Anyone been watching this?

yes I am. I am originally from Redcar. Was criticised by family and her friends for saying I thought it was ridiculous for kaitlyn"s mother to spend £600 on a prom dress. 😁

RandomMess · 14/09/2018 20:19

From that area originally. Very interesting to watch sadly the poverty trap still exists Sad

Lifeisdinky · 14/09/2018 20:26

No connection with Redcar but really enjoying the programme. I also wasn't sure about the £600 dress, but it was what they both wanted , she had sq Ed the money so why not.
Like so many places the main ambition of the young seems to be to leave the town, sad but the grass always looks greener on the other side I suppose

Lifeisdinky · 14/09/2018 20:28

Should have read saved the money -

salsamummy · 14/09/2018 20:49

I have friends and family who live there and have very good lifestyles. I personally couldn't wait to leave at 18 and moved to California.

Petalflowers · 14/09/2018 20:51

Watched some of it yesterday. There was an interesting history of the town at the beginning. It’s good to,see community clubs and schemes helping the youngsters in the town.

5foot5 · 14/09/2018 21:00

I had to ask DD if I had been really tight because I spent about £60 on her prom dress and thought I had pushed the boat out!

I find myself really rooting for all these kids - even Jamie.

I love the 80's soundtrack and the beach.

PickAChew · 18/09/2018 00:11

I'd forgotten about this. Feels like a month since dh and I sniggered at the BBC pronunciation of Redcar in the trailer.

Nettletheelf · 18/09/2018 20:48

The mentors trying to help Jamie put most of us to shame. Love this programme. It’s not patronising, it doesn’t sneer at its subjects and it’s full of hope. This is why the BBC licence fee is good value for money; ITV would sooner spend the money on a crap quiz hosted by Holly Willoughby.

EuphoricNight · 19/09/2018 14:16

It seems to focus more on Jamie who is from Grangetown which is a very deprived area but not actually Redcar.

Like most places Redcar has its poorer people but it also has lots of brand new expensive housing developments, full of huge houses. Most drives in the new build areas have 2 brand new flash cars on the drive.

It should be been called Grim Grangetown, it doesn't reflect the Redcar I see when I visit family.

salsamummy · 19/09/2018 17:36

I agree EuphoricNight. I have friends and family who live on the new developments and have long haul holidays, good jobs and 2 cars. Though I had a comment from a family member that we were all rich down South. lol I wish!

MorrisZapp · 19/09/2018 17:38

It's such a brilliant show. How is Redcar meant to be pronounced?

RandomMess · 19/09/2018 17:43

Hmmm

Red "K"

As in kicking "k"

EuphoricNight · 19/09/2018 17:56

It's just pronounced Red-car. Just as spelt. Although people on the TV when talking about the steel works seemed to say Red-ker.

RandomMess · 19/09/2018 17:59

I'm Teesside born and bred and have never called it Red-Car...

EuphoricNight · 19/09/2018 18:06

There must be people walking round saying it different ways then Smile.
I went to school there years ago. Family and friends who still live there say Red-car. Maybe people who love in Boro or Grangetown say Red-ker?
Anyway. I hope they dont focus on loser Jamie again next episode.

EuphoricNight · 19/09/2018 18:06

Live*

QforCucumber · 19/09/2018 18:08

Im just outside Boro and say redcar, but dm and family all say red kuh.
Not watched it - may have to catch up.

RandomMess · 19/09/2018 18:10

Aspiring working class = Redcar

Everyone with the local dialect = Redker

Grin

Bit like 'artlepool versus Hartlepool...

When my southerner DH says Newcarstle.. Hmm

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/09/2018 18:13

I'm from the NE, but not that near and I'd say Red-K.
It looks all wrong written down but others obviously know.

QforCucumber · 19/09/2018 18:16

I'm saying it over and over out loud now and can't work out which one i actually do say in everyday life!

salsamummy · 19/09/2018 18:16

yes REDKA :-)

EuphoricNight · 19/09/2018 18:23

Random it's nothing to do with aspiring working class, I was brought up there, my family and friends still live there it's definitely Red-car.

Dialect wise I do think Grangetown and beyond up to Billingham it's probabky Redker.

Redcar, marske up to Loftus everyone says car. More of a townie v locals thing maybe.

QforCucumber · 19/09/2018 18:28

Ooo euphoric i find the opposite, dm and family live loftus/skelton/Guisborough and say ka. I'm now other side of middlesbrough (Acklam area) and say car....i think? (Dp says if i ever say lets go to the beach i refer to redka but otherwise say car)
