Are there TV shows that you loved which you've watched years later and didn't like?

My DS1 and his friends are all into Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

I used to like it, found it funny and like Will. But now I just think he's such a horrible character and don't find anything funny.

Some goes for Friends - someone in the house has it on now. Even though I was never mad into it I see it now and can't figure out why I'd even have wanted to watch one episode!

The Two Ronnies is depressingly sexist.

Allo Allo is hugely homophobic and stereotypical.

The Likely Lads makes me cringe.

MrsJayy · 13/06/2017 23:24

Allo allo is meant to be sterotypical i personally dont see the homophobia hough i laugh at it cos it is just silly

The Prisoner. The original series. Thought it was dark and complicated. Watched it years later. Turned out it looked very different watching it as a grown up rather than a stoned studentShockBlushHmm

GraceGrape · 13/06/2017 23:30

Button Moon Grin. It really is just an old button.

Only Fools and Horses, which DH insists on watching endless repeats of.

Blackadder remains completely watchable though.

catsarenice · 14/06/2017 05:59

Saved by the Bell - terrible!

Lessthanaballpark · 14/06/2017 06:03

Gilmore Girls. I loved it at the time but now they just seem self-obsessed and up themselves.

Plus the argumentative relationship with the Grandmother is irritating.

Saucery · 14/06/2017 06:24

The Mary Whitehouse Experience on radio. Not just dated, but shrill, sniggery and unfunny.

HollyJollyDillydolly · 14/06/2017 07:34

Another vote for Friends.
Ross & Rachel's relationship wasn't romantic he was a bit of a nob.

Clawdy · 14/06/2017 07:39

Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? So unfunny when I watched an old repeat.

glitterglitters · 14/06/2017 07:41

There was a special anniversary where they showed lots of old CITV programmes and it was AWFUL. I had all this misty eyed nostalgia for things like Fraggle Rock, Soory, Knightmare, Huxley Pig and it was all trash. Sob

MercuryMadness · 14/06/2017 07:43

Titanic is also terrible.

Th effects are very dated and the storyline is really thin and the individual stories above the tragedy all very hackneyed. Bringing rings true at all.

MercuryMadness · 14/06/2017 07:45

I think ER stands up pretty well. There are some episodes such as the one where Doug rescues the little boy from the storm drain and brings him to the hospital in a news copter which is an absolute corker even today.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 14/06/2017 07:46

Sex and the City and Buffy - I started a re-watch on Syfy for the 20th anniversary, got half way through season 2 and gave up. For me it was that some of the acting seemed worse than it was previously (I'm looking at you David Boringarse). There are odd episodes I still like but not the entire run.
Friends is awful now but I still like Frasier.
Blackadder and Father Ted are still brilliant.

redexpat · 14/06/2017 10:45

I still like SATC but I do find Carrie much more annoying than first time around.

MumBod · 14/06/2017 10:56

Monty Python isn't that funny nowadays.

musicmaiden · 14/06/2017 11:01

My contribution is Little Britain – urgh. Agree most comedy doesn't age well.

Conversely, I watched ER for the first time a couple of years ago and it's obviously old, but I found it very enjoyable . I think Buffy and Angel are still fab too, tbh - not every episode, but that's fair enough for such long series. And The West Wing is still wonderful.

musicmaiden · 14/06/2017 11:02

I think I'll still be laughing at Black Books, Father Ted and the Green Wing into the 2020s, too...

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/06/2017 13:30

The West Wing is still just as enjoyable as it was fresh. In fact the only thing that dates it is the technology in it.

CaptainHammer · 14/06/2017 14:07

Another vote for Friends. Ross is such a dick.

Also On The Buses, classic sexist show of the time I suppose.

I agree Musicmaiden, we regularly re watch those. "I'm a prostitute robot from the future"

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/06/2017 15:01

Me too @captainHammer and @musicmaiden!
Whenever it gets hot I joke about Dave syndrome

Amammi · 14/06/2017 20:41

Some like it Hot and Benny Hill

Time40 · 14/06/2017 20:59

Monty Python isn't that funny nowadays

Python is the funniest thing ever created, on TV or anywhere else ....

WarwickDavisAsPlates · 14/06/2017 21:14

Fawlty Towers. I used to watch it with my grandparents as a child, it came up on Netflix the other day and thought I'd give it a go... couldn't even make it through a full episode it was so terrible!

Still love Buffy and Fresh Prince though, although DH and I did notice that Will was funny the first time around and now he's just really rude and annoying.

I'm desperate to rewatch SBTB so I hope the PP that mentioned it is wrong and it's just as fantastic as I remember.

TizzyDongue · 14/06/2017 21:41

Father Ted does seem to have stood the test of time. Test of time and several rewatches in my case!

Fawlty Towers I agree with: from a time when humour was in mocking stereotypes, mocking patronisingly that is.

Still find Fawlty Towers hilarious, I have to say.
