An hour long programme about home education, and should councils have more power, authority in that area, I dont HE, but i know people who do. Its caused a lot of contention on twitter so I'll be watching.

Yes I'm watching! God I have to say I love the idea of home educating it makes me think of the pre-school years

staydazzling · 04/02/2019 22:28

hmmm looking pretty biased so far, not really pointing the finger at themselves enough are they?

Watching.
Both my children are home educated. Slightly differently though as they have a private tutor they go to every day.

staydazzling · 04/02/2019 22:33

i take my hat off Mama it must be hard work,

OP posts:
staydazzling · 04/02/2019 22:36

theyve not shown anyone doing a good job yet, just either misrepresenting good ones or poor ones,

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 04/02/2019 22:40

So biased actually

MamaHechtick · 04/02/2019 22:44

It's hard and expensive, as we want them to have an education. We can't afford private school but have been told by several teachers and nursery staff that our youngest cannot cope in a large class, won't do well, isn't ready and if we were to put them in school they would fail.

We are hoping to move to get them into a small village school but for now the tutor is the only option. Thankfully they are both still early years (aged 5 and 6) so we have a bit of time.

notgivingin78910 · 04/02/2019 22:45

I've said this on another thread. It was way too biased. I've missed watching a very interesting documentary about Walt Disney- to watch this crap.

purpleme12 · 04/02/2019 22:45

What's this about being accused of having Munchausen byproxy?? Who said that about her??
How have they put on a child in need plan if this isn't the case?

staydazzling · 04/02/2019 22:46

its disgraceful a girl as smart as Lily is at home thru need rather than choice, my sister , severely mentally disabled mentally about 3, went to a marvellous SEN school , schools have really nosedived. :(

I home educate 3 of our 5 children.

This certainly isn't showing home education in a very good light so far.

I'm impressed that they seem to be focusing on how badly children are being let down by schools. I think it is shocking that so many children are not getting the education that they are legally entitled to, whether they are at home or school.

I don't know how I feel about tighter regulation. We've not seen anybody from the LA in over 2 years.

IrenetheQuaint · 04/02/2019 22:51

The lack of support for parents is really depressing. The government pays schools £4000/5000 each for each pupil, so why couldn't home-educating parents have access to that budget to spend on suitable tutors?

staydazzling · 04/02/2019 22:53

What about the Polish boy who was starved to death who went to school everyday? Hmm

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 04/02/2019 22:53

I've got nothing against these children being checked to check they're ok somehow cos can't see anything wrong with that. Like they say normally things can come to light at school where they're not

lalafafa · 04/02/2019 22:54

The woman with the 3 boys is doing them no favours letting them stay in bed until 1pm, the youngest playing video games. Take all that away from them . god knows what kind of adults they will become.

MamaHechtick · 04/02/2019 22:58

I don't have a problem with a register for home educated children. But as the op says, children who attend school every day have also died from abuse and neglect, and of course children under the care of social services themselves.

This isn't representative of any of the home education families I have met.
Most of the families I've met are actually ex teachers who have left the profession and taken their children out of education with them.

Thesearmsofmine · 04/02/2019 23:00

Popping on to see the reactions o the programme. I home ed my children and I am wary of watching because it’ll make me cross!

Daisiesinavase · 04/02/2019 23:07

Even the title of the programme (which I think is also the title of the Child Commisioner's report) is biased and inflammatory. Home educated children aren't "skipping" school and the vast majority aren't "invisible".
Dylan Seabright obviously wasn't unknown to the authorities either. The authorities just didn't take any action to help him.
And Kyra Isaq wasn't home educated. I get so fed up with people saying that.

happy2bhomely · 04/02/2019 23:08

We already have agencies to deal with safeguarding. Anyone can report a safeguarding concern to their local SS team. My children see sports coaches weekly. They see doctors, dentists and opticians regularly. They all have a duty to report any concerns they have.

I think I am leaning towards the need for a register though. The idea of children going completely under the radar is scary.

I don't agree that my provision should be monitored by a truancy officer or similar.

"If you're home educated why aren't you at home?" Smile

lalafafa · 04/02/2019 23:10

Out of 11,000 HE kids 263 took their GCSE,s.

Daisiesinavase · 04/02/2019 23:10

I do wish they had interviewed some normal, long term home educators as well.

staydazzling · 04/02/2019 23:11

I agree Lily feels too laid back, I feel for Sam, Bailey's mum. And Definitely Lilys Mum!
