Anyone watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?

I'm watching this today, only got to episode 2 so far but loving it. It's deliciously dark, quite a few British actors in it, very feminist. The credits are awesome too - really pulpy.

Thoughts, anyone?

I only saw the advert today and liked the look of it. Is it aimed at teens?

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 27/10/2018 16:19

We watched the first two episodes last night. Looks like it might be pretty good.

motherofjiggly · 27/10/2018 17:17

Older teenagers probably okay, I wouldn't recommend it for younger teens. I'm in my thirties and I don't feel too old for it!

We’re on episode 4 - really enjoying it so far. It’s quite dark with some scary bit - definitely not for young teens!

I can’t work out what era it’s set in - it seems really sixties or seventies from the clothes and cars etc, but didn’t Ambrose have a laptop? And they talked about fast zombies released in recent years, and mentioned Cronenberg’s The Fly...

Is it on Uk Netflix? I couldn’t find it.

Cherries101 · 28/10/2018 11:39

I absolutely love it. The acting of the cast is stellar — I really hope it gets nominated for something.

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 28/10/2018 13:22

Yes definitely on U.K. Netflix.

JellyBears · 28/10/2018 14:40

Yeah it’s up now haha when I looked the other day it wasn’t there yet.

IStandWithPosie · 31/10/2018 10:49

I was looking forward to this after hearing it was very feminist. But the male gaze is strong in this show! Episode one, naked 15 year old girl climbing out of bathtub. I won’t post spoilers for any further epsiode but I’m up to epsiode 4 and they have her naked or being stripped in every one. Really disappointed.

UnimaginativeUsername · 31/10/2018 10:57

I’m finding the feminism superficial and painfully ‘woke’ (in that irritating for display, rather than genuine, way) really. And as @IStandWithPosie says, Sabrina’s activism at school doesn’t really translate into the rest of the plot well.

IStandWithPosie · 31/10/2018 11:23

Totally agree unimaginative. It’s lip service.

UnimaginativeUsername · 31/10/2018 12:04

I think I was most annoyed that it appears to be fashionable and quite cynical lip service rather than anything genuine.

I think I’d like a story that’s intrinsically feminist, rather than a more standard tale with some clunky feminist activism sub plots chucked on the top to attract lots of attention and applause on social media. And even in those sub-plots she’s often being manipulated by someone (on behalf of a man) or seeking help from a more knowledgeable man to achieve her aims.

UnimaginativeUsername · 31/10/2018 12:05

However, I think aesthetically it looks wonderful.

dudsville · 31/10/2018 18:04

I'm watching this and absolutely loving it! I think it's the new Buffy. Strong women characters. And I suspect Sabrina will bring down the dark lord. Really enjoying the set as ell, it's based on a comic set in the 40's or 50's hence the dated era. Love that to!

IStandWithPosie · 01/11/2018 18:59

For anyone who loved the original series, I’ve just seen an advert saying it’s coming to 4 music!

speakout · 01/11/2018 21:28

I've just finished all 10 episodes. Yes it's for teenagers, - my teen DD suggested I watch it.
It was entertaining, does not stand up to analysis or scrutiny- it's a kids show.

Enb76 · 02/11/2018 09:48

I was impressed with the similarity of looks of the new Sabrina to the Melissa Joan Hart version.

I think the acting is generally wooden but I did binge watch the whole series.

Winterfellwonderland · 03/11/2018 00:41

I'm so confused.......... The teacher lady what's her motive is she after Sabrina? Why is she following her around? And father blackwood what's his motive? Why are they so desperate to get her to the magic school?

IStandWithPosie · 03/11/2018 01:43

Miss wardwell is acting for the dark lord. He wants Sabrina’s soul. It’s miss wardwells job to convince Sabrina to undergo her dark baptism so she will belong to the dark lord. I think all witches have to belong to him and her father promised her soul to the dark lord when she was born in return for him being allowed to marry a mortal.

What I don’t get is, why aunt Hilda is English and who is cousin ambrose if he isn’t Hilda or Zeldas child? But he is also English. Confused

SD1978 · 03/11/2018 02:13

Acting is a bit meh. The overuse of filtered fuzzy camera work is meh. The inability to decide between dark comedy and drama, and kinda failing at both is a bit meh. The constant whining of the bloke under house arrest. The two aunts are ok. The show is ok. Not blown away.

WellThisIsShit · 03/11/2018 02:43

Yes, who is cousin ambrose if he isn’t Hilda or Zeldas child? And if he’s not the child of either of them, what is he doing in their house? Very confusing!

Winterfellwonderland · 03/11/2018 06:20

Ambrose is on house arrest

SD1978 · 03/11/2018 09:06

I'm not too sure about there being strong females- here is to an extent, but ultimately, they are all ruled by the high priest (man who makes the rules) and Satan (man figure who makes all the rules) and they all subjicate themselves to both of them. The 'Queen' episode? Trying not to give it away. Ultimately, ended with a female losing.

li1972 · 03/11/2018 09:15

I'm enjoying it so far... only on episode 3. Yes there are holes and questions, but so far it's dark and entertaining (if I don't look too hard!).

Winterfellwonderland · 03/11/2018 11:49

I like the English connection because the witches at Salem were English etc
