Oh I love it. Giggle the whole way through, I think it's brilliant. Coverting her wardrobe too, the dress in this week's episode was gorgeous. Though I get not to everyone's taste.

mizu · 11/03/2017 09:30

Love it too, am a teacher so love all the little jokes about pay ( I'm in FE so properly crap pay Grin ) and adore her wardrobe too.

Very, very funny.

salsmum · 14/03/2017 01:56

I love this programme and must admit I do find it very funny......but really wish it was on for an hour it's too short for me.

TheLegendOfBeans · 16/03/2017 05:51

Finding this series paling in comparison to S1 and S2. Both parties are coming across as dicks and the old guy saying "I'm going to kick a cupcake up you pussy" wasn't even funny. It smacked of something they'd shoehorned in at the writers' meeting so they could all go home that evening.

It's a pity, I LOVE Sharon Horgan but her gift is in the relatability of her writing. As a PP said, that's really gone now.

EachandEveryone · 22/03/2017 03:49

Thanks for agreeing with me I thought I was the only one. It's just so smutty it makes me cringe. No one talks like that.

TheLegendOfBeans · 22/03/2017 08:50

Did you watch last nights? What's that all about re: Rob and the boozing? It's a bit 0-60?!

Iamtheresurrection · 22/03/2017 09:15

The first time you seen him drinking he covered himself in cheese and onion crisps and Sharon questioned the smell. She's mentioned the smell again plus he's been putting on weight so I guess the implication is be back on it.

EachandEveryone · 22/03/2017 09:31

No I stopped watching two episodes ago I find her character unlikeable

cuirderussie · 22/03/2017 13:59

Rob has got to stop talking about Sharon's "pussy" ConfusedSad

EachandEveryone · 22/03/2017 18:00

Didnt you know thats how middle aged professional hipsters talk? Hmm actually, no one i know talks lije that who says pussy?

cuirderussie · 22/03/2017 21:15

Well maybe Americans. It's just a word that makes me go eeeeeerrrrrrrggggghhhhhh! Also Sharon is from the same Irish town as me, where a pussy is what catches mice out the back garden Wink

TheLegendOfBeans · 22/03/2017 21:39

I think it's used frequently to maybe ram home the point "HE'S AMERICAN!"

Iamtheressurrection that's a very salient point you make. How are they gonna wrap something like that up in two episodes?

Unless it's supposed to provide a platform for S4.....

EachandEveryone · 22/03/2017 22:10

Well they say it a lot in The Sopranos is it used in the same context or is he talking about her fanjo? If so then that is cringy. I never saw it.

SpringerS · 24/03/2017 09:01

What's that all about re: Rob and the boozing? It's a bit 0-60?!

Rob's backstory has always been that he's a recovering alcoholic with a horrible history with alcohol and he's been relapsing heavily since mid-late season 2. At the start of the season he got turned down for a job that seemed perfect for him because the interviewer said he stank of alcohol (which also carries the implication that the reason he's been fucking up in the other interviews was that he's been a bit drunk bit the interviewers were being less direct). And since the first time with the crisps, there have been a few other times when Sharon has remarked on him stinking of cheese and onion. The thing with the hotdogs, ham and hummus could also have been an example of something that seems like a tasty idea when you're a bit drunk.

Rob has been in a very bad way for close to half of the show. Tbh, I've been expecting him to get a call to say his mother died (due to Carrie Fisher's death) and for that to be the catalyst that worsens his problem to the point where it would become obvious to Sharon.

TheLegendOfBeans · 24/03/2017 09:09

Springer, you e explained it really articulately. I need to rewatch episodes 1,2 and 3 now I think but you're right; the death of Carrie Fisher IRL could be incorporated into the writing as a way for Rob to fall further down the spiral.

Now I understand a bit more I feel I can enjoy (is that the right word?) the rest of the series better.

SpringerS · 24/03/2017 11:54

My ex husband is an alcoholic so all of the little hints are glaring to me. I especially like the bits that aren't obvious right away, like him doing awful interviews and then finally seeing one where he is called out on being drunk, and the realisation that he was probably drunk for all of them. Because that's what living with a 'functioning' alcoholic is like. They are always having these bad days at work, losing contracts for what seem like very unfair reasons, doing odd out of character things that are annoying but still more funny than warning signal.

And it all builds up slowly with the badness/oddness increasing bit by bit as their 'functioning' devolves and eventually you are living in a really hellish situation with no idea how you got there. It isn't until you get out of it completely that you recognise that all of those bad days and odd quirks were all a result of the alcoholism. You look back and bit by bit, now that you have all the information, you see it in a different light. So this is being very cleverly done.

And the way that Rob instantly knew to cover up his booze stink with crisps shows just how bad his problem was in the past and how deceitful he learned how to be. An 'amateur' at that kind of deceit would go for mints and deodorant to hide the smell, though both of those actually highlight the alcohol smell if anything. To have learned and accepted (because alcoholics are masters at denial and gaslighting) that they don't work and learned to use strong, horrible smells to disguise the alcohol means he spent a long time fooling and trying to fool someone(s) in the past. And to make the conscious choice to hide his drinking from Sharon in this manner mean that his drinking is no mistake or blip and is actually a sign that his drinking is already the most important thing in his life again.

NecklessMumster · 31/03/2017 08:41

I think the alcoholic bit has been too subtle for a half hour sitcom, I found it a bit confusing, it could have been done more easily. And I keep thinking about how the actor is a recovering alcoholic in real life which is a bit depressing. I've seen this irl with my db so know some of the signs too.

MrsJamin · 01/04/2017 16:33

To be honest I think honest Catastrophe has lost a bit of its charm, they aren't being very nice to anyone, and they used to be so likeable.

EachandEveryone · 02/04/2017 01:12

Yeah ive been saying that since last season. I havent watched the last three episodes, Sharron has never been a nice person in it.

I see theyve started filming season 2 of Divorce, i prefer that.

TheLegendOfBeans · 02/04/2017 06:04

Season 4 confirmed, says it in this article.

www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/catastrophe-season-3-carrie-fisher-last-tv-role-sharon-horgan-rob-delaney-channel-4-star-wars-8-a7568361.html

That'll explain a lot re my bewilderment on
A) how are they going to "wrap" this seasons stories in one, two episodes?
B) where are the scenes with Carrie Fisher this series?
C) the plodding feel to the pace of the plot

I don't hold out much hope for a magical return to form for S4.

MrsJamin · 02/04/2017 07:20

Yeah I thought carrie fisher was in this series? It's a shame. Girls on sky Atlantic has just got better and better over the seasons, in comparison.

tribpot · 02/04/2017 10:19

I've been waiting for Carrie Fisher as well - as per Legend's article all her scenes are in Episode 6 (presumably she visits to deal with Rob's addiction crisis).

Not been a very enjoyable series.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/04/2017 10:28

I thought the closing scene in the most recent episode was so poignant, when she's holding Frankie and crying, and Rob hugs her.
Then they cut to her back and Frankie's little hand is patting her back "there there"

Iamtheresurrection · 03/04/2017 14:15

Frankie is the same age as my son but strangely silent! If we were having conversations like the ones he's in the middle of my so would be quoting it back at us and probably chipping in!!
