Are congratulations in order then what ? Grin

whatnextfred · 14/07/2018 09:28

Not exactly. I told him to ask me when he wasn't pissed. And totally deflected when he asked again this morning. Am in shock to be honest. I'm recently divorced and he always said he doesn't believe in marriage. Haven't told anyone else you guys are my outlet this morning Grin

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2018 09:35

Oh dear I have my first holiday hangover Sad

We went out for dinner last night and the Isner/Anderson match was still going on. When it eventually finished we went to the bar to watch the Rafa/Novak match which went on until just after midnight here.

It was really good watching the match with Spanish rafa fans - they kept shouting vamos Rafa!

Not sure if I can face any more time in the bar today (too much red wine last night) but want to see the end of the match. Hopefully Rafa can pull it back but Djokovic was looking strong.

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2018 09:39

Congratulations whatnext

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2018 10:00

Fizzy you have to go back for hair if the dog. And to see the rest of Rafa.

what in vino veritas. it's make your mind up time Grin

Really hope Rafa can come back today and that DM doesn't need help with her emails in the middle of it this time!

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2018 10:01

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2018 10:19

I do want to see the rest of the match Jane but not sure if I can face hair of the dog Envy

My DH has pointed out that soft drinks are available!

Still can’t believe how long the Isner/Anderson match went in for.

I think they do need to look into possibility of introducing tie breaks in the 5th set - Kevin Anderson said they should be introduced at say 12 all for the health of players. I really don’t know how they physically managed to play for so long.

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2018 10:31

But a tie-break could also go on forever!

Raahh · 14/07/2018 10:40

what Wow!! Bet that came as a shockGrin

It's a one set shoot out as far as Rafa is concerned, so he really needs to be totally focused when he comes back out.
My heart says Rafa, but my gut feeling is that Djok has found his mojo at just the wrong time(for Rafa fans!).

It's also going to be under the roof, I imagine, since , they will finish the match with the same conditions they started it, apparently.

Now, I don't get that. What if the match had been played outdoors yesterday, and today it is raining- they would be forced to finish under different conditions to those they started under. So, I don't really see why they can't just play outdoors.

Private hope you are not too tired today.

Fizzy Oh dear. Flowers. We'll try to keep the noise down . Grin

what You don't sound too keen..............

Fizzy Wine Get it down!!

I think Rafa & Novak can choose whether to play under the roof or not.

whatnextfred · 14/07/2018 10:45

I found it very hard not to say yes. It was just so far from left field! He Always said marriage is archaic and not for him etc and I always said never again.... he's making me rethink though!

Raahh · 14/07/2018 10:47

Jane they can't let things go on as they did yesterday. I'd hate to see a tie break brought in at 6 all, but yes, maybe 10/12 in the 5th, because it must be physically and mentally draining for the players to just keep carrying.

The common factor of the really long matches is John Isner. Get rid of him, and maybe it won't happen againGrin.

Raahh · 14/07/2018 10:50

magi I hope they can- it was the Wimbledon fb page that was suggesting it had to start under the roof.

I don't feel like like doing anything today. I suppose I should get some shopping in.

Morning all - hope you're all well! whatnextfred lovely news about the proposal!! Didn't he get you Wimbledon tickets for your birthday? Sounds like excellent marriage material to me!!

I'm still reeling from yesterday tbh. That first match was just... Oh god. I've read the thread and it made me laugh so much because you all seemed to go through all the same emotions as we did sitting there. The third set was actually some decent (ish) tennis... but it just looked so inevitable that it was going to go to 5... and when it did, oh boy. I know I m always complaining about people not making the most of being there, having tickets, they should be enjoying it etc. But we ended up going out for afternoon tea at something like 6-7 - we'd never normally leave a match in the middle, but we were just so sick of the sight of them even by then! I don't blame the players in any way (well maybe Isner) but it was just a terrible situation for everyone. We came back for the final 195 games, or whatever it was and we were just delirious, basically. All the points just looked the same - massive serve, massive groundies, maybe the odd half-volley, etc. The worst bit was when it started raining because if they'd gone off then God knows what would have happened and everyone was so edgy, just dreading Rafa-Novak not coming on at all.

