I'm finding Rebecca annoying. I haven't read the book so have no idea if she's meant to be.

She’s not meant to be a likeable character

MrsBosh · 02/09/2018 21:23

She's very pretty but looks too made up. Not a fan so far!

MrsChollySawcutt · 02/09/2018 21:29

Becky Sharp is meant to be an I likeable character - a chancer, a user and a social climber.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 02/09/2018 21:31

I dislike her character.

RandomlyChosenName · 02/09/2018 21:33

How closely is it following the book (I haven't read it). For some reason, I feel like it might not be following it very closely?

Firenight · 02/09/2018 21:34

Will be watching on catch up but indeed - she isn’t a very nice person.

Pebblespony · 02/09/2018 21:34

She's supposed to be an anti-hero.

bookworm14 · 02/09/2018 21:34

She is not meant to be likeable. However this adaptation feels too shiny and chocolate-boxy. They don’t look like believable early-19th-century people.

Pebblespony · 02/09/2018 21:37

I think you have a good point bookworm. On a different topic, I thought the perfume ad for Dior during the break was a bit like a pisstake of a perfume ad.

JaneJeffer · 02/09/2018 21:40

There isn't much depth to it.

OP posts:
Knittedfairies · 02/09/2018 21:41

I was so looking forward to this, but am not impressed - so far.

oooompa · 02/09/2018 21:43

@Pebblespony I found it strange ITV did an announcement for it Hmm

I'm trying to find out who the lady singing is but IMDB isn't helping. She looks so familiar!

rookiemere · 02/09/2018 21:50

Not enjoying so far, but will keep going.

SilverHairedCat · 02/09/2018 21:51

It's following the book quite well, but her hair colour is seriously irritating me. It's all wrong.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 02/09/2018 21:51

I’m sticking with Bodyguard. I won’t be tuning in again. I can’t stand it. She’s annoying and I don’t care for any of the characters.

CoolCarrie · 02/09/2018 21:52

Becky Sharp is the first anti hero in literature. You aren’t meant to like her, you are meant to admire her cheek and brass neck, she is a cheeky fucker in mumsnet language, she gets her way in a male dominated society.

AuroraFloyd · 02/09/2018 21:55

I'm enjoying it.

CourageCamille · 02/09/2018 21:57

Vanity Fair never works on screen because the narrator is such a big part of the book, talking to the reader and dropping hints and clues and insights that just can't be done on film.

Scabetty · 02/09/2018 21:58

I am liking it. It’s not following the traditional period drama format I agree but liking the looks to camera from Becky as she manipulates.

ladybird69 · 02/09/2018 22:19

I’m forcing myself to watch it, but the film version with Reece Witherspoon and James Purefoy is so much better. This seems very flat and no chemistry 🙁
Bit like BBC pride and prejudice versus the Hollywood version! No contest.

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2018 22:29

Pile of cheap looking, badly acted shite. Grin

Firenight · 02/09/2018 23:02

I really liked it.

WhipItGood · 02/09/2018 23:09

It seemed too modern and informal. Not sure I’m going to last the distance on this one.

ChangoMutney · 02/09/2018 23:27

This is just just showing how brilliant the BBC are at period drama.

senua · 03/09/2018 00:00

On a different topic, I thought the perfume ad for Dior during the break was a bit like a pisstake of a perfume ad.
It was a weird advert. I'm now convinced that JOY smells of swimming pool.

I'm reserving judgement on VF. So far, it's not as funny as the book.
