Remember Anna Maxwell-Martin playing the heroine who's trying to negotiate her way through motherhood, school gate cliques etc? Diane Morgan playing her plucky new friend, and SAHD Paul Ready? Written by Graham and Helen Linehan, Sharon Horgan and Holly Walsh?

The pilot is being shown again on BBC2 on Monday at 10:00pm with the series to start next week, according to Radio Times.

Preferred the pilot!

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 07/11/2017 22:32

I hate it. Is that supposed to be representative of the ‘hurrah for gin’ mum? The main character is entitled and every bit as vile as Amanda.

MorrisZapp · 07/11/2017 22:33

Some brilliant moments and the actors are fantastic (the sweary redhead is my fave) but it didn't half drag in parts.

I liked the bit where the dad said blame the football schedule not me, my DP says that :)

Great to see AMM in a lighthearted role. Even if her home could only be owned by a millionaire.

Trampire · 07/11/2017 22:40

I liked it. Me and dh laughed a lot.

Dh said "Yes! Those fucking balloons are a nightmare to blow up!". Considering we both leap on YouTube to educate ourselves often how to do stuff it amused us.

I feel AMM's character needs to calm down a bit and just be honest more often - but where's the sitcom in that?

Also, I have indeed had an older male colleague tell me "hey, we all have kids. I understand exactly what it's like" when he has a wife who does pretty much everything.

leccybill · 07/11/2017 22:47

"Just buy 4 Caterpillar cakes. Make a human centipede" Grin
Loved racist Animal Man, and Ann at the window.

I laughed a lot. Sure I've seen Amanda's green dress on S&B on here.

SunnySomer · 07/11/2017 22:47

Ha! I have a husband who does that. He laughed while we watched it, but I don’t realised quite how close to the bone it is. “You’ll make it work”.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 07/11/2017 23:01

brilliant - really enjoyed it

southeastdweller · 07/11/2017 23:02

Funniest moment in the episode and the funniest moment I've seen in a sitcom for ages:

Table hogger on his laptop at the cafe when asked by Kevin to move to a smaller table: : "It's just that this table's right next to the socket".

Liz: "What, a plug, there's a plug down there? I should have brought my ironing, really make the most of that fucking plug. C'mon, mate move it!" Grin

EnidNextDoor · 07/11/2017 23:13

The whole series is up on iPlayer now.

Atalune · 07/11/2017 23:18

I really think this has legs and I can’t wait to see it develop.
Julia’s tension/stress is incredible.

BlessedBeTheFruit · 07/11/2017 23:22

I was a bit disappointed tbh. I loved the pilot, but I didn't find the first episode funny. I'll persevere though.

EugenieG · 07/11/2017 23:27

I feel like I'm missing something about this show - if anyone posted here about a husband / partner as crap as AMM's, we'd be shouting LTB as a chorus. So why is it considered funny on TV?

AMM's character is horribly entitled to think she can/should call on her mother like that.

I kept thinking she's just chronically disorganised... Hmm

Picklesandpies · 07/11/2017 23:30

First bit where she asks whether the school even tried to call her husband before her... This goes genuinely piss me off. I have given the school my husband’s email address twice and he still doesn’t receive emails.

Rollergirl11 · 07/11/2017 23:38

I think I must be missing something. Why would she lie about her daughter being ill? It’s not her fault! Why did she lie about it?

Xmasbaby11 · 07/11/2017 23:51

I enjoyed it. Implausible of course but funny characters.

Loved the plug line in the cafe, and animal

Xmasbaby11 · 07/11/2017 23:52

Sorry, animal man!

I think she lied because she wanted the party to go ahead to get all the party invites in return. Loved it when they all poured in and she was shrieking DROP AND RUN!

EnidNextDoor · 08/11/2017 01:49

Did you notice when Ivy appears at the window then the camera pans back out, a rather large splatter of vomit hits the window.

Dobopdidoo1 · 08/11/2017 02:01

All the characters are based on MNers!

Red haired plucky working class lass?

Frazzled middle classed Mum of 1 with ineffective DH?

Competitive lemon drizzle queen bee Mum ?

I LOVED it!

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 08/11/2017 07:16

The vomit on the window was very funny. The way the grandmother is portrayed as selfish for having her own life really isn’t and Julia’s behaviour towards her is abusive. That’s not comic.

Maudlinmaud · 08/11/2017 07:29

I watched it all into the early hours, now I'm exhausted. Was worth it though, I found it very very funny.

Reppin · 08/11/2017 07:32

I agree that the writers probably read mumsnet petal. I thought it was too cliched and dare I say pretty boring. Which is a shame because I love both of the main actors. I will give it a go though..

onlyconnect · 08/11/2017 07:35

jenniferyellowhat1980 agree totally with your first post.* Haven’t seen another episode so don’t know about that.* Very cliched with main character not likeable at all

ShatnersBassoon · 08/11/2017 07:40

I thought it was funny enough to watch the next episode. I think people are missing the point of sitcom if they're picking out cliché and entitled behaviour as a criticism Grin

Picklesandpies · 08/11/2017 07:45

Are we really going to talk about the abuse towards her mother? This is not RL. I thought it was good but not as good as the pilot. We all know a Julia.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2017 07:51

I enjoyed it, thought it was very funny and the three lead actresses excellent.

Funnily enough, I used to live near a cafe not unlike the one featured in it - full of well-to-do mums and expensive buggies, and I used to see AMM in there quite often!
