OP posts:
LieselVentouse · 07/03/2007 09:47

I knew it was on but couldnt watch it as a similar thing happened to me 20 years ago and I ended up veggie. I just dont want to go veggie just now as Im PG and iron is low.

geekgrrl · 07/03/2007 09:50

I didn't watch it but we rear, kill and eat our own chickens so I get the idea...
would happily go veggie and usually eat veggie when on my own or eating out, but can't do veggie for everyone as the rest of the family love to eat meat.

expatinscotland · 07/03/2007 09:53

i missed it!

it was cow last night.

did the cow suffer?

i hope not.

i don't eat much red meat, but when we do, we buy it from an organic farmer in the Borders who sells at our farmer's market.

ditto all our pork and chickens.

interestingly enough, a family in the UK has also opened the first organic halal farm in Britain to serve the Islamic community, and orders are already pouring in - hopefully we will be able to expand soon.

DimpledThighs · 07/03/2007 09:53

I was a vegetarian from about 12yrs old until I was pregnant. Now we eat organic happy meat and I thought that was okay - I was fine with it.

I watched this programme and I thought - yes it may have a nice life and it was a calm slaughterhouse BUT at the point of death the cow was TERRIFIED and the cow going from a living beast with a light in it's eyes to a dead corpse was too much.

I have cooked my last meat meal last night that I will eat. I will continue to buy nad cook for the rest of the family as would hate them to miss out but it made me realise that all for the sake of a quick meal that is over in minutes a life has to go.

LieselVentouse · 07/03/2007 10:24

I have always had a problem with the slaughterhouse no matter how free range or kind we try to be there has to be an alternative to the way they are killed. I vow that once Ive had this baby Im not going back as I feel too guilty about this now.

hollyandalice · 07/03/2007 10:25

I didn't watch it as I am already a veggie and am quite aware of what goes on in slaughterhouses. I was going to make my dp watch it though as he is a complete carnivore! I think all meat eaters should watch things like this so they are aware of exactly what they are eating. Most people just don't even think about it.

NotanOtter · 07/03/2007 10:26

fantastic dimpled

missed it but have been vegetarian 25 years now so nothing would change

poor moo cows - they are so lovely

expatinscotland · 07/03/2007 10:29

Will this be repeated?

hollyandalice · 07/03/2007 10:32

There is a pig one on tonight, 10.30 bbc 3. Def going to make dp watch it. Might make him think twice about his sausage sandwiches!

expatinscotland · 07/03/2007 10:36

i do find cows very peaceful animals.

spykid · 07/03/2007 10:47

well I watched the sheep last night expecting to be traumatised.

Instead I was fascinated and was impressed with how calm and quick the slaughter p[rocess was.

KathyMCMLXXII · 07/03/2007 10:53

Missed this; really want to see it.

spykid · 07/03/2007 10:53

its pigs tonight....

expatinscotland · 07/03/2007 10:54

I don't eat sheep or lamb - don't like the taste.

But I do like wool.

DimpledThighs · 07/03/2007 10:59

I missed the sheep one - TBH spykid I watched the cow one thinking it would have that effect on me - I would be reasured by the process, but I wasn't, the opposite, but the sheep one might have been different.

I don't know if I could bear the pig one. We kept pigs when I was little as my dad was into the whole small holder thing but he could not part with them as theya re so intelligent and knowing and loving. I think I will make myself watch it but I know I would not even be able to buy pig after seeing it.

DimpledThighs · 07/03/2007 11:00

what would you think about me recording it to show DS who is 7?

He is very interested and he watched the Hugh FernallyWhittingstall chicken one.

wotzsaname · 07/03/2007 11:02

DimpledThighs would you take DS to a slughterhouse?

The viewing was very detailed and graphic.

NotanOtter · 07/03/2007 11:02

i think its a good idea but i am biased

hollyandalice · 07/03/2007 11:03

dimpledthighs I watched a video of a cow being slaughtered when I was 8 and I haven't eaten a morsel of meat since! It's prob a good idea to show him as at this age I was very interested in animals and where my food came from, but be prepared for him not wanting to eat it again!

expatinscotland · 07/03/2007 11:03

Two friends of mine worked in meat-packing plants as teens, because that's the only work they could get in their small town.

They've been vegetarians for 30 years!

DimpledThighs · 07/03/2007 11:04

I would take him to a slaughter house if he asked. I think that it is right that he is interested in where his food comes from and I will watch the programme first.

It is intersting because the chicken one did not stop him eating chicken but he was more informed and knows about battery farming etc.

I don't want to tramatise him but I don't want to deny the fact that to eat meat an animal dies.

spykid · 07/03/2007 11:04

not sure about ds

Wouldnt show my ds who is 8.....

I think the pig may be more unsettling as they are more intelligent animals.

I thought the part where they explained the different cuts of meat was interesting.

I guess if we want good quality meat, we need to be aware of where it comes from!

Blu · 07/03/2007 11:05

I watched the sheep one and felt entirely matter of fact about it. The animals were dealt with humanely (but of course they would be, the staff were all on TV!) ...I suppose the procedure once the animal was dead was not for the squeamish, but that is not an ethical or maoral issue, is it?

I wouldn't have eaten the testicles or lung, as that is beyond my sqeamish thershold (irrational, I know) but otherwise I thought it was fine. I would have let Ds watch it, too.

Is there always a vet present at all slaughterhouses?

wotzsaname · 07/03/2007 11:06

I think if you want your youn children to be veggie there are better ways to do this than to let allow them to watch an animal being slaughtered.

Nbg · 07/03/2007 11:07

Totally borktastic last night.

Am seriously considering our eating habits now.
