The maths does assume a perfect model which is not realistic.

Wars, plagues, diseases etc will all reduce the size of a family tree. Also the most important part is that (distant) relatives will eventually have children with other which joins branches together drastically reducing the numbers.

The maths does demonstrate though how pointless it is to go back that far.

As I said assuming each couple had 2 children, over 22 generations 1 in 15 is related to Ed III. In reality there were more children but a hell of a lot of intermarriage. My software freaks out at DH'S ancestors. It starts complaining about being in loops and the dc appear many times (10+) because of intermarriage. The numbers assume everyone married out which just wasn't the case in nobility (or indeed commoners)

GiddyOnZackHunt · 27/11/2016 01:36

Example: We have 7 siblings, 5 of whom married 5 siblings of another slightly related family. Fucks up charting software no end :)

Danny Dyer, the prick's prick.

Thank you Kevin Bridges

I would have thought that assuming each couple had two kids was pretty conservative.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 27/11/2016 01:50

Bunty Yes but as my previous answer, intermarriage helped counteract that. The multiple gentry married each othér rather than commoners, reducing the total of descendent. My 2 dc make up > 20 of the nominal descendants due to intermarriage.

Don't forget to account for high rate of infant deaths, maternal deaths, disease, wars etc making life expectancy very short.

Very entertaining episode to kick off the new series. I don't think DD is exaggerating his 'cockney-ness' - it's just how people talk where he was brought up and his social circle has always been the same people from his background (I've read both of his books).

HappydaysArehere · 27/11/2016 15:24

Really enjoyed this programme. Interesting and entertaining. Loved his wife's joyful "I'm a princess" and Danny seeing off the tv crew with the "get off you underlings". Such a change to have something to laugh at.

iklboo · 27/11/2016 15:29

I reckon he sounds like James Blunt off camera. And vice versa Grin

iklboo · 27/11/2016 15:32

I found out the other day that my old English teacher went on to be his drama teacher.

Dizzybintess · 06/12/2016 23:36

This programme was comedy genius! Even my DH watched it!!!
Loved the cake o bake o!

MsGameandWatch · 08/12/2016 14:12

I've just watched this. I thought he was great, took it seriously and seemed really moved when he found out about the criminal conviction of his great, great, grandmother.

Few horrible snobs on this thread though.

PearlsBeforeWine · 21/11/2019 21:39

I am thoroughly enjoying this! Anybody else watching on repeat?

Norugratsatall · 21/11/2019 22:12

Yes! Didn't see it first time around. Found it intensely fascinating even if I think DD is a bit of a twat!

PearlsBeforeWine · 22/11/2019 10:16

He's such a geezer... Makes me miss London in an odd way. For those doubting.... London is full of Danny dyers..

I found it quite touching.
