Why is this on in the summer.... needs to be in the autumn, cosied up on the sofa on a dark evening!
Cant wait for it though.

I just assumed that they called every dog they had Garrick/Horace. Thought Ross's hairline had finally receded recently, but still waiting for full-on badger look!

stumbledin · 12/08/2019 15:17

I think as others have said that dragging in a real life historical character has actual made the plot line worse. I dont know much about that period but presumably even down in Cornwall which thought / thinks of itself as another country they would hear about debates about slavery, introduction of bank notes etc.. Why wasn't it thought that the existing characters were able to have conversations and disagreements about that, but stick to exploring the interactions between the families.

I dont understand why people keep going on about the books.

The have said over and over again that this is an imagined idea of what happened to the Poldark characters in the ten years not covered by the books.

And have seen it reported, which may only be a fancy, that both of the main characters have expressed an interest in making a series in ten years time based on the books.

PS quoting storylines from the books could be seen a spoilers, though it is such a mess now I dont really care.

I used to love poldark and have recently been rewatching the first series. I just couldn't get over when he cheated on demelza. I went off him and couldn't really commit to the show

Same here. And the way he did it as well, he basically raped Elizabeth, it was horrible. I know it's in the books and presumably the original series, but I totally went of it after that.

How can such a complete dickhead be any kind of 'hero' character?

Plus, the story lines seem so boring and samey now. Mine is threatened with shut down, Ross goes and sorts it out, someone is sentenced to death for this and that, Ross goes and sorts it out, there is some sort of money issue, Ross goes and sorts it out, Ross has a fight with someone, Ross treats Demelza like shit, some sort of forbidden love somewhere... And repeat.

Admittedly, as I said, I haven't really been watching it properly recently, but that's how it seems to me.

icelolly99 · 13/08/2019 23:13

How many episodes are there in this series? I've got the last 5 books lined up to read and am wondering how long I've got to wait til I can dive in!

laughingnow · 14/08/2019 09:48

I think Series 5 ends next Sunday

Papergirl1968 · 14/08/2019 10:32

There are three episodes left. We’ve just had five of eight.

stumbledin · 15/08/2019 15:12

I had heard that Poldark was going to be demoted to 8p to make way for Sanditon (sexed up Austin) but that was a complete lie!

However I did see that the last 2 episodes will be shown Sunday and Monday (presumably Bank Holiday weekend). So I think even they must be thinking they cant drag it out much longer.

And agree that Poldark is such a unempathetic shit. Not just as said up thread about this treatment of Demelza and Eizabeth, but he is stil so caught up in his male values that he thinks what he wants is right.

So no though about the impact on Demelza of putting their whole family into hock to the bank, expecting her to put up with his crass (hero?) friend, inviting his bastard child into her home, and on and on.

I thought at the beginning he was a snob who never got over being the junior part of the family and resented not inheriting the family home, just because he thinks he is smarter and bolder and more of a man. (Not forgetting he was a school bully). So he just cant help himself. He has reconciled to having a wife that luckily does all sorts of shit work, but never treats her as an equal and endlessly partonises her.

In the original tv series, and in fact the books, did people think of him as a hero, a male role model?

OrangeGirl1 · 18/08/2019 22:58

The last two episodes will air next Sunday and Monday.

I'm glad tbh. It's lost its spark

IcedPurple · 19/08/2019 22:37

I've been a big fan of Poldark - and of gorgeous Aidan Turner - since the start, so I'm a bit sad to see it fade away like this. This 5th series shouldn't have been made. The stories came to a natural end in series 4. The ability to know when to stop seems to be a dying art in modern TV.

ElspethFlashman · 19/08/2019 22:46

This week was so so bad.

And ill watch any old shite!

But I found the speechifying virtually unwatchable the last two weeks. Sooooo dragged out, so boring, so smug and sanctimonious.

Thank God Ned is Ded.

Pasithea · 19/08/2019 22:58

This atrocious series and portrayal of Ned and Kitty Despard who are real historical figures is to end this weekend. By order of the Peaky Blinders.

IcedPurple · 20/08/2019 16:42

Yeah, why shoehorn actual historical characters and complex social issues into what is basically an escapist romance? Terrible idea.

Persea · 25/08/2019 21:58

I’m a bit behind everyone else - think I’m currently on ep5 - but Tess is irritating the shit out of me.

IcedPurple · 25/08/2019 23:44

Another lousy episode. Can't wait for this to end.

Mind you, that French guy was very hot, much hotter than series 5 Ross and his terrible hair. So there's that.

Papergirl1968 · 26/08/2019 10:56

Frenchie is hot, nice blue eyes.
I’ve noticed in recent episodes how bow-legged Evil George is. Ross carries off the frockcoat and boots look rather better. And I’m starting, rather late in the day, to find Dr Enys rather attractive.

Basketofkittens · 26/08/2019 13:22

Why is Caroline being so stand offish and sulky?

GladAllOver · 26/08/2019 13:33

The plot is getting ridiculous now. So many far-fetched story lines and coincidences. Poldark with his face badly cut one day and perfectly healed the next.
And the constant to and fro between Cornwall and London in a beautiful coach. That was an exhausting two day journey in those days.
But we watch it anyway!

Persea · 26/08/2019 14:00

@GladAllOver - totally agree re the plot. This series has just been absurd. I’ve binged all 7 episodes this weekend and the script writers should be hanged a la Ned.
The episode 7 French dude / Poldark-the-turncoat revolutionary was the maddest yet. And that’s saying something, in a series of stupid storylines.

Persea · 26/08/2019 14:01

@Papergirl1968 - Dr Enys has always been hot!

Papergirl1968 · 26/08/2019 14:22

Good looking yes but nevertheless Dr Enys never really appealed to me before now, for some reason. I think it was seeing him attending to Horace that gave me the fanny gallops!
As for the rest of them, even the peasants look too well fed, and clean, complete with perfect teeth, to be realistic.

Persea · 26/08/2019 14:42

Ahhh yes, he was exceptionally tender with Horace. 😍

longwayoff · 26/08/2019 21:07

Thank you all, it's been awful, thought it was me. Counting the minutes til this ends. Yawn.

IcedPurple · 26/08/2019 21:30

So that's it then.

I felt compelled to stick it out but I realy havne't enjoyed this 5th series. By turns trite and ridiculous, which is not a good combination.

sluj · 26/08/2019 21:31

I'm confused, doesn't Geoffrey Charles own Trenwith?

ForgetMeNot0 · 26/08/2019 21:37

Geoffrey Charles does own Trenwith when he comes of age.

I've moaned about this series but I'm sad the series is over now. To me it didn't feel like 'the ending' as those of us who've read the books know there is so much left to cover in the Poldark world. I hope they revisit it in the future but I can't see it happening. The actors will no doubt move on. It would be great to see the later books adapted some day
