Is anyone watching this? If so, do you know who the commentator is? Her accent is really bugging me and she keeps dropping her h's in the wrong place and adding them unnecessarily! But her voice sounds familiar Confused

It's awful isn't it!! I don't know who she is but I've spent most of the programme so far cringing at her silly accent.

Kenworthington · 01/04/2019 21:23

I’m a Devon lass born and bred and I’ve never ever heard such an accent. Maybe it’s Cornish but I feel like it’s put on??

Dazzalm · 01/04/2019 21:26

I'm Cornish and have never heard anything like it either. I think she's trying for (and failing at) generic West Country.

Kenworthington · 01/04/2019 21:31

The funny thing is it’s rare to actually hear anyone with a string West country accent. There used to be the odd old person on the rural village I grew up in where the accent was so thick you could barely understand it!

WinterfoldWanderer · 01/04/2019 21:33

I’m Devon born and bred too and was really looking forward to this programme, but the voiceover has totally put me off. Why does everyone think we’re a load of mangleworzel-eating Demelzas? Grrr

Blobby10 · 01/04/2019 21:38

I wondered if it was Mel Gilderoyc (???sp) putting on the silly accent on purpose but don’t think it is! I love both counties and adore a true West Country accent but had to switch this off 😕

I knew I would find a thread on this! I am Devon born and bred too, also spend loads of time in Cornwall and agree the narrators accent is totally spoiling the programme it's ridiculous.

WinterfoldWanderer · 01/04/2019 21:58

I think the content is quite lazy too - from two amazing counties, apart from the piece on the lovely Ruby Reds at the Camborne Show, they have chosen twee tourist villages of Cockington and Clovelly ... not sure I can bear to watch the next episode 😩

Dazzalm · 01/04/2019 22:02

Jenny Coverack was the narrator. Cornish name but from Bristol apparently.

PortiaCastis · 01/04/2019 22:05

I'm Cornish as well and I just wonder why the narrator was putting on that weird accent that I've never heard in my life

Blobby10 · 02/04/2019 08:50

Thanks @Dazzqalm - I'm almost tempted to watch the next episode and see if she's as bad in that one!

@WinterfoldWanderer I wonder if they focus on the established tourist places to draw people in? Or maybe avoid sending hoardes of us grommets to the other nice places that you locals can keep secret! Although I love my holidays in both counties, I always feel guilty for the locals about how it must disrupt their lives, especially on Saturdays and the A30!

Am just watching this programme on catch up and can’t believe the dreadful accent, googled reviews of the program and Mumsnet came up so I’ve joined so I can join the rant!
I’ve lived in Cornwall and Dorset and cant think what the producers were thinking, none of the people interviewed talked with a ridiculous accent so why did they think it appropriate to use such a fake commentry!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/04/2019 18:11

I missed this. Well, I avoided it, as I get annoyed at programmes about Cornwall (where I live) which only ever look at the south and west of the county and think "North Cornwall" stops at Newquay.

Tell me it didn't do this?

PortiaCastis · 02/04/2019 18:47

Fuzzy. We had the Minack and Camborne Show and nowhere else was mentioned but there is another episode next week, I'm in the West and yes I agree we often get the film crews here but not many other places are mentioned on these shows..
The accent on that programme was really quite odd though

FuzzyPuffling · 02/04/2019 19:16

I don't think I've ever seen anything north of Tintagel, and then only loads about the woo-woo connection. I might have to watch it just to laugh at the accent.

Have they discussed the ordering of jam and cream on a scone yet?

PortiaCastis · 02/04/2019 19:59

Nope no scone debate yet but is has to be on the agenda though.
We get an awful lot of film crews here and more recently one from Germany who were filming an adaptation of a Rosamunde Pilcher novel but they weren't popular as they used our local pub for a location and they closed it for a day!
Hopefully places that are not the Minack or the Eden project will be shown next week and yes worth watching for a good laugh because of the ridiculous accent.

ineedaholidaynow · 02/04/2019 20:37

DH and I both commented on the accent!

SimonitesSocks · 03/04/2019 07:12

I thought her accent was so awful - and something I'd never heard before - I was embarrassed for any West Country people!

Mollyjam28113 · 08/04/2019 21:44

@winterfoldwanderer you just made my day 😁 I'm watching, cringing! But then you've referred to yourself as a grommet.... A grommet is a tube inserted into the ear canal, often to clear glue ear. However, the Cornish for the influx of tourists (or 'ants') is emmet. I think you maybe an emmet rather than a ear tube? Thank you for diverting me from her awful fake accent! 😂

ToEarlyForDecorations · 08/04/2019 21:47

It's lovely scenery but the narrative is a little dull.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 08/04/2019 21:55

Molly perhaps an emmett/grockle portmanteau?!

0Kaybee0 · 08/04/2019 22:12

Found this thread from the common annoyance with her random accent. Clocked the name on the credits and this be er...
www.mandy.com/actor/profile/jenny-coverack#
She lists. .
Accents (UK) Cockney, Cornish, Devon, Northern Irish, RP, Welsh, Standard
Think she might want to revise that!!

chriss973 · 08/04/2019 22:20

I am cringing at the accent too! It is such a great series but it is marred by that awful accent! Dropping the 'aitches' it seriously makes me cringe!

Blobby10 · 09/04/2019 09:35

@Mollyjam I think it was me who referred to 'grommets' during my reply to winter !! I genuinely thought that's what the locals called us! Although I'm not sure an 'emmet' is any better!!

I am so glad everyone else is picking up on the terrible accent too. I grew up in the far south west of Cornwall and I've heard some very thick accents (and done some transcribing of them for some history projects) and I've never heard anything like the one she's putting on.

In general the programme was OK, typical tourist type things (aside from the show) but it's still nice to see things from home sometimes.