Anyway. When they did come on, it was literally the best moment I've ever seen on a tennis court. Honestly. The cheers that went up when their names were put on the board was just something else. We'd had two giant servebots bashing balls at each other, looking like dishevelled zombies, basically, with Kevin staggering over the line, no way to win a match, I really felt for him. Then Rafa and Novak came out, box fresh, absolutely wired and up for it, and everyone was going nuts, it was fecking amazing.

From the first point, they just seemed like wizards or superheroes or something - honestly, the creativity, variety, tactics, etc - it was just jaw-dropping, especially in comparison with the first match. Everyone was marvelling at it: "this is real tennis, now you're talking" etc. Novak straight backed, chest out, doing some light yoga while waiting to receive serve, such precise shots finding all the corners and lines. Rafa fist pumping and vamos-ing all over the place, hitting crazy inside-out forehands and drop shots. Talk about finesse - he's got it all, I'd never fully realised how much until yesterday. Wow. He hit this amazing overhead at one stage - almost with his back to the net - I need to see it on the replay but I was just laughing, it was so good.

I feel gutted and robbed that we couldn't see the end of that match - I was devastated last night really, but this morn I just feel so glad to have seen those three sets. And a little bit completely in love with them both.

PrivateParkin · 14/07/2018 11:06

Omg, sorry for the absolute essay Blush

Raahh I like your solution for long final sets: banning Isner Grin

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2018 11:13

Sounds amazing Private. I can imagine the relief when the first match ended!

I love Gordon Reid's voice.

PrivateParkin · 14/07/2018 11:16

PPS I don't really think Kev is a servebot. I actually really like him, and he has got a lot more to his game than that. And I feel for him because that's a crappy way to win and obviously massively undermines any chance he might have had in the final. I've not seen his post-match interview yet so am going to go and look that up.

The crowd was really behind him btw - there were a few American fans there but the crowd was mainly pro-Kevin. Hope he can give a good account of himself tomorrow.

Fizzywinegum · 14/07/2018 11:51

Sounds like an amazing day Parkin - brilliant description. Watching it on the telly was amazing but actually being there must have beeen something else - wow.

DH said that I was shouting Vamos Rafa along with this old Spanish guy last night Blush

kazzaD66 · 14/07/2018 11:58

Glad you had a good day Parkin Now you can recover in front of the tv with several large Pimms and pray for the right results Wink

BagelGoesWalking · 14/07/2018 11:59

Loved reading about your day - fantastic! Djokovic was looking disturbingly gold last night and Rafa missed a few that he usually never would.

I agree that it's a bit rough on the ladies to not know when they're going on, it could easily take more than an hour!

MirandaWest · 14/07/2018 12:10

I am obviously hoping the match goes on longer than an hour (unless Nadal wins the next two sets 6-0 6-0)

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 14/07/2018 12:11

That was great to read private, very illuminating. Smile
What a marathon!
I agree, after ten or twelve games in the 5th set, go for a tiebreak.
Looking forward to the conclusion of D & N's match.

whatnextfred usually I would say if you are not ready don't do it, but I don't know you or your situation. Flowers

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 14/07/2018 12:34

Watching the wheelchair tennis which is super exciting! But oh my god - Stop with the chanting already!

Got to say I prefer nice and quiet Centre Court.

Raahh · 14/07/2018 12:40

private that sounds like an amazing day. It's very different seing players 'in the flesh' -I don't think you get the real impression of just how powerful and fast some of the play is.

I'm glad you think Anderson is more than just a serve- he must be, really, wouldn't have got this far otherwise. Same as Raonic- it was clear once Kevin got a into a rally, that he would win it- whereas John seemed to very much rely on his serve to get him out of (umpteen) 0-30 holes Grin.

Hewitt and Reid have just won the wheelchair doubles, so that's good.

Really hope Rafa can do it.

Yes definitely Raahh - I'd seen Djokovic play a couple of times before, but never Rafa. It was amazing.

kazza I like your Pimm's/TV/couch idea - sounds like a plan.
