Buying and Selling - The Property Brothers

I’ve just discovered this and am obsessed. 😳 Firstly I am totally envious at the mega size of what are, to Canadians, normal family homes. Secondly, why does every single couple, without exception, stipulate that they must have twin basins in the bathroom? Do most couples really stand side by side each morning to brush their teeth?

Alexa this is my favourite property programme. The walk in closets are bigger than our small bedrooms.
Yes I wonder about two bathroom basins as well.
They have amazing big rooms. I wonder how they'd cope in a two up two down.

TDogsInHats · 16/08/2019 22:01

I've never brushed my teeth at the same time as DH. But I have with the DC. It was no problem rinsing in the same basin.

TDogsInHats · 16/08/2019 22:02

The brothers have wonderful teeth.😁

whatswithtodaytoday · 16/08/2019 22:07

I love the Property Brothers 😍 Johnathon can come and rip out my kitchen any day.

We play Property Brothers Bingo:
'open concept'
'cabinetry'
'quartz countertop'
'floating sink'
Tiled fireplace
Tiny sofas/uncomfy chairs to make the room look bigger
And the 'after' video always shows them playing outside, and was blatantly filmed before they moved in.

WineGummyBear · 16/08/2019 22:09

Love this show.

Backsplash is my favourite word they say

AlexaAmbidextra · 16/08/2019 23:08

Yes, PB bingo.

Subway tiles
Glass tile backsplash.
Tray nicely placed on the bed.
Soaker tub. (I had to Google that one).

It’s so formulaic and predictable but I love it.

And yes to Jonathan coming over for a bit of home improvement! 😈

TDogsInHats · 17/08/2019 11:12

Soaker tub, yeah what's that about?
Also they say switch something out (rather than change or upgrade)
I'd have Jonathan and Drew over anyday Wink

wowfudge · 17/08/2019 11:16

I love it too. They are honest with sellers about what is wrong with their house if they want to sell for a good price. Some of the viewers are obviously plants because they pick up on very specific things as they walk round. You also know that Jonathan just sticks a couple of tiles on and there's a whole team of people doing the work. Still love it. I don't get why the Americans who are on it hate carpet so much, but what do I know?

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/08/2019 14:31

TDogs. Now you’re just being greedy. 😂

They all seem to favour very dark kitchen cupboards too. Interesting as dark wood cupboards are now considered old-fashioned over here.

I too love the Property Bros (I’d pick Jonathan over Drew because he looks very sexy wielding his massive hammer but I’m not fussy really). What I don’t understand is just how easy the buying and selling process appears on the programme - they always get a really good offer for their house, usually asking price or above, they view 3 houses and always buy one, even if it’s not really that suitable. I’ve never seen an episode where they decide to stay put in their newly renovated house or where they say they’ll keep looking for the perfect house. It’s much harder over here for Phil and Kirsty.

DragonMamma · 18/08/2019 07:01

I’ve found my people! I love the Property Brothers Ave was bereft when I finished all the My Dream Home that Sky had to offer.

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/08/2019 07:58

And the speed with which their houses sell and wanting 30 day closures! How do they do it?

OP posts:
wowfudge · 18/08/2019 08:06

I wonder if there are unsuccessful examples that never make it onto the TV shows?

A lot of the ideas are sound and repeated time after time - the tiled kitchen backsplashes and renovating the fireplace or putting one in - but they must work. Staging for sale happens a lot in the US depending on the area. I was a bit disappointed when my cousin put her house on the market (she's in the US) and it hadn't been staged and just looked like a normal, though huge, family home

SenecaFalls · 18/08/2019 14:50

I don't get why the Americans who are on it hate carpet so much, but what do I know?

Carpet is pretty much out of fashion in the US (generalization alert!) these days except for bedrooms.

As for a preference for dark kitchen cabinets, that is also changing, especially where I live in the US.

TDogsInHats · 18/08/2019 18:41

I watched some of the first series and the buyers were shown a lot more than three properties (sometimes they'd not even go in due to location or multiple mail boxes outside one house..all mail delivered to this box for the neighborhood would be annoying all the coming and going)
So that's why Drew says you've seen plenty of homes, but the show only seems to be three houses they've viewed.

EdWinchester · 18/08/2019 19:41

I thought it was all filmed in Canada - hence the way everyone says 'hoose'.

But in the US, it's pretty unusual not to have twin sinks, and carpet is not popular apart from in bedrooms. I think the carpet thing is similar to the UK now. None of our friends have carpets downstairs anymore.

Hopefullysmart · 18/08/2019 19:54

More PB bingo....must have sectional Grin

wowfudge · 18/08/2019 21:08

Some of the later series are filmed in the US. There's an entire series filmed in the Nashville area.

Related to the carpet dislike, if it's just about fashion, is that buyers seem to want somewhere which is cosmetically exactly to their tastes.

SenecaFalls · 19/08/2019 01:15

Twin sinks are very common in the US. DH and I are seldom in the bathroom at the same time, but it's nice to have two sinks with room for our separate grooming accoutrements.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 19/08/2019 01:31

The part that seems wrong to me is that when I lived in Canada, Ontario and USA Boston is that everybody took their shoes OFF when they went into a house

Everyone had a cupboard or area to put shoes etc next to the front door

These houses quite often don't have this so the owners either don't do this or their visitors or they always enter/leave via the boot room

CoolShoeshine · 19/08/2019 17:28

For the bingo you need to add in really dark wood affect flooring. They love that look.

CoolShoeshine · 19/08/2019 17:32

Sorry wood effect

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/08/2019 20:05

Can somebody from the USA/Canada please explain your home buying process? It seems to take no time at all between making an offer and moving in. Also, so many times on the programme I hear them talking about having to get their home sold as they’ll be paying two mortgages. Can people over there really afford to buy their new house without throwing the old one into the pot?

OP posts:
SenecaFalls · 19/08/2019 22:34

Alexa in the US, it varies somewhat from state to state but generally speaking it goes like this: 1) Buyer views houses 2) Buyer makes a written offer 3) Seller accepts offer or makes a counter offer for a higher price, also in writing 4) Buyer and Seller sign contract, secured by a deposit from Buyer. There is now a fully enforceable contract. It may have contingencies, such as Buyer being able to get financing or an acceptable inspection. 5) Contingencies are satisfied 6) There is a closing whereby Seller takes title to the house. Normally the Seller has to move out prior to closing.

It's possible to close in a short time when paying cash or Buyer has been pre-qualified for a mortgage.
