Absolutely gutted that I've just finished season two of this. One of the best things I've watched in ages. Has been my daily maternity leave treat when feeding DD and now I've finished it I'm a bit bereft! I loved it.
Does anyone have any recommendations for similar shows? We've got Netflix and Amazon.
Thanks in advance!

I loved it too! Really well made show and very uplifting.

There’s not many shows like it on TV. Have you seen the Gilmore Girls? It was written by the same woman. You might also like Crazy Ex Girlfriend which has big musical numbers or Mad Men if you liked the retro look of Mrs Maisel. These shows are all on Netflix.

Lordamighty · 08/01/2019 14:30

Haven’t watched Mrs Maisel yet but it is on the list for when I have time. I can recommend the Kominsky Method starring Michael Douglas, in fact he has just won a Golden Globe for his part.

reallyanotherone · 08/01/2019 14:31

I watched the first couple and it just didn’t grab me.

Should i try again? I couldn’t see where it was going tbh.

ParadiseLaundry · 08/01/2019 15:16

It's bloody awesome isn't it? There's nothing like it imo. After watching Mrs Maisel though I watched The Good Place on Netflix and really enjoyed it.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 08/01/2019 15:47

Brilliant. Thanks all. I'll give all those a try and see what grabs me.

Had a quick flick through Netflix during the last feed and stumbled across Tidying Up with Marie Kondo so I definitely need an excuse not to sit through that again (looking around the house and feeling a tad stressed now!!).

@reallyanotherone - definitely worth giving it another go. It takes a couple of episodes for the story to develop. The second series is even better and they really developed the other characters (Suzie Myers and Midge's dad were my favourites. They were hilarious) .

I loved it - i think only Mad Men comes close really

reallyanotherone · 08/01/2019 17:24

Ahh you see i didn’t much like mad men either...

OnlineAlienator · 08/01/2019 17:25

I can see how theyd be an acquired taste!

NicoleNoPants · 08/01/2019 17:27

@Waving I didn’t find it very helpful- it was all stuff we do anyway (and I’m sure you do too as it’s common sense) and the couple in the first episode were quite annoying.

reallyanotherone · 08/01/2019 17:28

I think i’d have enjoyed it far more with Louis as the central character :) He’s the only reason i watched past the first season...

IcedPurple · 08/01/2019 21:02

I started watching this but gave up after 3 episodes. Thought the 'comedy' was very contrived and just not very funny. Great production values and I loved the fashions, but the characters and situations just weren't that interesting for me.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 14/01/2019 14:11

I absolutely loved season 1, I watched it feeding my newborn last year. Looking forward to season 2. Have you tried Grace and Frankie? It's on netflix. It's nice, very funny, quite emotional. I love Jane Fonda so I'm a bit biased.
Offspring on netflix us good too. Quirky.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 15/01/2019 18:08

I’m so sad to have finished season 2. I loved the holiday camp episodes.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 16/01/2019 12:53

@OVAgroundWOMBlingfree yes! The holiday camp was great. Susie dancing at the end of season show was classic!

ginghamstarfish · 16/01/2019 22:56

Yes, loved it, but it took a couple of episodes to get into it. The period detail is very well done.

Duckswaddle · 17/01/2019 12:34

I enjoyed it too, although Midge gets more irritating and selfish as the series goes on. Suzie and Abe are great, they do develop the other characters around Midge which makes it more interesting.

EachandEveryone · 17/01/2019 23:16

Yes does Midge look after her children at all? 😃

The baby in the drawer in the maternity hospital did that really happen?

I totally love the show. The guy who plays Lenny Bruce looks just like him.

BitOfFun · 18/01/2019 04:07

Is the first season also available?

EnormousDormouse · 18/01/2019 05:04

I'm just watching this on Amazon Prime and absolutely love it. It is very much a grown up (well, sweary) Gilmore Girls. That had flawed characters too (Lorelei's offhand treatment of her boyfriends, Rory being generally unpleasant) ; to me it makes them more human.
And I like the little bits of social history that seem to be woven in but are not preachy, and the music.
I don't think I could recommend anything like it except GG, would love some suggestions too as the second series is going too fast.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 18/01/2019 11:26

@EachandEveryone the hospital drawer was bizarre! She really gave it a violent shove to shut it though! Not sure if it really was real but this suggests it might have existed somewhere
Crazy!
@BitOfFun - season 1 is still on Amazon.

Thanks, Waving!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 19/01/2019 19:01

I forgot about the baby drawer! I had to rewind that scene in shock and show DH. Bloody hilarious.

Gooseysgirl · 19/01/2019 20:48

I bloody love it!!! The comedy routines are the least funny parts I think... the Abe and Suzy characters are brilliantly acted and hilarious!

hapagirl · 19/01/2019 20:57

I liked it too though I do think Midge is pretty entitled and a neglectful mum. I like Abe though I didn’t like the Paris scenes. Too cliche. I really like Suzie and wish her well. I looked up Lenny Bruce. His life was such a sad story. That show he did at the end of season 2 in on YouTube. It was reproduced almost word for word.

bakingdemon · 22/01/2019 13:57

I'm watching this on mat leave too! I love it, but agree that Midge gets more annoying (I'm on S2E4). Abe is my favourite character:

I'm also watching Good Girls Revolt on Amazon Prime which has at least one of the same cast, set in NYC in 1969 at a news magazine where the female staff are all researchers and not allowed to be journalists. It's sort of Mrs Maisel meets Mad Men and I'm enjoying it so far.
