Two families swap lives for a week. Total opposites in the life styles

the richest 10% and a family who live on the breadline

got to wonder if psychological constraints aren't behind a lot of earnings issues - now I've had kids, I finally understand the biological drive to have them (resisting a 3rd one here as it is a bad idea for us for many reasons) - it's funny as it didn't really kick in for ages for me, but clearly in my family where people have struggled financially and on this show you can see that people have had that drive to have that one baby too many/early babies and it's overcome their rationality totally.

Xenia · 11/06/2018 15:59

CB, I've always thought so. If you think you are able to achieve a financial goal, set it and then meet it you are much more likely to get there than if you assume you would never manage it. (not that you can't be happy on a low income of course)

RippleEffects · 13/06/2018 21:08

Anyone watching?

I think we need rich school poor school next. About four children from a poorer area school swap for a week with four from a privileged area school. Maybe about year 4 pupils would be good.

ConferenceBores · 14/06/2018 10:31

i love the idea of rich school, poor school, they should also give us details on where the money spent on the state option goes per pupil, and where the money on the private school is spent.

That'd be a fascinating programme - going round the country and comparing 2 contrasting schools in an area.

Xenia · 14/06/2018 15:06

Sounds a good idea. There was a recent one where some very poor performing UK white boys who messed up GCSEs went to the Doon School - Indian "Eton" which was not very fair as you only go there in India if you have a very high IQ and can pay. It was nicely done but most of them dropped out and those who stayed the year did pretty badly in their resit GCSEs.

You could do those comparisons but it's hard to get right. Lots of people in our bit of London swap from private to state for sixth form or vice versa and there are so many different private and state schools you could almost generate the results the programme wants just by picking the schools eg school for not very bright private school children v state grammar Henrietta Barnett or something like that,

It was nice to see update from previous series and how they are trying to better theirselves

I really liked the friendship between the two physics guys, I liked them on the show originally too. Good to see so much positive change for both sets of families

Firstinlastout · 04/12/2018 14:46

Only just caught up with this. The guy from the 'poor' family (physics guy) and his wife have split up now, he's with someone else and never went back to college.

WeAreSailing · 04/12/2018 17:14

Really??!!

purpleme12 · 04/12/2018 19:33

What guy is this? Who's the physics guy?

Firstinlastout · 04/12/2018 22:43

The one who lives in weston super mare. I think they had 6 kids. Had a different accent though, sounded Newcastle but not too sure.

I watched (but missed the start) I've never seen this programme before so wasn't sure exactly the premise. I liked both families and I had a little tear at the end when the 'poor house' family were all cuddling and playing with the baby on the carpet.

I thought both families were really respectful of the other

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 27/12/2018 14:13

I liked both families and cried quite a bit throughout

Dreamscomingtrue · 27/12/2018 20:38

It was a good episode, I come from a working class background, council maisonette, which had no central heating. So felt for the poor family and how pleased they were with the carpets. The baby was scrumptious, it would be interesting to know the back story. Brave to have another child when she’d obviously been through a tough time living in temporary accommodation with the other children. The son was lovely too how respectful he was too his Mum and sisters and how he helped to look after the baby.

rockingthelook · 27/12/2018 20:39

I've seen on other forums people being so critical of the 'poor family', questioning why, when she already had 2 children, did the mother have another child , 3 months old , no cash, no carpets on the floor etc no explanation was given re. the father of the children, but what I will say is that the families were both very nice and respectful to each other. The children of the 'poor' family were very lovely, a credit to their Mum, she also seemed very nice, and in the end when the 'rich'family left, they had carpets fitted for them as a gift. It was an enlightening programme, heart warming and a pleasure to see kindness exists in others

Snowballs4ever · 27/12/2018 21:49

It made me cry a few times! Both families very nice but the mum from the poor family was so positive and upbeat, she was doing a great job for her family in difficult circumstances. So kind for the wealthy family to pay for the carpets (more tears!)

purpleme12 · 28/12/2018 21:27

It's not on catch up :-(

purpleme12 · 28/12/2018 22:51

Found it now. Wasn't with the others!

purpleme12 · 28/12/2018 22:58

Watching on catch up and there's been 3 different sets of adverts in the first 18 minutes!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/12/2018 13:59

Thought I had replied to this

Both families were lovely

DId wonder how rich family made their money esp as from basic council backgrounds

Tho proves it can happen :)

LIKe many why have a 3rd baby when living in temp occomodation - and be homeless does 4yrs

contraception would be my no 1 if in a relationship

Then again if she’s was in a relationship then could have have Ives in with him so assume got preg early on and dad didn’t want to know

so credit to mum for keeping baby

Tho nice children and respectful to parents

And lovely gift with carpets

brizzledrizzle · 30/12/2018 14:02

I'd liked both the families. I really felt for the one without the carpets, that little baby sitting on the floor and stroking the carpet, what a little love.

Ilovetolurk · 31/12/2018 17:56

The cutest baby ever and didn’t cry once on camera

Impossible with my two

Very jealous of the Farnham mansion

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/09/2019 22:41

Bumping to show on my ‘on list’
