Anyone watching?

OP posts:
TheZeppo · 13/11/2018 21:39

And, if I’m really lucky, wolfing down a sandwich in the three minutes I actually get for lunch.

staydazzling · 13/11/2018 21:41

is it just me who is astounded by how punitive the uniform rules are ? talk about cutting off your nose Hmm if a henry of the world came willingly into my classroom id glue them to the chair not turn them away....over a hoodie ,madness

ilovesooty · 13/11/2018 21:41

They can ask. I suppose if it's an academy they can actually make them - for the derisory money mentioned. I remember being involved in the battle to a right not to supervise during lunch breaks.

starrynight19 · 13/11/2018 21:46

Sadly Ilovesooty yes as all the other staff who would have done it aren’t funded by the school anymore. Sad

Castle999 · 13/11/2018 22:13

Everyone in the area knows that this school is in a downward spiral.
Hard to turn it around.

ds is now complaining that he doesn't get lollipops and £100.

Castle999 · 13/11/2018 22:15

He is currently texting all his friends who moved from Marlwood to Castle. Essentially one school has gained from the misery of another school.

MissEliza · 13/11/2018 22:29

The head teacher seemed very caring but not tough enough. The conversation with Henry was a bit cringeworthy. There was no respect at all. Mind you if you turned up in a North Face hoody at either of my dc's secondary schools and refused to take it off, the school would be straight on the phone to the parents. Who lets their child go to school like that anyway?

letstalk2000 · 13/11/2018 22:37

The more I see of this programme I become more convinced about the total infallibility of Comprehensive Schools..

The head suggests the removing of support staff has caused the school to become in places an anarchy. This being exampled by year 7 boys having filmed fights, swearing at cover teachers.

The standards of behaviour are because of the moral decline in discipline standards and have nothing to do with cuts in support staff.

The school should be able to exclude permanently the 25 persistent trouble causes without ensure from OFSTED.

However, the goings on at Marlwood School reinforce why there should be educational separation at 11 or 13 years of age.

letstalk2000 · 13/11/2018 22:38

Censure from Ofsted.

eddiemairswife · 13/11/2018 22:43

I used to have a battle with my son over wearing trainers. School insisted on black shoes; he insisted on black trainers. I bought him black shoes; he 'lost' them. In the 6th form, when they didn't have to wear uniform, he always wore uniform, but still wore black trainers.

ScoobyGangMember · 13/11/2018 23:02

I missed last week's episode. Does each episode feature a different school from the same MAT?

PawneeParksDept · 13/11/2018 23:45

Not sure what to say really about tonight's - very grim, surely the school will close or reopen with a new name and uniform

I felt very sorry for the studious boys in Politics Club, all the children deserve more it goes without saying, but these boys are particularly suffering as they are able boys in a failing school

PawneeParksDept · 13/11/2018 23:46

@ScoobyGangMember yes

ScoobyGangMember · 13/11/2018 23:50

Thanks. Very depressing.

ASauvignonADay · 14/11/2018 07:07

In reality they probably can't afford it. At £15000 per PEX (in our LA at least) that'd cost them £375000!

Castle999 · 14/11/2018 08:16

If they permanently excluded these pupils they would not have a functioning school. They need the money.

They also filmed at Mangotsfield School. As far as I know the film crew only covered three schools. This is a list of the trust schools.

CSET SCHOOLS
Charfield Primary School
Downend School
Lyde Green Primary School
Mangotsfield School
Marlwood School
Severn Beach Primary School
The Castle School

This! Surely the staff has better things to do?

MissEliza · 14/11/2018 10:00

There's a myth that schools in special measures will get extra support. It's a crock of shit that Ofsted can give schools that label and just walk away while the school descends into a downward spiral. Looking at the culture of non attendance and poor uniform, I don't think the parents are particularly supportive. I feel sorry for the staff and the pupils who want to do well,

The80sweregreat · 14/11/2018 10:04

Its certainly an eye opener and the open day last year must have been so awkward to address as the school was in special measures.
The Head was great, but the staff looked so demoralised and so many of them leaving all at once must have been a huge blow.
Some of the children obviously wanted to learn and behave - its always the minority that make it bad for everyone else.
I'm so pleased that my two are not at school anymore - they went to a fairly decent comp, but i'm sure lots of things went on that you dont hear about and it certainly wasnt always perfect. Must be such a tough job all round.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/11/2018 10:33

I've just watched the second one.

I really feel for the teachers they all looked like they had given up. They all looked really ill if I'm honest.

The head, well he seemed like a nice bloke but he just skirted round the issues. Seems to be hoping we'd feel sorry for him and the dilemma he was in , in time to be able to avoid answering the questions.

That Henry, well his mum seemed nice but she didn't appear to hold him responsible for his actions as much as you'd expect.

They ended up excluding him for a period of time anyway so all those lessons he disrupted, well if he'd have been excluded and dealt with befire then , then may be the other kids and the teachers wouldn't have had to put up with the crap.

As for the comment about the single mum of 5 , well, whereas the kid was a pain in the arse, it sounded like they expected no better due to the circumstances.

I was truly shocked at the behaviour of alot of the kids tbh. Felt awful for those who appeared to walking around and sitting quietly in lessons . They seemed to be the minority really and they deserved sone recognition for hanging on there and not join in the nonsense cos I think it must seem an almost fruitless task bothering to behave there.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/11/2018 10:40

And as for that smug piece of shit well....

He weekend almost be enjoying watching people jump through hoops to achieve the impossible.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/11/2018 10:40

Seemed to

Stupid autocorrect

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 14/11/2018 10:41

I do think that the head was trying to use methods and approaches that simply won't work with that demographic, and would be very demoralising to the kids that were playing by the rules. Some of those kids (and parents) needed a good bollocking amongst the support they were getting from school - it was only the threat of the year 7 boy's mum having to get him to a different school that got her on board.

The attitudes from the parents who turned up to the parent forum were a country mile away from those of the parents with pupils at risk of exclusion.

PurpleDaisies · 14/11/2018 10:42

I do think that the head was trying to use methods and approaches that simply won't work with that demographic

What sorts of things do you mean?

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 14/11/2018 10:43

And what was really interesting was how ineffective and crap the CEO was as a leader. He clearly thought of the Schools and the Trust as two separate organisations. We saw no serious attempt at supporting either of the schools, and the CEO was basically, these are not my problems to solve. The scenes we saw of the CEO meetings suggested crap governance.
