Yes he is brilliant in it. But I think he's an amazing actor anyway.

somerandomfucker · 28/06/2017 15:56

I was never that fussed either and apart from Sharpe which I haven't seen, I can't remember any of his other stuff. This series has been brilliant, I'm absolutely hooked and his performance is mesmerising every week

I think he's excellent in this. And a real change from his usual roles, it will do him lots of good, I should think.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/06/2017 16:00

He's really brilliant in it. I've never really liked him in anything but I've teared up a dozen times watching this.

I honestly think it's a truly authentic performance. I just really believe him in it.

LordTrash · 28/06/2017 16:05

Yes, agreed, he has blown me away in this.

There was one scene - when the mother of the boy who was shot meets up with the person who kicked him out of the psychiatric facility - where you could absolutely read what was going on in his head without him saying a word. It was - (1) expecting her to be angry and preparing to back her up in that (2) surprise when she was forgiving and calm (3) self-questioning about his own Christianity in comparison to hers (4) discomfort and shame.

Staggering stuff, and catapulted him from my 'good actors' to 'great actors' list.

Cary2012 · 28/06/2017 19:08

I've loved him for years, agree that he is exceptional in this.

hickorydickorynurseryrhyme · 28/06/2017 19:13

Love Love Love Sean Bean! Does anyone remember him in the TV adaptation of 'The Fifteen Streets' by Catherine Cookson? Really good actor and he was brilliant in that but was a nasty character.

hickorydickorynurseryrhyme · 28/06/2017 19:15

Loving him in 'Broken' too. Although - doubt there are many priests out there though like that!

Boswellox · 28/06/2017 20:20

Punt for the film "Calvary", I recently watched it on BBC I Player and I recommend it if you liked Sean Bean's performance as a troubled priest.

Bitchinabonnet · 28/06/2017 20:35

The series has been brilliant . This week's episode had me in bits (again !!) . Sean Bean deserves every award going as does the lady who plays Helen (the character whose son was shot by the police) .

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 28/06/2017 21:26

Yup he is great real gritty good drama this week was great touching on real issues/perspectives that exist love that they don't try to go for a predictable happy ending - was sad that mum took her life though would've preferred she did a runner

LouiseBrooks · 28/06/2017 21:48

I've been a fan for years and am loving him in this.

Has anyone else seen his last collaboration with Jimmy McGovern? It was brilliant.

cheesydoesit · 28/06/2017 22:11

Oh I loved Calvary.

pineappleeyes · 28/06/2017 23:43

Yes hickory I remember fifteen streets. I watched him in anna karenina at the weekend, I'd forgotten what a good actor he is.

fishcakeintheshade · 29/06/2017 07:14

Ned Dennehy's performance (as Carl) in yesterday's episode was amazing too. It's a very moving and brilliant series.

buggerthebotox · 29/06/2017 15:36

I'm really enjoying this. It's very like Boys from the Blackstuff shows age.

Wasn't Sean Bean Mellors in an adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Liver a while back?

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2017 15:41

He plays such a good, but lonely, man and it's a very affecting performance. He has to give so much of himself to everyone else and the only person he has for support is the older priest although he clearly has fun with his pals and bothers. I love it when his character lets his hair down a bit.
He picks interesting roles, remember The Accused?

Popchyck · 29/06/2017 15:50

He is just so good in this. So understated and subtle and yet full of force.

I never realised how good an actor he is before this.

PlayingSardines · 29/06/2017 15:56

in an adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Liver

I think I only saw the sequel, Lady Chatterley's Left Kidney. Grin

Can I ask an appallingly superficial question, as someone who hasn't yet seen Broken, despite admiring Jimmy McGovern, purely because it sounds so grim? My question is, is Sean Bean still hot in it? The still photos I saw suggested not, but as someone who has always fancied him since he played Romeo at the RSC in the dark ages, I really want to know.

Even though he looks more like Johnny Logan in this photo...

LOVER fgs. GrinBlush.

buggerthebotox · 29/06/2017 16:06

I never found him hot. A bit craggy for my liking. He's so not hot in this (imho).

I'm finding the bent cop plus Adrian Dunbar stuff a bit Line of Duty.

Popchyck · 29/06/2017 16:16

I think he gets better looking as he gets older personally. I am no spring chicken myself though.

And I don't think this series is grim. Serious yep, but very nuanced, some great characterisation and nice bits of humour.

And yes, I thought "Oh, there's Ted from Line of Duty".

PlayingSardines · 29/06/2017 16:22

That's good to hear, Pop. I do generally like JmCG, but all the newspaper reviewers were suggesting it was bang-your-head-against-the-wall-and-howl misery viewing.

I like SB's cragginess. I spent The Fellowship of the Ring trying to decide whether Boromir or Aragorn won the gorgeous craggy award. Boromor gets killed off far too soon (as tends to be the case with SB characters), but Aragorn, once cleaned up and King, is a bit of a disappointment.
