Is anyone watching this? If so, do you know who the commentator is? Her accent is really bugging me and she keeps dropping her h's in the wrong place and adding them unnecessarily! But her voice sounds familiar Confused

You can call us tourists what you like but the last time I looked, Devon and Cornwall were in England (even the latter, despite all that Kernow cobblers), and as an Englishman I regard them as much mine as anyone born there and whose family goes back for generations. I'm an Englishman visiting a part of my own country, and unlike others on here, I don't believe in all this regionalism nonsense. A regional identity is all well and good, but our overall one takes precedence. You're falling for that right-on BBC regionalism nonsense - i.e. they used to label programmes 'BBC England', whereas now they label them 'English Regions'. It is notable that they still label things as 'BBC Scotland', BBC Wales, etc, and that's because the media are decidedly anti-English. As to the narrator's accent (she's from Bristol), it seems that some object to it not because it's dodgy, but because she's attempting one at all. Some sniffy types obviously prefer the generic, boring middle class type accents that predominate those taking part in the programme, rather than hearing a real Devonian or Cornish burr as spoken by an older generation. Like most stuck up snobs, they look down on accents of any kind, even those local to them, because in their mind accents represent the unintelligent lower classes of which they wish to have no association with. So no, even if the accent she uses isn't accurate, it's more a case of said snobs not wanting hear one at all. We are losing our regional accents (and accents are one part of regionalism I don't object to), and all because of self-loathing embarrassment.

Thank you, we will......
Please drive faster, or leave your car at home.....
Hands up D and C folk, who would read off a script for less than a jobbing actor, to make sure the regional accent (that still exists) isn't bastardised into something only emmets think is acceptable!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 16/04/2019 01:57

Can you imagine if they used a fake accent for a programme on Wales or Scotland, there would be uproar and rightly so, I found it quite insulting, I hope the programme makers see this thread they should be really embarrassed, her accent is farcical.

I can't watch any more , that voice is so awful . MickyG - as far as I can tell most posters don't want a "posh" voiceover just an authentic West Country one . I'm in Dorset and love to hear the local dialect - all too rare these days , but can't abide the awful "mummerset" accent that is used for west country on tv

PortiaCastis · 16/04/2019 17:05

Micky G we just want an authentic accent not a contrived one with aitches dropped deliberately
I've lived on the Lizard all my life and never heard an accent like that narrators and being in the tourist trade I've heard a few but hey in Kernow you do.

Hazlenutpie · 16/04/2019 22:07

Not just me then!

Mollyjam28113 · 18/04/2019 07:36

Micky G, bless your wandering soul - you may consider us to be whatever you like, but I'm not English. I accept that I am British and have no problem with that, but I am Cornish and I'll choose my identity, thank you kindly.
Accent wise, we know how we feel. You carry on feeling what you do, but don't dictate how you believe we should feel.

LazyLizzy · 19/04/2019 09:26

Such a shame but I can't get my ead around it.

It's when the arbour master goes ome for is am and a ot cup of tea.
It's ard to understand.

GrannyGill · 23/04/2019 13:52

Really love watching this programme but the voiceover is driving me mad. I have visited Devon many times but never ever heard an accent like it. It’s such a shame that it’s spoiling the viewers’ experience whilst watching. Why employ somebody to “act” the accent instead of using a person born and bred in either Devon or Cornwall?

MamaMountain · 24/04/2019 10:43

So glad I’ve found this! I’m just sat watching this with my Yorkshireman husband. I grew up in Cornwall and although my accent has all but gone (I do still get pulled up on my dialect however!) I can spot a dud one a mile off! It’s proper annoying me! However some years ago on one of the BBC’s Panorama episodes about some dodgy care home in Cornwall the investigator pronounced Kernow as KerNOW ... that proper grated one me Hmm

Hornet27 · 30/04/2019 09:20

Would love to watch this program, but just can’t bear the dreadful accent of the narrator - it’s cringe worthy - we tried again with the episode the other night, hoping it would be better, but had to turn it off - it makes you feel the same as someone scraping their nails down a chalk board! I think she would be more suited to narrating Captain Pugwash - eh me earty!

Jedeye · 06/05/2019 21:18

Oh my goodness her accent is beyond annoying. I’ve turned it off too.

I’m from the area and can confirm that nobody has that ridiculous accent.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/05/2019 08:30

I’d missed this series. JUst tried to watch an episode. That accent is even worse than I’d expected from this thread.

Someone on twitter’s suggested it could be turned into a drinking game. Hopefully it’s not going to involve drinking every time an H is dropped. Nobody will make it to the first ad break.

LilBoaty · 07/05/2019 09:15

Why didn't anyone from the production company realise her fake accent sounds ridiculous. It's hilarious and ruins the program.

I know that some people end up with odd accents due to one thing and another but to make up an accent for a documentary voice over is just stupid especially when it's so badly done.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/05/2019 22:19

The more I watch the funnier it’s getting.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/06/2020 21:40

Did anyone watch the first episode of the second series? They’ve got John Nettles to narrate it.

WingBingo · 14/06/2020 10:13

Yes I did.

Somehow managed to paint Newquay in a good light.
