second series a try, but I won't wait on tenterhooks. There's been so much padding in this series - the drawn out cricket match, dozens of scenes between Edward and Esther telling us exactly the same thing (they fancy each other and they're after auntie's money) - it would have been better as six episodes, not eight. I'm not convinced another series can be squeezed out of the idea.

theproudgeek · 01/10/2019 18:49

Daft question maybe, but is Susan meant to be Lady Susan from the other unpublished, in her lifetime, Jane Austen novel. Disclaimer, I haven't read 'Lady Susan' or 'Sanditon' she just seemed like an odd character to introduce this late in the game.

ScreamingValenta · 01/10/2019 18:52

I wondered that too, proudgeek. If so, she's a nasty piece of work! Grin

Possibly Andrew Davies has 'Lady Susan' on his to-do list.

theproudgeek · 01/10/2019 19:07

@ScreamingValenta Maybe he's trying to create an Austen shared universe.

Aoibhneas · 01/10/2019 19:24

It is so awful, so predictable and so badly written.
Men did not go naked on the beach, it's actually funny in a bad way.

FatherFintanFay · 01/10/2019 19:45

Please god no, not a second series. There's barely enough ideas for this one. As a pp said, it's just an endless cycle of Sidney is nasty, Sidney is nice, Edward and Esther scheme ineffectually, Lady Denham makes a snitty remark, Tom is a bit of an arse, Charlotte looks confused, repeat x 10. How can there possibly be the scope for more?

JaneJeffer · 01/10/2019 20:18

I felt like Lady Susan was just a figment of Charlotte's imagination!

It's not great writing but it's entertaining fluff on a Sunday night.

And the totty definitely keeps me watching 😜
