Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

For me, whooping cough was the worst childhood illness. I wasn’t vacc’d and I got it when I was 9 in the school
Hols. I remember sleeping in my parents bed and endless coughing.

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2019 20:41

I had Whooping Cough when I was about 13 (early 80s). I was t vaccinated - not available to me, but my sister was (4 years younger). I became ill on holiday, and my parents left me with friends who lived nearby until I felt better enough to travel.

mineofuselessinformation · 28/01/2019 20:46

Dc1 has measles around 1998. They were very ill, but had been vaccinated like a pp.
It was (and probably still is) a notifiable disease.

Elderflower14 · 28/01/2019 22:10

Well I'm now a sobbing mess 😔 😔 😔. Too many memories of losing my ds1 in last night's episode. When she opened the drawer and got his things out I was really crying.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 28/01/2019 22:21

I'm a 1990 baby, one of my best friends is a summer 89 baby. She and her elder sister BOTH had measles despite being vaccinated! It does happen although thankfully very rare.

I really enjoyed last nights ep. I like the split of midwifery and other issues affecting the community and medical practice. I think we've maybe had a few episodes downplaying the midwifery because the next ep looks to be abortion focused. That will probably kick start a midwifery/pregnancy heavy plot arc. They've set up a snapshot of the time, the attitudes, the health service and now they're going to drop a bomb on it, as it were.

Also agree that we need a young man about the place; I wish the dentist would come back and sweep Trixie off her feet, although hopefully Tom the plank stays away a bit longer!

I also quite like the Turners Blush. I just don't get the hate, they're nice! My least favourite was Sister Evangelina and they obligingly killed her off. Sister Hilda has quickly become a favourite! I'd love to see more of her back story. It's nice to see Valerie become more three dimensional, too.

Of course @winterholiday well spotted. I didn't make the connection with the fights but loved the nod to the mods and rockers

@elderflower14 FlowersFlowers so much love to you x

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 28/01/2019 22:54

@elderflower14 Flowers that must have been a very raw scene to watch. xxx

Elderflower14 · 28/01/2019 22:58

Thank you. He was born prematurely but I had still got a few bits. The upshot is that after watching I've looked online and found a rose with his name which I'm going to buy... 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙 💙

Flowers for you, Elderflower14

Does anyone actually listen to Vanessa? I'd be tempted to slip in something outrageous to see if anyone noticed.

Clionba · 29/01/2019 07:23

Good thinking, Saturday! At first, she was the voice of the older Jenny, but now Jenny's left, it's just become a generalised platitude, like you'd get stencilled onto walls or written on driftwood......

WhitherShallIWander · 29/01/2019 07:32

I remember having chicken pox. And my mum says I’ve had mumps. I’m 66 baby.

WhitherShallIWander · 29/01/2019 07:35

Anyone know where I can watch series 6 & 7 as not on Netflix?

Helen George’s voice is quite similar & midwives & nurses were upper middle class so I think it’s about right.

nervousbreakdown · 29/01/2019 07:36

I admit I don’t usually listen (to Vanessa) but this week she said something about looking for light , that it’s not gone or something , and I ended up sobbing - hit a nerve . Don’t usually listen though !!

nervousbreakdown · 29/01/2019 07:36

You can buy series 6 and 7 on YouTube but costs a fortune ie £13.99 each .

Rockbird · 29/01/2019 07:45

WhitherShallIWander I've PM'd you. Smile

glamorousgrandmother · 29/01/2019 08:04

Sister Evangelina

I liked her. She had a very interesting back story in the books.

WhitherShallIWander · 29/01/2019 08:14

Thank you Rockbird

MrsFionaCharming · 29/01/2019 09:48

I listened to Vanessa this week, and her talk started with something like “we can choose happiness”, which seemed really insensitive over the shot of the bereaved mother - she can’t just “choose” to be happy!

Highfever · 29/01/2019 10:44

They say it is set in the spring of 1964. It was interesting to see the cleft palate baby. An ex was born only a few years later so can imagine how his mum must have felt now.

5foot5 · 29/01/2019 13:22

I was born in 1962. I am pretty sure my Mum took me for all the vaccines that were available at the time but measles wasn't one of them.

I had all the spots (chickenpox, measles and German measles) before I started school. I don't think I was particularly ill with any of them thankfully.

I also had mumps at 10, which I remember hurting for a day or two but after that I didn't feel unwell.

Roomba · 29/01/2019 20:13

My uncle was born with a cleft lip and palate in the early 60s. Sadly he died aged two months. The coroner said it was due to an infection, possibly after he had aspirated milk due to his condition. My grandmother never spoke about him, but it must have been awful for her.

elliejjtiny · 29/01/2019 23:09

That's so sad Roomba. Makes me feel very thankful for medical advances.

sixnearlyseven · 29/01/2019 23:34

My mother in law was born with a cleft palate in 1953, watching this gave me an insight how her mum must have felt

Bittermints · 30/01/2019 06:30

I mentioned earlier in the thread that series 6 and 7 are available to stream on Amazon. Not too expensive if you have Prime. I took the free trial month.
