Pola,

Thread 1: here

Thread 2: here

Preemptive,

Agreed.
And, yes, Maggie's smirking boss was really unlikeable Angry
I too would have told her to screw herself. (Petal).

Interesting that both she and DC Katie, two young women, held attitudes less progressive than the older females.

Couch,

Yes, very true.
Apart from picking up on a couple of BC's very obvious TH references, I'm (embarrassingly) rusty on his subtler themes (been years since I last read him).
I haven't yet seen series 1 and 2, which I'm told are also filled with TH clues.
You've inspired me to re-read some classics. Thanks. Smile

Are there any particular TH themes? I used to read his novels every few years but it's been a while and my memory is hazy.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 19/04/2017 13:47

IAmNot,

Am same as you...very hazy!

I dimly remember an old Eng. Lit. teacher (endlessly) pointing out TH's recurring themes of a single dark and dramatic event impacting upon sleepy, small (rural) community/ nostalgia for past times before changes to way of life were underway/ love turning cruel etc.

All of which apply to Broadchurch (though equally to many dramas, really).

Not yet sure what "subtler themes" as mentioned by others. Hoping becomes clearer on a light re-read, without the need to do full on literary analysis...don't have the energy or inclination for that.
Especially not when Line Of Duty's using up my mental resources Grin

Serious, RL interjection:

Direct quote from a Rape Crisis worker/campaigner:
source: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/18/rape-crisis-broadchurch

"...At least today’s programme-makers consult with specialists, such as Rape Crisis, to ensure their portrayals are realistic.
But here I start to falter.
Because the truth is I know the tidal wave of researchers, writers and producers eager to handle sexual violence responsibly is beginning to place a burden on chronically under-resourced and overstretched yet vital support agencies. And incredibly, the vast majority don’t offer to pay these specialists for their expertise. Some even decline to make a donation towards the time charities spend helping them when explicitly asked - time that inevitably detracts from core work like service delivery..."

Don't know about you all, but I find that end sentence bloody shocking Angry

Broadchurch, you'll be glad to hear, has proved sound all along in its genuine (incl. financial) support of sexual violence charities:
See 5 mins interview with Julie Hesmondhalgh/ Trish Winterman here

TL;DR version:
Some TV dramas refuse to reimburse rape charities for use of their expertise and resources...Broadchurch was honourable and continued to do so, not just for cheap PR Flowers

Oh I can't cope, poor me!! Beth you deal with the same grief as me but you have to cope and I'll feck off without any responsibilities

I agree with this. I'm really angry that Mark was able to swan off to find himself, leaving Beth to deal with all the practical and emotional fallout. He was very self-indulgent IMO.

Something bothered me about the previous rapes: why would Leo have just happened to be hanging about in a field right at the time that the woman was walking home? and why was he there when the other woman's car broke down and able to take advantage of that too?

ThoraGruntwhistle · 19/04/2017 15:05

It thought it was a brilliant show but I can see why they've ended it there, much as I'll miss it. But would Michael have been physically able to rape Trish whilst deeply upset at what he was being made to do, and while drunk, with another person standing over him filming it? Leo was utterly vile, and him being guilty of the other rapes made sense, but would he be able to force someone else to do it?
I felt sorry for Mark but he was a selfish git getting to just say 'no I'm not going to stay around here and see my children, I'm off.' Unless he was going to jump back into the sea and try again. I don't know.

DubiousCredentials · 19/04/2017 15:23

He said he'd always got his "rape kit" with him and the previous two rapes had taken place after parties hadn't they? Or drinks in the pub. So presumably he'd just happened to have been there and follow the women home. Although how he could have known that one woman would take a short cut through and field and the other would have car trouble remains a mystery 🤔

SapphireStrange · 19/04/2017 15:43

Yes, quite!

PolaDeVeboise · 19/04/2017 15:51

Thanks Ladies!

hackmum · 19/04/2017 16:08

Sapphire - yes, that was a puzzle. We were led to believe that the whole car breakdown thing was significant, but it was never explained how Leo was able to find those women.

