Two families swap lives for a week. Total opposites in the life styles

the richest 10% and a family who live on the breadline

I'm watching this now - anyone else?

BeachyUmbrella · 23/05/2018 21:50

Yes, it's a nice one..... nice White House!

HollowTalk · 23/05/2018 21:58

I was watching and thought "I bet both women are on MN." It would be so interesting to know if they are!

StarUtopia · 23/05/2018 22:02

Is it just me, or do other people watch this and think...jeeez....the 'poor' people are on substantially more than me a week?

Talk about making you feel miserable!

Just watched tonight's programme and wished we could have £1700 income a month - never mind disposable income a week!! How the other half live eh!

HollowTalk · 23/05/2018 22:12

I wonder about that, StarUtopia. That couple owned their house (albeit on a mortgage) - it would be more interesting if they were renting.

I do think if you've got £1,700 per week spare, you should be saving an awful lot of that. You never know what lies ahead.

Xenia · 23/05/2018 22:17

I just watched the clip on the lnk above - from that it looksl ike we have the same old story - marry young and have children and you don't have money. Get really good qualifications most people cannot achieve (it looks like the man is a barrister) and you earn more. So pretty much what most people have said to their chidlren in the Uk since the 1800s really. The richer family are surprised the other famly has a TV double the size they do and games consoles in the bed rooms and the poorer family are the usual over weight but that's just how it goes.

I will watch with interest when I have time tomorrow.

I think it's a good programme and it helps us all see how other people live and it's fairly kindly done. I hope one of the women tonight out earns her husband and has a good career. Living in hope here.....

HollowTalk · 23/05/2018 22:55

Xenia, in the rich family tonight, both parents were barristers. The mum had breast cancer recently and felt her job contributed, so she stopped work for a while.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 00:30

Well watch tomorrow night when the husband is out at the pub and I'm watching the baby toddler small child

ConferenceBores · 24/05/2018 11:20

it's easier to be resilient when you're not struggling daily with worry over bills - starting your own dog boarding/dog day care business after you've given up as a barrister is admirable, but her risk was clearly bounded by having a high earning spouse.

I'm a bit 'pur-lease' about the rich mum having found being on the estate more restful, but I do agree that some wealthy areas can be very unfriendly if your family doesn't fit for some reason.

Xenia · 24/05/2018 12:41

I still haven't wotched it - too busy earning a crust to support the children. Sorry about her breast cance but a pity that yet again when you ahve two equal pouses - like the earlier 2 vets couples it always seems to be surprise surprise the women who give up the hard won career, never the men!

MyDcAreMarvel · 24/05/2018 12:52

It was the woman who became sick!

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 12:56

I wonder sometimes Xenia if you realise how your posts read or if it is deliberately meant; maybe just a sense of humour failure in text

Anyway, ache felt like the career wasn't helping her recovery so she left it. Nothing sexist about that, It would hardly be appropriate for the husband to give up work after his wife got sick would it??

Xenia · 24/05/2018 12:59

I haven't seen the programme and as I said I am sorry she had cancer. It must be horrible for her. However time after time the TV show is presenting us with women not earning as much as men. they could pick some more equal couples but choose not to do so and that's a pity as everyone is going to think at all income levels men earn and women serve male needs at home.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 13:07

Who is the all who are thinking that?? I live in a working class area, lots of SAHM's, clearly me included, and even I don't think men ran ascend women serve (ha, in his dreams!!).

I do get your point that they could deliberately seek out a family with a SAHD but the reality is in MANY families the women is involved in the choice to cut or drop hours for the kids.

There was one last series where the mum didn't job in our for only part as she was much more instrumental in the family business so Dad had them on his own all week?

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/05/2018 14:42

Some ways it is annoying it’s the usual story of mum gives up work and income drops

Fibro is obv bad as well as cancer - but sure the poor Mum could do something to earn extra money as both kids at school

Also the poor family said when had space their kids played outside before school instead of in bedroom on electronics

Why not ban them on school days

Does seem the poorer family’s are usually larger in size - prob down to fresh fruit and veg is more costly then pizza or nuggets and chips

And yes it’s easy to start a new business when hubby is rich and can afford to support you

OP posts:
MyDcAreMarvel · 24/05/2018 15:58

Yes the kids are at school but some days the Mum with fibro can’t even get out of bed. How exactly would you like her to earn money?

ConferenceBores · 24/05/2018 16:03

I hear fibro is a horrible thing as sometimes you look and feel fine, and other times you are totally immobilized with pain, its one of those classic hidden disabilities, isn't it? Own business might be feasible but only if it was something that wasn't time sensitive, hard to think what that could be.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 20:23

Xenia when you watching? We can watch together 😀😀

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 20:56

It's an interesting comparison as botha mom's have had to make work/career changes due to ill health but the income of their partner obviously makes the difference between how painful that adjustment is

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 21:09

It's good there's more focus on the women on this one

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 21:19

I don't understand how they have ask those computer consoles but not got a laptop between then that the kids could use?

Xenia · 24/05/2018 21:23

Sorry I've got distracted on other things and I had a look earlier on sky but wasn't sure I'd found the last episode and watched something else instead and now I've got piles of work coming in. I will see if I can find it and watch it tomorrow afternoon... ah thought it was Thursday tomorrow until just now so actually I might not have time tomorrow but we'll see. I will report back.

One of the key difference in my whole life compared to most people seems to be that I have just about never been ill other than the odd cold (not even had a cold for 18 months now which is a record). If we could bottle what I have we could be billionaires. Nothing is as good as not being ill, not money, not anyway.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 21:35

As someone with a child with complex medical issues, I think we may have a point we actually agree on!!

Us being rich would make me not working easier, I'd be less stressed about tax credits and I'd def not go back to work until he was in full time school / could afford childcare with medical experience.

However no amount of money would have made the baby less ill, the nhs surgeons less amazing, the stupid scar tissue less stupid, the nhs surgeons less amazing an so on...
