Love these kind of programmes

Over the course of 6 episodes the Ellis family experience first hand what life was like for working families over the past 100 yrs

Beginning 1918

Southerner here, but northern parents. We did have Heinz spaghetti and baked beans sometimes, but a Vesta curry was a rare "treat". Used to have Angel Delight sometimes too. Convenience food kicked in more in the 80s with the arrival of the microwave.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2018 07:43

Love angel delight

Not sure of those spaghetti and meat pasties then deep fried

I miss theRobshaws - one of the funniest things I have seen was Rochelle robshaw massacre a tin of food with a tin opener !

I miss theRobshaws - one of the funniest things I have seen was Rochelle robshaw massacre a tin of food with a tin opener !

I still laugh about that as well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/03/2018 14:12

In her defence the hook ones look bloody hard to dig in and out of tin

Fionne · 05/03/2018 15:43

Those tin openers were lethal. My mum used to wrap a tea towel round her hand before she got on with it. She's also tell us to stand back. Grin

Anyone watch tonight? I’m at work so will watch tomorrow

Akire · 06/03/2018 22:12

I enjoyed I was kid in 80s so so many blast from the past.

Akire · 06/03/2018 22:14

I do wonder where get food from. I mean easy enough photo shop up some old labels for say beans. But some things didn’t seem to be packaging they sell today. It must cost fortune to buy all one off.

PhelanThePain · 06/03/2018 22:39

Loved the singing in the car! Grin they are a fun family.

marchonwards · 06/03/2018 22:47

Going to watch tomorrow with DS. He loves it. Especially as it has 'ancient stuff you grew up with Mum' in the 70s Hmm

SimonBridges · 06/03/2018 22:51

They are such a lovely family.
I love that this time the mum is a good cook and not phased by anything she’s asked to do.

It was great that this was different to the southern one and they showed being poor rather than spending the 80s having Walkmans and computers.

Akire · 06/03/2018 22:54

The car was lovely, no faking all enjoying themselves. So happy.

PhelanThePain · 06/03/2018 23:24

I was disappointed they didn’t redecorate the house for the 90’s. I remember a lot of terracotta and burnt orange. And lots of that rag paint effect. Oh and those textured ceilings! I forget the name. Artex?

Also I thought they might have restored the house to full size or made a little conservatory that everyone had in the 90’s Grin

Akire · 06/03/2018 23:28

Oh yes and stensils! We never had lock on phone but we were hardly allowed to use it. Certainly wouldn’t dare without permission. I wonder if it was very expensive? It was treated like was a tenner a minute!

Fancy bumping into you phealonthepain on another tv thread Grin

PhelanThePain · 06/03/2018 23:38

Grin we clearly need hobbies!

We didn’t have a lock either. I remember phoning my pen pal in Dublin and my mum would come out to the Hall and tap her watch. There was a phone company that came in the late 90’s that allowed you the first ten minutes free to other landlines. Best friend and I would set a timer for 9 minutes and then hang up and ring back. We spent hours doing this. Sometimes we forgot to hang up and the phone bill was huge. Blush

I remember stencils too! I had a border round my room (purple on top, green on bottom- I blame changing rooms!) and the pattern was silver swirls like a stencil.

marchonwards · 07/03/2018 09:13

Oh god stencilling and rag rolling!

maddiemookins16mum · 07/03/2018 09:56

Who knew that such a thing as a chip naan even existed!

Loved this family, table manners aside, they were great fun and the dad was a real hoot in the car singing kids in America.

BertieBotts · 08/03/2018 21:25

That teabag caddy! We used to have that when I was little :)

VQ1970 · 08/03/2018 21:34

They seemed like a nice family (apart from the table manners as someone else mentioned!) The oldest daughter seemed really astute to what was going on and how it affected society.

I thought it was really sweet that the son mentioned how much he had enjoyed spending time with his dad and wanted to do more of that going forward.

I’d never heard of a chip naan but I think this is something I need in my life!

Graphista · 08/03/2018 22:20

Watching on catch up, very moving watching the ex miner. Not impressed with the description of the battle at Orgreave.

No lock on our phone at home but God help you if you DARED try to make a call before 6pm Grin

But there was at some friends houses, one (large) family had a pay phone! Actually very sensible as of course if we went round theirs for tea we'd phone our mum/dad to come fetch us later.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/03/2018 16:22

Our phone was in the hall and R.E.M. Sitting on the stairs talking - no

It was good costing cuting system make you sit in freezing cold hall on the floor or balancing on the stairs!

Graphista · 09/03/2018 16:46

Akire true - you couldn't even sit on the stairs in one of our houses (army family) but then mum got one of these