We can add it to the mystery of the taxi driver's trophy drawer and Rapey McRapeface's mackerel fishing lie as stuff that remains unsolved.

SapphireStrange · 19/04/2017 16:11

God, I'd forgotten about those but they'll irritate me all over again now. Grin

Clawdy · 19/04/2017 18:12

And Trish's husband washing all his clothes in a very guilty way! Too many red herrings really.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 19/04/2017 18:22

Thanks Thalia - your teachers were obviously better than mine - or possibly you were a better listener than me Smile

IAmNotAUserNumber · 19/04/2017 18:22

Didn't Ian get very drunk and ended up asleep in a ditch or something?

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 19/04/2017 18:27

How do I watch series 1 and 2?! It is not on iPlayer or net flicks! 😩😩😩

DubiousCredentials · 19/04/2017 18:48

It's on Now TV.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 19/04/2017 21:02

Anyone want to join me in petitioning actress Carolyn Pickles to set up a RL 'Maggie "Vlogger" Radcliffe' YouTube account?

Monthly updates from Broadchurch...occasional guest spots from other characters...continued interaction with its fanbase: am sure we could supply her with plenty of material Wink

I jest, sort of, but there's so much potential there

After reflecting on the final episode, over the last couple of days, I think it was good, but not great.

The good stuff: Well, the two leading characters were spellbinding; from Hardy hardly able to subdue his excitement, "The screws are tightening Millarrrrgh! You can hear them squeak!" to Ellie wistfully, sat by the sea in her trusted orange anorak suggesting a drink: "We could go to the pub, we've never done that..." and Alec's surely "Nahh" in response. So they both go back to their respective kids - great. And the ending, Ellie and Beth, the survivors, strong women, together breaking bread and with family, great.

The not so good bits: IMHO previous series have been marred by a bit of cheesy sentimentality, I mean the whole village turning up on the cliff with tea lights, candles...Thankfully, we didn't get that, well not quite. The vicar announced that he expected 'about eight' villagers, and guess what they all rocked up. Would Ed really go to church just after being released? Would Cath, who had just previously tried to frame her husband for rape, be stood next to him in the congregation? It was too cheesy, too sentimental.

Trish, the victim was a flawed character, a real person. I rooted for Trish, warts and all, from the start. If only she had told the ex what to do with his Chinese takeaway. Instead we were left thinking that these two might reconcile, which after the way he had stalked Trish, stealing her lap top, installing spyware, left an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

And I'm sorry to say this, but Mark 'woe is me' Latimer's scenes dragged. I just wanted to get back to the station, to the action, and was at best indifferent to him pouring his heart out to the long suffering Beth.

So, we had a lot of loose ends, an attractive instigator and previous rapist, who groomed a weak lad. Trish's pleading question, "Why me?" from episode one was answered in the final episode: because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time . It wasn't a satisfying ending, it jarred, the way Michael suddenly took centre stage, after weeks of slowly teasing us with main cast suspects.

But Broadchurch at it's worse, beats other dramas at their best. Some of it was great. I will miss it.

DispatchReady · 19/04/2017 21:59

Carey you've summed up my thoughts exactly on the good and the bad!

busyboysmum · 19/04/2017 22:32

I thought it was very very unlikely the young boy would have bern able to perform under such circumstances and actually be able to rape Trish. Much more realistic if Leo had done the rape again and forced him to film it maybe. That jarred for me.

Also the poor me from the dad Mark. Wasn't he shagging some woman whilst his son was missing? So he kind of brought the break up of the marriage with Beth on himself really..... really was uninterested in him. What a crap pathetic waste of space he was.

SapphireStrange · 20/04/2017 10:54

Yes, the hotel owner. I'm pretty furious with what they let Mark get away with.

NotJanine · 20/04/2017 11:37

I'm rewatching the 1st series and Mark is really creepy in it, with his lying and smirking. Obviously they wanted viewers to think he was a possible suspect, so had to make him like that.

I'd forgotten how much Ellie hated Hardy.
