BBC4: Anyone watching? It's so relaxing, feel like I'm on the train.

More importantly, has anyone been on it?

I'm loving it, but I am a big fan of all the 'slow' programmes.

Never been to Australia yet though!

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 22:05

I haven't either IAm, I like the way they put the facts in every so often too.

Got bored after ten minutes. Ws it just silence for the whole programme?

mnahmnah · 28/10/2018 22:08

It’s like mindfulness. DM put it on. Glad she did. I watched the canal boat and the dog sled programmes too. Very soothing.

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 22:10

🤣

It's not action packed, definitely. They put up info/stats about the places they're passing through. I think you're meant to feel you're on the train.

It's relaxed me so much I'm half asleep.

3 hours of it! Bliss

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 28/10/2018 22:30

I hope they do more like it.

mnahmnah · 28/10/2018 22:32

I’d have to draw the line at a cross-channel ferry 😂

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 22:37

That would only take half an hour anyway wouldn't it @mnahmnah 😁

The Irish or North seas would be interesting too, but not very relaxing with their fierce storms (!).

Yes it was great and lots of interesting facts. Never been to Australia. You don't get to see much of the Northern Territories usually.

EBearhug · 29/10/2018 01:53

I've been on it, but it only went as far as Alice Springs back then.

I hadn't realised the programme was more than an hour when I started watching it.

roundthehorn · 29/10/2018 02:00

Should be Australia's Greatest Train Robbery! Around $5k per couple for two nights on the train, One Way only!

AviatorShades · 29/10/2018 08:46

roundthehorn but they feed you too?...crocodile steak, anyone? Actually, I've had one, sortov like a swordfish steak iirc...

i found it interestingSmile

Absolutely loved it. So relaxing and immersive.

Almost as good as the rural Yorkshire bus.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 29/10/2018 15:31

DH and I did a train trip between Perth and Adelaide which went across the Nullabor Desert. It was fascinating and such a HUGE desert, Australian distances are mind-blowing for someone from Ireland. We stopped at a small town that was almost deserted, I can't remember the name, the train used it to change crews I think. We also stopped at Kalgoorlie, which remains the weirdest place I've ever been to.

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 29/10/2018 15:40

Those scary outback places do fill me with fear- doesn't help I Watched Wolf Creek fairly recently.

I did that by bus... It is a very long way.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 29/10/2018 19:52

How long was it by bus EBearhug? We were on the train for two nights but not quite a full day at the start or finish, so probably slightly over 48 hours in total. We had a cabin and meals were included (which were very rich considering that we didn't have much opportunity to work it off). I didn't sleep very well with the motion of the train, but at least I was lying down and had an ensuite loo and shower, it must have been a real test of endurance in the economy section where they just had a reclining seat, airline-style.

EBearhug · 29/10/2018 22:09

2 1/2 days, I think. There were only about 7 of us on the bus, so at least we could stretch across seats to sleep. We stopped at a roadside cafe about halfway along, so we got to stretch our legs for an hour. I remember thinking, you just can't travel that far in Britain without the landscape changing, but it was all the same for all that time.

Mind you, I was getting bored with hours of olive groves from the train in south West Spain this June. We are spoilt for scenery in Britain.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/10/2018 22:23

Pumpkinspice, I lived in Kalgoorlie!

VivaDixie · 29/10/2018 22:27

We watched it for about an hour and a half I think. We were absolutely mesmerised! I even put down my phone Wink it was so soothing to watch

DH travelled up the west coast of Australia through similar terrain. It took him 2 and a half days

Avegemitesandwich · 29/10/2018 22:28

We watched this last night! I was like 'WTF?' but it was actually really relaxing to watch.

PumpkinSpiceAmericanoNoSugar · 29/10/2018 22:41

Were you working in the mine Brillo? I had never imagined that a hole in the ground could be that big, it was mind boggling. Was it as odd to live there as it was to visit? Our tour guide, who was a resident, thought it was a wonderful town, he described the town hall as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, in his opinion. Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/10/2018 22:49

No, I worked in the pubs.
It's, different, completely nuts but a lot of fun, I had so many friends there, and loved it, BUT as a temporary thing in my early 20's, permanently, no way.
The main street is kind of impressive, given its a town in the middle of nowhere, I went to loads of tiny outback towns though and after those Kal is huge!
The Superpit is impressive, my then BF worked there, and other minesites, although tbf most of the town do.

I'd love to go back and see how it's changed in almost 20yrs.

Almost as good as the rural Yorkshire bus.

What was that one and is it still available, do you know? Sounds amazing!
